'Bad news': Reactions from Brussels as Moldova EU referendum hangs in the balance • FRANCE 24

- A referendum on Moldova joining the EU hung in the balance early Monday with almost all votes counted, as President Maia Sandu blamed an "unprecedented assault on our country's freedom and democracy" in a vote marred by fears of Russian meddling amid the war in neighbouring Ukraine. With more than 98 percent of the votes counted, the "yes" vote was slightly ahead at 50.03 percent, while the "no" camp - long been ahead from the start of counting - stood at 49.97 percent, according to results published by the election commission. FRANCE 24’s Dave Keating brings us the reactions from Brussels.

Almost the same way Biden "won" over Trump in 2020
in 2003 when we had our EU referendum in Malta, the YES won with only 53%. Nowadays if you had to hold another referendum it would definitely be a lot higher than that as we have benefited enormously from being in the EU

@@alexsilent5603 booming economy, wealth growth, freedom of movement, opportunities to study and work in other countries in the EU, the ability to take the car and drive freely in any EU country with no restrictions, travel that costs 1/10th the price it used to, massive boost to tourism, a place at the table and a say in European affairs that impact us directly, EU development funds, mobile phone roaming rates that cost the same in any EU country as back home... to name but a few..

To be honest...we all know that nobody is desperate for Moldova and they will never going to be a EU member... Some conflict stimulated by big forces for sure but hardly ever any benefits... society is entering big divisions and turbulence

@@vadergrdso half of people are rusky loving? Even with million (25%) who already live in EU and still 50-50, without those who live in Russian sphere... I would call that as a clear pro-EU fiasco.
More over, it will bring inner conflicts if it is forcefully implemented with no real majority.
In any case I can bet that Moldavia is not going to be EU member during our life time, even if you are 5 years old in this moment.

Moldova you don't know what ye have let yourselves in for. This reminds me of when Ireland joined this. We could not join fast enough. It has been down hill ever since and it's now time for Ireland to leave and get out Sovereignty back.🙏
Why is bad news? Is it Moldova an independent country or does it have to comply with EU political views? Are you going to send a Victoria Nuland to overthrow the government that pleases us? The Russian meddling is nothing compared to the European and American interferences! And about Georgia, you are talking about a Russian style law that already exists in the UK, USA etc. Where is the problem? Can't you find any better reason to overthrow their government?
Regardless of the result, I think the EU would be skeptical of Moldova's ascension to the EU because that would mean a very strong minority of Moldovans doesn't want to join the EU.
Not even minority...most EU votes are from people already living in EU. They need connections but majority who live in Moldova is against EU.
This is start of really hard period for people in Moldova. I would not like to be in their skin...
That didn't stop them wanting Ukraine into Nato.
An advantage of less than 1% is almost a statistical error.
At the same time, Sandu blocked opposition parties and the media throughout the year.
But it didn't help.
Wrong; all president candidates except Sandu were from opposition. If media were indeed blocked, it would have been 60% pro or better.
This referendum has caused more confusion more division and more question mark since the referendum was approved with slight Margin meaning 50% of the population is against of joining EU. It's better not to make hasty decisions and don't make same mistake as Ukraine when significant minority of its population was against joining EU and NATO which in turn led to Civil war. But in Moldova its a whopping 50% its better to play both camp rather them putting all fruits in one basket
Yep ...there is no independence in the EU ...there is only rule and law from brussels and tens of thousands of regulations and directives forced on you by frank/germanic dominated Europe

EU gov ‘news services’ trying to imply uk is asking to rejoin again & again is delusional. Nobody talks nor cares about eu (not counting a hardcore estimated 5-10% which are all apparently on TH-cam & never shut up despite almost a decade passing), eu didn’t even make it into top 10 concerns in the recent election. It is true there was a poll showing 59%, but it was taken at the time of the last election when uk public was pissed off and threw every ruling party out. As for Moldova, that result is confusing, it is a very different situation and should be a lot more appealing to join eu, - so the fact the result is this close either way is a huge flashing red warning sign.
