      Definitely need good ventilation when you're using any type of paint removers and Siren, you should really try to get yourself some protective gloves for your hands. That stuff is horrible on your skin. I know I've literally burnt my fingers touching some paint strippers just by accident when stripping furniture. Best of luck though, I know this all has to get very frustrating. You seem to have more patience than most would.

      Thank you!! Well, I knew I would be stripping that paint when I bought the boat, I just didn't realize they'd literally painted it not knowing that the sump pump didn't work, and just painted it closed. For a true paint stripper, I'm absolutely wearing gloves and I have a decent respirator too for stuff like that. This stuff was super mellow, not really strong (even though I had plenty of ventilation). Thanks for being here for it!@@melissaboutwell2001

      Thanks! I have a multi tool and very well may do something like that. Was hoping just to tighten up the deck quickly like this just for the rain on the way without getting into a big project but once it’s home we need to figure out if we want to “patch it better” for a while while we tackle the rigging or just let it go until we can pull it. I’m probably going to want to patch it again.

    It took me about 5 days solo to completely remove my old teak decks and fill all the screw holes with epoxy. On my tayana 37
    Then it took 2,000.00 in treadmaster diamond and 500.00 in epoxy and 2 weeks to put it down.
    It came out amazing. That was 2008. It's still great. I did the desert sand color but I would do the teak color if I did it again.

      @@TheSirensLog the fiberglass deck under the teak is supper thick laminate. You do not need to add fiberglass
      Also the core is a checker board with resin between each piece so if water gets in to a part it won't travel far.

    I’ll help y’all change the deck when y’all get ready to rip it off and replace it. As for your plumbing problems, does it have a macerator unit for your “solids”? I don’t think a bilge pump would handle that crap… Amazon has a few of those listed under $400 that are familiar names to me. Especially Jabsco. Y’all could probably use regular TP too! Don't be disheartened. In the beginning with a new boat a lot of things break but after a few years you know what has to be done and it is not such a big issue. A compost toilet us maybe much cheaper and simpler. A shower can be taken at the marina.....

    Pro tip: Set your teak sealants in a pot of hot water on the stove. Once the material/outside is warm, it should come out much easier. Also puncturing a large hole helps when opening up the caulk tube. Id change the fuel filter in the outboard, seems like its getting starved for fuel when your compensating so much with the choke. A carb cleaning wouldn't hurt either. $10 your head needs a new joker valve, its a $6 dollar part at a marine store and a 10min fix. As for the sump pump; just leave it draining into the bilge for now; you have larger problems to address, a sump pump is a luxury at this point. Id make a list and prioritize your necessities. Good luck! -Capt. Lo

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, yeah I just ended up buying an electric caulk gun because it’ll be a good asset for working on this deck in the future anyway. I had continually make the hole bigger inside and the nozzle hole bigger. It was coming out of the tube, but not the end, it was just so thick. Could have been an old batch but it did work with the electric.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh the sump pump, Hal figured that out and it’s all put together in a way that is totally not ideal. The reason for needing to get in there though is because they had black water leaking into there and it’s tied into the bilge pump. It’s wreaks in there so it would be nice to get it out but we did move to bigger projects.

    You need to replace the joker valve in the head. $15.

    40 plus years of wood boat ownership speaking........In my town a gallon of asphalt roofing cement costs about $20. It's messy to work with, but it's proven to seal leaks, above the waterline and below. Only temporary and if leak is small below waterline. With a putty tool, or even a bit of plywood, pat the stuff liberally into the leak area and in a wide area surrounding. Press it into the holes and seams. Especially in hot Florida, it will form a tacky surface in a few days. It can be applied to a wet surface, just be sure to press it into the holes and cracks so it sticks good. The stuff is horrible messy, but that's what makes it so good for sealing leaks...it sticks to everything, especially your hands. Added benefit, it kills all bacteria that it touches, no more rot forming if you have tarred properly. Can be thinned with cooking oil to get it to soak into the wood better. Linseed oil is often used, but it's also high priced, special for boat owners...and what is Linseed Oil? It's flaxseed oil, the non food grade of flax seed oil. Cooking oil. Asphalt roofing patch is the modern easier to use version of the tar that wood sailing ships were famous for, and why sailors were often referred to as "tars" or " jack tars". Can be used on leaky decks where you will need to walk, add a layer of cloth, like canvas on top, tacked down and try not to step on it to much till it's hardened up a bit in the sun. Sikaflex and the like is good for sealing windows and port lights. But it's always overpriced in marinas. About 35 years ago, I caulked some of the seams of a wood boat with Sikaflex. It's tough stuff and holds very well...to its self, but not to the wood. A year later I had to pull it out and replace with white lead type caulking. Taking it out was easy, loosen an end and pull, it came out in one long string, all 45 ft. It stuck to its self good, but not to the planking. At 66 years old, I still have a wood boat, that's has been thoroughly tarred top side. No leaks, and it's where there is lots of rain. Hope this helps.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jimjames5416 because we aren’t 100% positive that we want to throw that teak away. Many people salvage the old teak and glue it back now after refurbishing it, along with new pieces where needed. This very well may be something that we do so I don’t want to use anything but the correct product, something that we can sand, in the event we choose to go that route. The other temporary option is to leave it where it it’s, screwed down, redo a good portion of the seams and sand it and make it “look nice” and also stop leaking for another year, two max, until we can take on the bigger project of removing it. This isn’t the only big project we have with this vessel and we need to be realistic about which projects are more pressing, and unfortunately the deck is secondary to some other things.

