BYD Sealion 6 2024 review: Is the new plug-in hybrid SUV a good Toyota RAV4 Hybrid alternative?
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 มิ.ย. 2024
- The 2024 BYD Sealion 6 is the emerging Chinese brand's first model in Australia that's not a fully electric vehicle. Instead, the new mid-size SUV is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). As such, it finds itself going tyre to tyre with the 'self-charging' Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Nissan X-Trail e-Power, as well as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Needless to say, the Sealion 6 finds itself in the deep end from the get go, with it having to compete for sales with three very well established nameplates. At the same time, the Kia Sportage Hybrid and Hyundai Tucson Hybrid are starting to make their presences felt.
So, the Sealion 6 stands apart by offering buyers the choice between two series-parallel PHEV powertrains, with the naturally aspirated front-wheel drive producing 160kW/300Nm, while the turbocharged all-wheel drive develops a more formidable 238kW/550Nm.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis gets behind the wheel of the new Sealion 6 to find out how well it stacks up.

Don't most manufacturers skip the spare tyre these days?
Have you just woken from a coma? Almost every single new hybrid car right now has no spare tyre, so I don't think that was a fair criticism. Sounds like you're nitpicking just for the sake of nitpicking.
It’s fine, gosh lol
PHEVs yes but not all hybdrids. Rav 4 HEV does have a spare tyre.
Spare tires are not needed. If you got a puncture and if cannot fix it, you need to end up buying two tires anyways.
BYD are going to sell a heap of these. Everyone I know who has a BYD has been really happy with it.
This will meet those people who want an EV, but are nervous about the charging networks and the convenience.
and its not 65K like a lot of its Plug in hybrid rivals (Mitsubishi)
BYD has never been an EV only manufacturer
BYD is actually a well-established brand in China, but Chinese car brands are something new to developed countries, so some people may think this brand is new to the automotive industry.
@@acde9355well you would hope a motoring journalists would at least check their facts before saying it, if they have no idea.
@@ItsJonesy777meat pies brav what else to say
It went full EV 2 years ago, BEVs and PHEVs. Stop spreading lies. It isn't a BEV only manufacturer, but EVs include PHEVs.
@@ItsJonesy777 No, you should check your bloody facts. Both BEVs and PHEVs are EVs.
BYD never had an 'all electric policy' lol
They made PHEVs for years and years in China but they never sold them here in Australia.
This is just the first one imported here.
Sometimes I think I could do a better job than auto journalists without any experience or training.
You are certainly better than this one, it's a new era now.
Don’t understand why the review was expecting sporty steering in midsize SUV????
😂😆
I live in China and have had one of these cars for the past 4 months (BYD Song Plus). I have the single electric motor and 1.5L engine. It is plenty fast enough and VERY economical. I have the top spec model, very pleased with it.
lucky you I'm a Chinese living in Australia, and I want a Song Plus so bad
Toyota will use iBYD Hybrid system in their car as replacement of their existing aged hybrid . They already use byd ev platform
I stopped at 1:05 and went down to the dealer
BYD has been making PHEV's for about a decade but OK.
Well....since 2008 ....so I guess that is about a decades. And yes, I believe they made the first ever PHEV.
1st mass produced PHEV
The only thing I think he can mean is “in Australia” because BYD built Chinese domestic “ice only” cars 2003 - 2022 and PHEVs since 2008 to now. There’s a PHEV Ute coming as well. So in Australia, BYD was pure electric until the arrival of the Sea Lion and Shark.
@@dingbatt BYD has been fully electric in China for 2 years, BEVs and PHEVs.
So much info wrong in this review, not too mention the continued pauses and loss for words. Shocking review.
It's like it was written by a high schooler.
This reviewer always seems like he’s making things up on the spot lol. Either a poor memory or does no research before doing a review. Makes Carsguide look quite untrustworthy.
For us this car is perfect. Live in Sydney with family down the South Coast. Drive around the city on electric during the week. No range anxiety when we go down the South Coast. Charge overnight on standard AC power point. And a lot cheaper than the Mitsubishi. Also there are after market spare tyres for the atto 3 - I'd expect the same for the sealion.
What do you mean by copied its a stretched Seal at the front the stretched rear from the older model BYD Han
relax mate it’s his job to nitpick. otherwise he will be labeled as paid by China. 😅
this guy has misinformed about byd, he may be have personal problem or has "pre-amnesia " sickness, or better he may not work in the carguide.
Was the car's steering set to comfort or sport? There's a big difference in feel
BYD has never be an EV only maker 😂
I think the point is that previous models available in Australia were EVs.
BYD went full BEV plus PHEV 2 years ago stop spreading lies. You own a lot of Telsa?
@@thedualtransition6070 maybe you should google what car byd started with. I remember when I was young back in Beijing they had models copied from Toyota.
@@Tuzi523 Maybe you should take an english comprehension test. Of course I understand that BYD started with ICE cars, I am a bloody researcher in the area, and that does not change the fact that they went fully EV 2 years ago. Most Chinese manufacturers started off with joint ventures with foreign manufacturers, now they have outgrown those JVs.
@@thedualtransition6070 所以我不认为我说的有错,比亚迪从来就不是只做电车的,不接受反驳谢谢。
Do you hace time for 0 to 60 in All Motors?
Thanks for the review. Question: is the charging AC only? Or both AC & DC options? The GWM Haval H6 PHEV has both AC & Faster DC charging.
It does DC as well. Owners manual is available on BYD site.
@@sthop10 thank you! 👍
Wish I could have bought this instead of the irritating CX-60 I currently own. Though very disappointing to see we didn't get the bigger battery they offer elsewhere!
