- Nightmare coming true....Are S65s really this unreliable or is this just bad luck? Maybe this is why BMW ditched the V8. It was running and driving so well until all of a sudden......

Big thanks to Teslong for helping me inspect this engine with the articulating borescope! amzn.to/43SHJu2
Sell it right now...👍
The same thing happened to Speed Academy! they did a rod bearing replacement and the car had catastrophic failure miles later. Probably has to do with tolerances of new bearings.
Thank you too. But, didn't this engine got some "reward" of "engine of the year" ??? Than what's This ??? I Know, that Any V-engines Are Bad 4 maintenance costs + Worse fuel consumption , ... so, i Avoid them as Much as Possible ... Thanks 4 the video.
Well time to become a lot more familiar with the M539 Restorations channel, he did an S65 rebuild about 4 months ago. I'm sure he will be happy to help point to the right sponsor and people who know what is needed. You've got this just like all your other big projects.
100% Sreten is the man to call.
His videos are awesome
exactly what i said few videos back. :D
Literally step by step bro is a goat. I would have that series playing in the background while WFH
Could not agree more, Sreten, the guy that runs the channel knows BMW's like his own pocket. Absolutely love his videos
Dang! That Cylinder looked like the inside of a blender 😂
Hahahaha yes
I mean it’s not funny but kinda is😂
You should reach out to “I Do Cars” as he has several and would probably be happy to tear yours down for one of his videos to figure out what happened. Win/win!
Definitely do this!
This was my first thought, also. Great minds think alike!

bro dropped the hardest intro to cylinder #3 😭
😂😂😂😂
This is your opportunity for TH-cam growth! People love schadenfreude! Take it out and pull it apart and go completely Sreten on it!
Sreten @M539Restorations knows a lot about this engine. Maybe he can give you a heads up.
Ah yes, the BMW goat himself Sreten
His e60 m5 has 260,000km on it and runs mint! (Might be due to him doing a bottom end rebuild)
Positive spin on it!
LS-Swap: Financial sense.
S65 rebuild: AUDIENCE SENSE!
Good luck, Matt! 👍😁👍
Another s65 will just blow up again.

I absolutely loved my e90 M3 - maybe the best driving car I’ve ever had. But man - this video made me glad I sold it. I lived in dread of a rod-bearing issue that would trigger a repair I couldn’t afford.
After looking in the cylinder, I had to pick my jaw back up from the ground.
Same!
Me too 🤣
After watching M539 and what he went thru with trying to rebuild these engines (the V8 and V10s) this is probably gonna involve a new one. That block is toast. That sucks bro.
You can fit cast iron sleeves to these blocks
Seems like this was a problem in timing. This engine has hydraulic timing tensioners, and if one gets stuck due to varnish / not being serviced regularly, they let off the tension and your valves can skip timing. That weird sound you were hearing before could be chain slapping the tensioner or rattling about. If you're thinking about rebuilding this engine, probably the best place to learn is M539 Restorations channel. He hand built this baby on camera with all the torque specs and proper factory procedures, a real goldmine of information. I really hope this won't mean you're selling the car, because this is a great car for the channel!
Damn man thanks for this info
Agree.
Also the nikasil doesnt look good con some cylinder walls.
I had the Rod bearings done on my E90 M3 after a ton of research. I fortunately was steered in the direction of experts who advised that rod bearing replacement isn't a straight forward job if you do it correctly, as in, measure for wear and tear as sometimes you may need to use different size bearings. Also, it has been determined that the main bearings wear out at a similar rate so they should be replaced as well when doing the rod bearings. After having both done, I am so pleased for the peace of mind very time I drive the car. It's my daily and I love it. If you go for a quality rebuild, you'll have the same peace of mind and will experience this awesome car for yourself.
C'est mon daily aussi mais j'ai les actionneurs de papillon en panne électronique.
Je pense qu'en ville il s'abîme plus vite que prévu .
I learned this before with my e46 m3. A cheap m3 is an expensive m3 and this proves it 😂
Very true! But good video content.
There is nothing more expensive then a cheap BMW lol.
Sure there is, a cheap Porsche lol
Cheap Ferraris are even more expensive! :)
Same with my cheap e46 m3 melted a piston right after purchase but i will still get profit if i sell because it was so cheap
I'm so sorry this happened to you. These are such fun cars to own and drive, but all that joy is easily taken away when reliability gets in the way. I hope you're able to figure it out. Let's hope it's a blessing in disguise and helps your channel grow! (First time I'm seeing your channel was being reccomended this video).
Hopefully it helps me grow!
Im a GenX who owned 11 BMWs in my life. Whenever I heard an engine noise, I stopped the car and towed it to the dealer. It was an expensive hobby. 😅