    Fuel, Check into stabilizing your new fuel.
    1) Old gas sitting to long will evaperate and leave a residue In the carburetor. If its not fresh It's bad.
    2) The carburetor has a float bowl. and jets and needle valves. These parts need to be cleaned from the residue of old gas. this is why the carbs must be empty when the motor goes into storage.
    3) Remove the spark plugs and read them i.e. is the ceramic cone Tan or Black in color also check for the proper plug occording to the code listed on the plug. The chart will list the proper spark gap required. these little things you should know.
    4) Don't presume the previous owner did anything right. Don't expect other poeple to follow the maintinace procedure correctly.
    5) Also check the air filter.
    6) Also check the oil level and the Oil condition.
    Note: when the Oil level is low, some motors have a built in safe guard to shut the motor down.

    For the future you can use plastic wrap over that stripper to keep it moist. They also make some kind of scrubby pads to remove the paint, they're blue with white scrubby stuff on the bottom, at least they were 40 years ago when I used some citrus based stripper. Thanks yeah I’d mentioned the plastic wrap in the video but didn’t have any and wasn’t leaving the boat again. lol Yes, the paint has definitely gone down the sides of the grate. Everyone keeps commenting to just razor blade the seal but… lol That’s the first thing we did but you’re right, it’s deeper than that. I had hoped the striper would get in there and help but it’s so thick I quickly saw it was probably not going to be the right tool for the job. I’m going to use a proper paint stripper, Total Boat sent us everything I need to overhaul the entire head, and then if I can’t get it up using a few other techniques, I’ll use my multi tool to run down the edges but that’s a last resort. Thank you!!!

      I have a multi tool that I bought a couple years ago for the boat, and that will be the next move IF we can’t easy it up. Those grates are very expensive and custom, and while I could likely repair it myself, I want to avoid breaking it or damaging it. At one time, I’m sure it did fit loosely, which is why I’d like to get the paint off and then see how tight it is. I have a couple more things to try to get it up and then I’ll love to something more intrusive. Thanks!

      0:05 It never should have been painted.. the teak has to breath.. it's all swelled up tight. And the paint coats have glued it together toghter then the original wood. Gallley fosset - Air is in the lines, hence why its spraying. Maybe a pump issue /needs to be serviced, in the line from the watertank.
    Head - Use a bucket if nesseracy. Until the issue is fixed.

      Wax paper works great - easier to work with than plastic, and the serrated edge on the box makes cutting to size easy. The "safe" strippers really do need 12-24 hours to work, especially with multiple layers of oil based paint. Also if you have latex over oil based, it likely needs a second application since the latex will lift first and pull it away from the lower layers.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I assume that to be exactly what happened because I would assume (and not to be rude, but you learn a little about people when you move onto a boat they owned) she used a latex paint over the satin finish varnish that has been on that teak since 1976. Nothing appears to have been sanded. I kinda had that thought, that it may be something like that with the stripper because of that that but wasn’t sure. In my experience, latex usually peels off oil based paint, but this isn’t peeling off but… it’s old varnish under there so it is more porous I’m sure.

      @glenndavis479 Yes and No. Somethings we knew but a lot of this worked during the survey. Some of our problems are just learning 20+ year old systems. Boats break. All of them. New boats break 6 months after buying them. Watch early Sailing Zatara videos. They bought a brand new Beneteau and things broke instantly on it. You just have a warranty on a new boat. Usually 1 to 2 years on systems. A boat is a floating short with metal components floating in salt water getting beat on by the sun daily.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Many times on boats when they’ve been sitting unused for some time and someone comes in for a survey, things “work”, but then after some use, they immediately break. That’s to be expected. A survey doesn’t give you the whole picture, it gives you an idea. We both have enough experience in the maritime industry to know to expect further problems after the survey, but that’s why we wanted a few weeks with the boat before sailing it around the state. We needed that time to break her in again so these things have a chance to break if they’re going to.