What do you find irritating about the CX-60?
Just in case you don't know, Mazda is doing some free upgrades to address some of the
cx60 problems
What's the exact getting clearance of this vehicle in mm?
Alright cool, now when do we get the seagull ?
Interior looks better than all other same class vehicles, unbelievable !
BYD has never be an EV only maker
The styling and quality interior already a winner over its rivals.
well, byd actually have been made gasoline engine car from about 20yrs ago
You're driving the model with the grey/blue interior but we don't get a proper look at it! Plenty of shots of the black/brown but we only glimpse the grey blue from a still photo of the dashboard.
is this sealion having the 5th gen DMi?
BYD just released its 5th gen DMi on two sedan cars and that hybrid system can drive 2400 km with a full tank.
Probably not.
其实比亚迪最大的优势是混动
Can't wait for the crash tests, but liking the rest of the package and the realistic pricing. What's the chances of a dealer network?
Aside from Toyota being a established name, I don't think this RAV4 is playing in the same league in terms of technology, interior and other specs. It's even would be beyond what Luxus can offer in other areas such as battery and electronics.
I agree will cancel my rav 4 order and buy this instead
BYD is a car manufacturer who is just really good at creating battery
BYD is a battery manufacturer who is just really good at creating car
Lets just ignote BYD's extremely long history with making Hybrids in china in the early 2000's i suppose
Is a shame to have one of Aussies big platform to do a car review that doesn't have the full fact details.
Should clarify that BYD makes ICE vehicles, not just EVs. If talking about just the Aussie market then it’s a correct statement, rather was. The Shark will be a DM-i as well, so a hybrid.
Get used to having cars without spare tyres, most cars don't have it anymore.
Having a Mustang without spare tyre for last 8 years, never needed one anyway. In fact, averaging 15000 km per year, keeping tyres in good condition and replacing them when its required, didn't need a spare tyre for last 30 years.
My gods abandoned what? BYD started off making conventional cars!
Lol stop harping on the same string - no spare wheel, could do better byd. Lol
lol BYD started building ICE cars first then hybrids then EVs...... get your facts right mate
Thanks for the great review Byron……quite a low score at the end though?
Nothing is said about real life range on the battery and what is fuel consumption when battery is depleted and how the hybrid system works in this case.
According to a Chinese reviewer who tried to deplete the battery (~18 kWh) and the fuel tank (~64 L), it's maximum range on highways (average speed ~100km/h) is over 1000km.
According to some other reviews, pure battery range in cities (AC off) is around 110-120km (sometimes reaching 130km), much higher than the claimed WLTC range 100km.
3:36 seem very bias comment there, dont think it look like Maccan at all.
Byd are not an EV only manufacturer they are a battery company that entered the ev market and are doing awesome they got me interested
More ev please... We like to see .. those hilux and ranger hoons
"Dinosaur fossil fuel technology!!!"
Yeah when the charging infrastructure in the country is still in Dinosaur era, having a bit of "Dinosaur fossil fuel technology" makes sense.
So Byron THIS is how you look like 😂 - been following you over the decade and beyond reading your many excellent articles on GoAuto - excellent review, this! 👏
Almost all of hybrid and electric car has no spare tyre nowadays. Your reaction makes me fell i should research again. And i found that tesla never used spare tyre in their vehicles.
They have started marketing the song plus in Jamaica 🇯🇲
Good and measured presentation - thanks.
Wow. This guy is kinda hard to listen to
A "Shamelessly" Porshe Macan like nose.
Such uncalled for word. SMH. Another "strike" for d presenter.. for being unprofessional
Getting this one over rav 4 hybrid and tesla
Omg do these people do any research at all. Byd have built deisel and petrol vehicles since the 60s. They have been a major builder of plug in hybrids for years.
Perfect for people who don't understand depreciation.
Sure. If you bought a $140K Audi Q7 TDI 50 in early 2021 like someone I know, you will have lost $60-$65K by the end of this year.
Nothing depreciates like the German brands😮
Don't buy one and your problem solved😅
@@daweigo6851 Problem with German brands nowadays is they can no longer justify the outrageous premium price. Quality is mediocre and no tech differentiation. German ICE engines in 2024 aren't much better than those of 10 years ago.
No international market ICE vehicles.....BYD DM-i cars are all over china
car owners know what is the real deal for EV - BYD !!!
The chinese entry version is less than AUD$30,000
Similar price like yuan plus / atto 3 in china which is translate to AUD$48K here.
Seems that BYD pricing depends on the region. Atto3 is the equivalent of AUD70k in Germany and $48k in Australia
BYD is not an EV only and most Hybrid suv doesnt have spare tyre.... this car channel gives misleading information...
Sadly yep
why is it such a rip off
....In China This car called Song +, selling for 180k RMB, which is around 40K AUD only....why here become 52k???
Politics and weak Aussie dollar
Also Australian auto specifications/standards is different from Chinese ones, so byd has to modify its cars to cater Australian market.
how much is rav4 in Australia? its 110k-200k RMB in China.
@@mingouczjcz3800 silly standards, which piggy back of Europe/ uk and USA with some slight differences
@@Forestriumph-qh5ti LOL it’s like 70-80k here and the sheep love it
This video is just rubbish. If I want you to read out the features of the car, I can literally do that on the website. This is not a car review.
wrg, do, outx, can do, outx etc nay nmw s perfx
That's a ridiculously low score.. Really unfair
BYD is nothing like Telsla, it started build fossil fuel cars years ago