I honestly did not expect the cylinder to look like that! That’s pretty gnarly oh my gosh.
This is the main reason I am staying away from gettin a e92 M3 but man they do sound beautiful and look amazing

Love Saturday morning Matt Ross uploads!
Glad you like them!
Probably crankshaft was too worn and would not accept new bearings. This is common when changing bearings through the oil pan without measuring the crankshaft. Look "BMW M3E92 - Wybuchł Silnik Dlaczego ???- Grupa Rajdowy Felix", he's got same isue in e92 after rod bearings change. The piston looks also the same.
or even those wack jobs from Canada ...Speed Academy ...engine shat out a rod right after a sump method rod bearing replacement.
@@danielcgomez For speed academy, I think their main bearings failed
@@FailofWar127 nope ...it was the no.1 rod bearing that spun.
@@danielcgomez Nope, FailofWar127 was right, No1 mains bearing failed (see their video at 16.36) which in turn took out the rod bearings.

That sucks dude. Hope you get great content from this if nothing else. Keep up the outstanding work.

Hang in there Matt. It’s upward from here. At least you know what happened. Things will work out.
Its 3rd s65 that goes BOOM BOOM on YT in recent months, first one was SpeedAcademy. the fun fact was peter said "OH what a motor!" and a second after that engine gave up,2nd one was M539 restoration, and 3rd one is yours.
There is also a big German TH-camr called JP Performance, his E92 M3 also blew up on him 😂😂😂
Didn’t M539 buy it already broken?
Make it 5 now th-cam.com/video/WuXVC3nwGg8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=P6Jznfe4-D0tNZot
Yes M539 bought his m3 with a broken crankshaft
Maybe it's intentional....
Hope you find a quick and economical solution. A subscriber from the other side of the world. Good luck and chin up.
Thank you very much!
Rod bearing spun most likely. Be good to see the bottom end too. Great channel Matt, love the Porsche build too👍👍
Love the content - cool project!
You could hear the engine rattling on start up at the 56 second mark. Weird because the inside of the engine looked super clean in your previous video
Pretty sure this is totally normal for S65 starting up. If it's not, then... ah fk... cos mine does that if I haven't started it up for a day or two.
Probably a tensioner pumping up
Speed academy also did their rod bearings and the motor popped like a week later, i guess if you diy it make sure you get the right bearing and make sure the torque specs are accurate
Didn't the car they work on had a main bearing failure?
That car had problems already from the jump, probably a main bearing failure and previous owner abuse.
Dang, Matt, tough issue with the Bimmer!
Even at that, great editing and I loved the suspense prior to revealing piston 3 - well played! :)
Thanks!
Vanos system
And the timing
You should do it before you go for a drive or test it before
Even with the new engine change the vanos and the timing it is always a good idea to for these motors
No, S65 has dual vanos which rarely ever fails. S65 also uses hydraulic lifters, so no need for valve adjustment…and zero reason to ever reset timing unless you replace plastic OEM vanos covers with metal washers.
Welp....can't say I expected to see that sorta carnage. Wow. Very curious to know what caused it.
You have some slight form of bore score in 2 silinders. I would personally rebuild, if the crank (it probably will if the bottom half of the rod is still on there) is ok it is salvagable. Sure it takes time and money but you'll learn a lot from it.
Oh Man.... I feel your pain... But if everything you bought was perfect... where would your channel be! Good luck, and I'm double subscribed now!
Double sub thanks!!! Haha
M539 Restorations Can Absolutely Help Guide you if you go the rebuild route
TH-camrs made the S65 and S85 engine trending on rod bearings issue, You should check the forums on the S62 engine and the dreaded carbon build up it was like a virus that at the end of reading the threads u would feel u might have a carbon build up issue…This type of engine issue became a plague up to this day, which begs the question that ive been meaning to find out as to how many engine failure these engines have that was caused by rod bearings? and not user error because ive only seen deep scouring on a handful but no bent rods or engine failure. Ive owned and still own M cars and have them all boosted with all stock internals. Per my experience for this specific engine i had the VF and The ESS supercharger on my e92 and can't complain and didn't mess with the rod bearings or whatsoever. I think the key on the cars is first read manual i know its boring but BMW didnt just produce the manual just to look proper and cute at the same time. Proper warmup is key i mean it should be on top of ur list. At the end day i'd say get an oil analysis from blackstone first should be in order, next would be compression and the usual suspects on checking the health of the engine before doing the surgery on something not needed to begin with. I hate to say this and sympathize as well but my verdict is user error.