I wanted to use the “correct” products in the event we decide to redo the seams in the deck and live with it for another year, OR if we decide to salvage the teak, this product is sandable. I didn’t have cellophane to put over the stripper and I didn’t to get moving on that and after running errands all day, I refused to leave again. lol The thick areas stayed thick overnight though! Happy for that. I’m going to strip that entire head with stripper soon. (TotalBoat has sent us everything we need for that whole job, so that’s a whole video in itself)

Better to move back to another project until we have a few things we need that day and then go at once. We’re doing a lot more around here than we’d ever have time to film. Projects are getting completed, but some things are being prioritized over other for sure.

      Oh your boss is 100% correct. You really shouldn’t paint teak, and if you do, it needs to be a specific paint. Once we slow down, I’d love to do a video on why you don’t paint teak and inform people of the reasons, and then maybe make a second video on the different product options you do have and how they work. It seems like a lot of new boat buyers just do whatever is convenient, without realizing they’re damaging the boat in doing so. Right now my bulkhead has basically been soaking up Blackwater and it can’t dry itself out because the paint is holding it in. Kinda gross!!!
      Good luck with your boat search if you buy next year!! Prices are dropping.

      @@TheSirensLog Oh thanks for the reply. Yeah it been many years ago I was told that.
      And just thought about it when you showed yours has been done. Black water problems not good and kind of gross but I am sure you are going to handle that.
      Hope your teak is not forever ruined. Years ago I had to cut out floor in my bath that was soaked with black water. When it dried. It still smelled bad. Thanks for the well wishes !
      You guys rock,, down to earth friendly folks. Good luck ! I Can’t wait to her sailed !

    did you have a marine engineer inspect the boat and lift out on the dry to do so many hidden nasty,s under water money well spent , a boat definition of same "a long narrow hole in the water you pour $1000s into to keep it from filling up ""i use sika flex on decks works great n but need to tape edges and that deck does needs some work,multi tool with flat blade will do wonders to get that grate out

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes we had a survey. As a yacht broker myself, I always recommend a survey.
      For that grate, we tried some more obvious approaches first before taking it this far, of course none worked. If we can’t get it up after all this, we will use the multitool I purchased for the boat a few years back. I would just like to see how loose it is after removing the paint from it.

    Most likely outboard carbuerator needs dis-assembly, rebuilt, change plug too, lower unit oil. If that fuel is not new, discard, clear fuel available at marina fuel dock --waterpump impeller replace too. STOP SMOKING over top of fuel tank and outboard. Basically this whole boat IS NOT READY TO LEAVE MARINA !!!-----Mikey

      We'd already tried that when we got this far. IF we filmed everything, our videos would be hours long, we'd be here filming weeks longer, and we'd have weeks and weeks of videos. We could literally make a 2 hour video everyday to sum up what we do EACH day. Can't show it all, sorry!! hahaha

    You have to buy the toxic paint remover the safe stuff doesn’t work that well, remember acetones, and other flammable fumes are heavier than air. Make sure your ventilating the boat well. Ok I will stop being a know it all

That old Jabsco is about $150, the Raritan PH2 with household size bowl(recommended) is $450, my last one purchased--expect 500-$600 now. Had a Tampax make it through once--do not try that one!!. Have had 10 years of living a board, 50 yrs of boats, many females on board--DO NOT be bashful about advising ladies to NOT discard female products in your toilet!!! Hal has alot of patience, more than me. I can understand why they name boats woman names. They are pretty to look at but always have issues, you will never fix all the issues and it would probably be easier to just take all your money and throw it in the ocean...just sayin

    • @haltarpley9237
      @haltarpley9237 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I wouldn't call it patience as much as experience. New boats break. I've bought new boats where the pumps went out, running lights stopped working, and steering cable locked up. All in the first 6 months. Watch early videos on Sailing Zatara. They bought a brand new Beneteau and stuff started breaking on it immediately. A boat is just a floating short. Yes, boats are exactly like women. We still get married.

      I drive a Semi all over the country. It probably breaks more than a boat. I have actually been looking at sea kayaks. I used to have one many years ago. I know I'm not going to sail accross an ocean. It is good enough for me to just paddle around near shore. I have traveled around the country for 25 years. People are kinda the same wherever you go. The scenery is just nicer in some places. Hal seems like a good guy to go fishing with.
