- How to use a Jet Diver, and how to use a Dipsy Diver trolling for Kokanee without downriggers. I'll show you how to rig a Dipsy Diver and how to rig a Jet Diver for trolling, as well as what you need to get started fishing for Kokanee. Fishing for Kokanee Salmon and trout without downriggers can be done, and I'll show you how.

Great info . They make jet divers that have the tension trip like the dipsey. Dipseys can also take you side direction for skittish kokanee though also .

Nicely done Ty, now I can tell my wife I learned something today starring at this screen! I spent many days as a kid on my dad's boat fishing kings and coho on Lake Michigan. We used dipsy divers some but mostly used down riggers to run the gear to depth. Never used a Jet Diver though, very interesting and great tutorial.

THE MOUNTAINLIFE I wish I had a video camera back in the day on that boat! We've been out of the coho fishing for a while. Our last outing was on a paid charter. Those are the easiest way to have a good time, your hands don't even get dirty. I wish I fished as much now as then, maybe that will change! THE MOUNTAINLIFE Typically they are around $600 total for 4-6 guys, ~$100 each. That's a 1/2 day outing which is all you need. We easily filled our limit the last 2 trips I was on. In fact 6 years ago we were done in 3 hours, 20 fish in the boat. A couple years ago it took the whole trip to fill the limit, the video on my channel. Mostly small coho, it was early in the season, water was still cold. The kings come out in the warmer months.

Great video! my question is if I am fishing from a kayak what one of these would have the least resistance?
If there is to much resistance its hard for me to paddle its two strokes for every one on the side with the resistance.
The smaller sizes of either device would provide less resistance. Just as a side note, the jet divers have an air filled compartment, so, if you are going too slow, you may not dive to the same depth as a jet diver. If you stop moving altogether, the jet diver will come to the surface. It may not be an issue, but just something to think about. Jet divers were designed for back-trolling in rivers, but I have also found them to work for this application. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

I just used a dipsy diver for the first time and could not get them to trip even with taking all tension off the screw. It may be because they are new or from my fast action rod not giving enough tension when trying to release it.
Hi Gary, I think you're right, your fast action rod may not be providing enough backbone to trip the diver. Also, if you are using monofilament fishing line this has the tendency to stretch, even more so when you have a lot of line out. This can also be a contributing factor which is why some people prefer to troll with a braided line. Hope that helps, good luck!

I plan to fish for kokanee at Strawberry for my 1st time there and was wandering what marina would be good to start from and North or South from there? Thanks in advance. You vids have help me catch Kokanee!!
The best time to hit Strawberry for Kokanee is the month of June and early July. Hopefully you can still get into a few fish before they start turning color. You will want to search for the deeper parts of the lake. Stay out of the many small bays around Strawberry's shores and stick to the wide open deeper parts of the lake. Hope that helps, good luck!
Great video!! That was super helpful. This may be a dumb question but are the dials on the bottoms of the dipsy divers indicate left and right when you're facing the bow or the stern? Thanks!
Thanks Salif, not a dumb question. In fact, I can't remember for certain. What I would do is after you get it rigged up, dial it to one side or the other, then let it out directly behind the boat and see which way it wants to go. Then you will know for sure. Sorry man, can't remember!
When setting dipseyline, remember that the weight should be facing the boat side,tipping down. L&R is from bow
Once you get out there with the set up, what's the speed you're usually going? I'm guessing that it depends on how deep you want it to go? I'm like +MrRojoneck I'd like to try it in a kayak.
+Wing Butler Usually somewhere between 1.3 - 2 mph. The Jet divers are air filled, so if you're not going fast enough, it may not dive as much. However, there are benefits to this, especially if you are fishing in a kayak. If you stop moving for whatever reason, rather than your line sinking to the bottom and getting snagged, as it would with a dipsy, your jet diver will actually rise to the surface. This may come in handy if trying to fish two rods out of a kayak. Just a thought. Thanks for watching Wing.

Mike, sorry about the delay in my reply. Lets answer some of these questions.
-I use 12 lb test from rod to my dipsy (this is a bit overkill, but I don't want to lose any gear it's pricey). Then I run 8lb from dipsy to lure, or from dodger to lure.
-I use about a 7-8ft rod.
-I have never tried this on a kayak, but as long as you can create enough forward momentum, the diver should have some resistance against the water and dive. Let me know when you try it out though. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Loved your video! I have a few questions. Because money was a little tight, me and my family rented a pontoon boat for the morning in mid July. I believe there won't be down riggers on the boat. With it being mid July, should we even try for kokes, and if yes, how deep would you recommend?
I have found that Kokanee fishing is really good through June and into the first week or two in July. You will find that fish start to turn a shade of pink as July goes on...and when they start to turn red for the spawn the meat/eating quality goes down. They could be anywhere from about 25-50 ft. I found less resistance when using 2-3 ounce inline sinkers. I used to use jet divers, pink ladies etc....3 ounce inline, 10 pulls behind the boat equal 100 feet out with 8 pound mono runs my dodgers and wedding ring about 35 feet deep. Where I catch most of my kokes at.