Btw before i forget make sure ur tools are up to spec specially torque wrench and example would be just simply dropping this tools can mess their calibration. And as car enthusiast to another… my advice is to "Treat every build as if it is ur last and always be positive it will help u greatly not just in building ur dreams cars but in life in general" Hope to see the rebuild, learn from it and make it better" Good luck
This is such retarded levels of copium to defend a shit design from BMW.
It's a shit design, just like b6/b7 Audi S4 plastic timing chain tensioners and early c63 head bolt. A shit design is a shit design.
Idk why people defend these piece of shit s65 and s85 engines. BMW is all about the inline six cylinder anyways.
That sucks but it happens no matter the brand. I have a e46 m3 for 12 years no issues I do all work and keep up on maintenance. I will doing a full coolant system refresh here this summer
My guess is that timing readjusted coming back home so you didn't hear it until you drove it again. Sounds like it broke timing tbh, but hopefully you'll make a video and we'll see!! Something small definitely worked it's way into something bigger really fast though, sorry to hear this man!
I've never seen failure like that just come out of nowhere, not without boost. 😂 It could be anything. Rough luck buddy. Coyote swap it, because everyone does ls swap, then just toss the plastics back on top, nobody will ever know. 😂😳
Same thing happened to me on my s65 with 50k miles on it only 4 months ago. Same exact cylnder. If you don’t torque the rod bearing bolts the right way they come loose and this happens. New engine $15k+ for a healthy one..
Speed academy also had their s65 e90 pop after not long, people who diy it often screw things up and wonder why their motor pops not long after
I torqued them to spec with new rod bolts
One of the best editing channels on TH-cam keep it up
Appreciate that thanks!
Being that the rod bearings were just replaced, I was leaning towards a VANOS issue for that noise. But I’m not sure that would cause a piston to detonate like that. Possibly something VANOS failure related ran through the engine and blocked oil flow to that rod bearing, then it let go due to oil starvation. Interested to see what the crank bearings look like. Good luck!
Vanos doesnt fail on s65’s unless its the plastic cover on the end of the cam, vanos failure was only a thing on early s85’s not s65’s
Possibly they used silicone to reseal the engine after rod bearing change. They used too much-> excess silicone magically ended up in the oil squirter which caused the failed cylinder to detonate due too lack of cooling. Possibly also the reason why the other cyl 4 driver side had scoring because of lack of cooling-> too much thermal expansion-> scoring.
@@user-eu9ub8kj9j it’s rare, but happened to my neighbour.
No silicone used by me!
well that piston pistoff
Great channel! Coyote swsp would be awesome! It would fit the personality of the car better than an LS.

Haha thanks!
I'm gonna go with main bearing failure! I love your videos and this project. i hope you can find a new engine!
Fingers crossed!
I think it’s understood, now, why you’ve seen more views on these vids! This was probably expected by a lot of viewers. You got this, though!
Holyy I didnt expect that much carnage in one cylinder
A BMW dealership mechanic told me that they're great cars, but when the factory warranty runs out, so should you.
meh, I've had one since 2008. Insanely reliable car, no joke.
The problem with those cars you know what is it?
BAD OWNERS
You had warnning sounds n ignored em
Yes
Could be a lot of different variants. I’d guess perhaps fuel injector stuck open on cyl 7 (if I’m not mistaken )and washed down all the oil. Or crankshaft was too worn.
Sorry to see Matt
Sorry Matt. That truly sucks. Maybe consider an LS swap. I'm only half-joking. Cheaper, much more reliable, lighter, can build tremendous power . . . and did I mention cheaper?

Upper rod bearing failure, caused the piston to fall too far in the cylinder bore, rings then hit the sleeve stopping the piston, rod then went through the piston causing the damage you’ve got.
It certainly seems like it was a problem that had been growing since before. I had the same car for several years and had issues with the rod bearings sticking.
But I caught it early.
Should have filmed your wife's reaction to the news lol
Hahaha
If you can rebuild this engine, perfect opportunity for a 4.4 stroker kit!!
Gonna be very tough - that Cylinder needs sleeving at the least and you gotta pray the damage doesn't extend all the way to the bottom so the sleeve has a lip to sit on.
@@yalkhazali71 I honestly don’t think that engine can be saved. That block will do a great job as a center table on a living room!!
Sorry for the loss, but your misery is our content. 🤣That block is toast, get a replacement block or engine and do a full performance build as much as your budget will allow. Look at this way you will end up with a reliable car and not driving around wondering if that day is gonna be the day it goes boom so in the long run you will enjoy the car more, secondly your subs get some very interesting content along the way. Everyone's a winner!! Wish you the best of luck with it and I will be staying tuned.
My advice would be with every car that hasn’t ran in a long time and you are not familiar with the history of it, do a compression test! With most engine blocks it is not that much work to reach the spark plugs. I won’t say that this would have prevented the engine malfunction but if it would make that much compression, and you would enter the cilinder with the camera, you would already see some damage and possibly prevent further damage! However nice car! Hope to buy one myself to restore it

Damn man. That really sucks!
You should take advantage of that misfortune and turn it into something good. Put in the BMW V10 engine from the M5.
Something good??? 😂😂😂 He'd need 2 more rod bearings. The more pistons the worse it is to fix
@e39lover73 ok, so in your opinion no pistons are better. Then nothing will break. Great idea.
@@JC.LC. yeah that's true 🤣 but no, I mean the high reving V8 is already good, and assuming the ending is still ik decent shape all it should need is a new piston, crank, and either a head or sleeves. Depends how bad it was. Would be worth spending time 2-3k fixing that than a whole 8k for and drivetrain swap with a custom driveshaft and all that
@e39lover73 maybe. But he has a youtube channel, and he would get more views and people interested and not mentioning better performance by changing the engine for the V10.
@@JC.LC. the views part is true for sure, the performance wouldn't be all that crazy if a difference, the V10s weighed a significant amount more. But I won't lie it would be a cool custom one off swap
A very similar thing happened to a motorcycle I owned. I got my bike back from the garage and I noticed it didnt feel right. When I pulled up I had a quick listened to the engine. I noticed there was a metallic tapping coming from the engine (At that point I was not aware of what engine knock was). However, once I revved it up a little it went away. So, there I was, driving at 70 mph on the highway, all vulnerable and that, when the bike went from 70 to 0 in under a second. Before I knew it the fuel tank was smashed straight in between my legs and the bike had completely died. The bike refused to start and every time I turned the engine over there was a lovely metallic jangle from it. I had it towed to a garage (at quite a significant expense I might add) where I was told the piston had given the valve a little kiss. Engine fucked. The end.
I like how are you so clam after what you discovered. I wouldn’t be able to hold it together. Especially if I’ve just bought it. If I remember correctly, these engines are prone to rod bearing failures? Am I correct in guessing that’s what it was?
Time to check out the GM engine conversion kits. Thats got to be a much cheaper route than a used engine of the same type and troubled history. Good luck!
😪 boring. Also these engines don’t have that much of a troubled history. The only major thing is changing out the rod bearings. Otherwise it’s just old plastic that can break and just send the car into limp mode. Also this v8 makes the car what it is, if he’s going to ls swap it he should’ve bought a different bmw like a 335i with a blown engine
@@brokeq50boi80 good points so let's see what he does. A used engine isn't going to come cheap. Lots to consider here.
@@TomHamilton-rg7cp yeah there is a lot of engines to consider. I personally think the tt v8 from the newer m5’s would be unique. Also it’d still technically have a BMW heart. It’d just be a shame to buy one of these now increasingly rare v8 m3’s just to swap the engine out. I just wish the motors for these cars weren’t an arm and a leg brand new
Pushing a car, in rain and in crocks was a humanizing bit of character development! Yikes that cylinder is hamburger