Have you ever tried snap weights and planer boards? Gets the hardware off to just fight the fish.
What is a dodger? Do I need to attach this to the line instead of just the lure after the diver?
A dodger is an attractor, like a flasher. I run a dipsey with braid mainline, then mono or fluorocarbon leader to lure, ( spoon,plug, rotater and fly.)

Thanks Richard. I have fished Otter creek, that can be a fun lake. Surprisingly though, I haven't made it to Fish Lake yet. I'm not sure I understand your question about the Dipsy Divers though...are you asking what type and lbs of fish I use it on? Or something else?

Ok, I got you now. Depends on what type of fish. If you're chasing Lake Trout, the braid will be nice because it doesn't have the stretch like monofilament does. This will allow for a better hook set. You can get a 30lb braid that is the same diameter as roughly 8lb monofilament. I know 30lb sounds overkill, but if it's the same diameter as 8lb mono, why not. It will still allow plenty of line to be spooled on the reel at this diameter. I typically use spyder wire or power pro and both have worked just fine. I would just go with whichever one is cheaper as I haven't seen a difference between the two.
Now, there are times when a monofilament comes in handy. For instance, if I'm trolling for Kokanee I actually prefer to have a little bit of line stretch because Kokanee have soft mouths and often the hook tears through their mouth leading to lost fish. We combat this by using really limber rods and a rubber snubber. So another added tool is the stretch that monofilament allows in order to get more kokanee in the boat. I like 10-12 lb monofilament for this because things like Jet divers and Dipsy divers are expensive and I don't want to lose them. And then from my Jet diver to my dodger and lure, I'm using 8lb monofilament with the idea that if a fish breaks my line, he's only going to get my lure and not all of my gear (dipsy or jet diver too). Long answer to a short question, does that help?

Does the diver still release and work properly with the snubber on? I watched a video with another guy saying to use braid because it keeps the line tight with minimal give, which he claimed you want when using a diver so that is works properly when the fish strikes. Thoughts?
You bring up a good point brother. I could definitely see the braid being beneficial in that instance. What I have done is fish a monofilament with no snubber, seems to give just a bit of stretch but I can still trip the diver. I also use a limber rod too (lamiglass tournament kokanee). This rod is limber enough to provide a gentle play on the fish but has enough backbone to trip a diver too. I wouldn’t use my Okuma SST kokanee rod with a diver because it’s too light. Just my two cents….
Yes using braid is preferred. It has minimal stretch compared to monofilament,(cuts the water better too!) therefore allows you to use a lighter action rod while still being able to trip the divers. Braid = snubber, mono= no snubber. Monofilament has plenty of stretch to accommodate a hard hitting fish. This is in my experience I can't speak for everone.
what colors would you recommend for squid and spin n go's for strawberry reservoir in utah. Is there a preference regarding the dodgers. Color combination or size?
Thanks for the question Justin. The color pink and salmon go together like PB & J. As a rule of thumb, try something pink, chartruse, or bright organge. I would also have a pearl white squid in the box. I usually prefer dodgers somewhere around 4-6 inches. Good luck!

+Jeremiah Oddo Jeremiah, thanks for the question. It has been my experience that you need a boat to have any real success for Kokanee. However, depending on the lake, you may be able to cast into some deeper areas from the shore...

Without a line counter reel how will u know when the river has reached is depth
Line counter reels are a great tool for that exact reason. The poor man’s way is to count how many pulls or arm lengths you let out each time. You really can’t say much about depth measured in feet this way, but you can be consistent.
how do u set the tension
There is a screw that you turn in for more tension, or back out for less tension.
I've never been able to get a jet diver to actually dive. just rolls on surface
5:40 I could not find anywhere else online that explained the use of these extra holes. It's pretty intuitive but still.

Have you tried the deep six divers?
I haven't, but they also look like a good option. As I understand it, they also have the release on the front that can be tripped when you hook into a fish. Probably another good option, but I can't offer any advice as I haven't used them personally. Have you used them before, if so, what are your thoughts on them? Thanks for the question.
THE MOUNTAINLIFE I haven't had a chance to try them yet because my boat project isn't done. I'm just looking into options right now. We picked some up before my dad sold his boat but never got to test them out. Whith the info from this video and the video at Anderson ranch reservoir I'm sure they'll work fine.