If I saw this video before hunting for a good spec E93 I probably wouldnt have gone on the adventure. Fortunately I saw too many awesome S65 YT vids and did it. A lot of PM money but finally got it in near show room condition. Sorry for your loss- Mine had the bearings done a year/8,000miles ago and still has a full warranty until 100K. Its not on the market but if someone throws 65G in my face *maybe ill take it. Really curious what you find out as for the cause- If I had to guess Vanos related or the bearings didnt take.
It’s unfortunate that the BMW had a catastrophic failure, but it could be saveable. You could do a full engine breakdown and see how bad the damage is and see if it can be massaged with a good bore and honing. Thats good content! If it’s too far gone, LS swap 2.0! This time, supercharge it! Or get a wrecked Hellcat and swap the engine from that. Don’t let this hiccup get you down, Matt. This is creating content for your channel and a new adventure. Keep up the good work! I’m looking forward to what you choose to do with this one.
This was painful to see! Hope to hear what the cause was, new to the channel but happily own a problem free e92 m3 stock let it warm up before every drive and it has 102k on the clock. Never had any issues fingers crossed. I would never do rods myself mostly because I would fuck it up. Much respect.
There was white smoke coming from the exhaust tips. Clear sign you were burning oil.
That ticking at the front is water pump mine sounds same.
rod bearing failure, common issue in bmw, that rattle you heard before it blew, was more than likely the sound of low oil pressure, the bearings were possibly already hurt
He replaced the rod bearings in the first episode of this series lol
@josephscaringi6442 didn't watch first episode. I am a new subscriber here
Nice vid. Cylinder number 4 driver side was defo not fine. S65 is made from alusil and the bores need to be smooth smooth. Thats also why you cant see cross hatching, since its not meant to have it. Piston could have exploded because of many reason. Maybe unsufficient lubrication from the oil squirter causing too much heat. Maybe stuck valve and piston flew in there... Also, if you dont want the engine, you can send it to me lol :)
Thanks for the info!
Nice Garage you have there
It's small lol
omg sorry bro sucks bad!!! Try to find a b7 rs4 ❤ mine 4 yrs only had to put coils on it . Very reliable cars
I wonder if if it jumped timing and shared a valve off which caused the piston to explode taking the rest of the engine out on the way down I have had many of these engines and the only time I’ve had them fail is when it has been Rod bearing related I did notice in your clip when you started it there was quite loud rattle for a few seconds while oil pressure was building and this could’ve been a bad timing chain so it would be interesting to see if it is actually jumped timing The loud rattle could also have been lower oil pressure or a lazy oil pump theory of course
When you showed cylinder 3, my jaw dropped🫣
The failure on that cylinder was the rod journal. Either was not lubed enough or the assembly was not correct. The engine (especially that cylinder wall) is toast, might be able to pick up a used high mileage one for cheap and do a full rebuild! (Streten at m539 did full rebuild on his e90 with lighters pistons and bigger cams so possibly an idea for this?)

My guess is oil starvation. That engine oil sensor was just at about minimum and driving it in the hills would do it. Sucks that this happened to you.
Matt the best m3 is an m3 without the s65 LS swap it or in my case ford fg turbo barra as much as i like the e90 e92 i would never go build or by a bimmer engine when my other 335i needs an engine LS or barra all day long but i feel your pain that's why mine is barra powered finding a good s65 is still a crap shoot you get one BUT then your obliged to do the bearings in it even if they have already been changed you are on a slippery slope my friend but keep ya chin up you may find a diamond in the rough cheers from down under
Oof that sucks. Had this same thing happen to e92 m3. A new (used) motor cost me $8k and I had a local shop swap it out (along with every gasket and preventable maintenance while it was out) for $7k. I would highly recommend M539 Restoration's video series. Even though I didn't swap the engine out myself, it was great to learn how everything worked and what parts I needed to order
Did they replace main bearings also? just curious
@@justfasial01 No my mechanic advised me that's its too expensive to be worth doing as its a lot more intensive of a job than just doing the rod bearings.
