Brilliant video again! Finally towing on the Model S, no need for SUVs anymore 👍 They just need to bring the quicksilver paint to this, and add a feature to raise the suspension when you open the door (if people want easier entry/exit), but at least you can already do that by location.
You described so well the feeling when accelerating that much, it goes beyond fun to dangerous. I noticed some of your comments concerning drive modes (P,R,N,D) and speed limit sign recognition might be effected by being a model released in the German market and a result of local regulations or software constraints. In the U.S. (where I am) the S will automatically choose which direction to move in without pressing a button or swiping on screen. Also, when driving in autopilot, my Tesla will adjust its cruise control speed to fit the current speed limit automatically.
The issue we find in the EU and UK is that the speed limit sign recognition isn't very accurate at the moment. It tends to see the speed limit sign on the entrance to roads running off yours and will switch to the speed limit to those. For the set speed in cruise and Autopilot, it will never adjust higher than what you have set, only lower or return to what was set before. Say you go from 40 to 30 then back to 40, that'll work, but if you hit a national speed limit (60 in the UK) then it won't make that change. :) As of today, the car will not adjust the speed limit for variable speed limits or any speed limits signs on highways to avoid false slow downs, it will display them on-screen though.
My Plaid is about 3 months old so it's the latest iteration. When I go into Autopilot most of the time it doesn't drop my speed to the speed limit. I did a 4,700 mile road trip through several states during Thanksgiving week and it seems there were only a few stretches of road where Autopilot limited my speed to the speed limit.
@@autogefuehl Cameras plus AI equals predictive direction choices. The car tells you that, since your facing a garage door, that it believes reverse is the best choice. The driver confirms this by pressing on the brake. Of course, it might not always make the correct choice for you and that is why the on screen selection is there. If the screen doesn’t work, no problem, you’ve got buttons too. Likely that ability has not been enabled in all countries.
“I am not sure this should be legal” is a typical refrain. I have had my S now for a year and it’s the best car I have owned. The performance, the utility and the tech are best in class. The sound system is one of the best I have ever heard. I love driving it, sitting in it and looking at it.
I love my plaid also. Sometimes when other people try and race me I have to slow down to check if they are still coming because after you hit the accelerator it feels like they are not even trying.
@@olekiller11 I feel like a ride operator at Disney. I just look at the car trying to test me and just look at them as if to say “you are not tall enough for this ride son” I actually get embarrassed for them.
Excellent presentation Thomas, always enjoying Autogefuhl! The Model S, with computing power of ten (10) teraflops, has come long way through all these years. Still an upgrade on the brakes is needed I believe! The car has a low center of gravity and a long wheelbase, thus, the rear brakes work harder than a usual car. The regen is not always the best option and extra braking power is needed. So far the progress for Model S is impressive, remember some years ago, the harsh critics from the auto industry... and now the competition is running to meet the level of Tesla...
I was stationed at Rhein Main in the 70s and 80s and the first thing most Americans would do would get on the Autobahn and go as fast as they could in whatever car they were driving. And usually after a few seconds at top speed, they would naturally fall back to about 130 maybe 140 kph, and be happy. The accidents I saw were blood baths. Sometimes TOO MUCH is TOO MUCH.
Glad you have Autobahn! 💥The screen tilting towards the driver is one of the best features in modern cars because most of us drive our cars with screen being basically turned away from the driver at a neutral angle towards the middle of the vehicle, which is completely wrong I think. BMW and now Tesla approach to screen tilt is much better 😎 By the way, I love that engine roar during acceleration is missing, because you will now be surrounded by REAL acceleration noise, such as wind speed, tire sound, wind noise and etc
There was an electric vehicle expo this past weekend here in Central Florida. I dropped by and was able to test drive a Model S and a Model Y Performance. Both interesting cars. But the Model S (not a Plaid) was amazingly fast. I currently own a 2020 C8 Corvette and there is no way it would keep up with the Model S. I can't imagine how fast the Plaid is. I think I could be satisfied with the Model S (non-Plaid) quite nicely, but I am still fascinated with the Plaid. Excellent video and info packed. Thanks!!
@@TheAeroegg I'm saying that when I floor the go pedal in either car, my body says the S is faster. I've done 2.8sec in my C8 and the S seems quite a bit faster. Would have to do some runs with both cars.
@@RobertMacCready That makes sense, the torque out of the electric motors is available right off the bat. I hope you get the opportunity to try out the acceleration in the Plaid, it leaves me stunned, but in a good way! 😲
I've been following you for many years, and you still do some of the best car reviews on the internet. You give a very realistic view of what it would be like to live with a car on a regular basis as well as how a car performs if you like to have fun with your car! This really helps when trying to decide upon which car to purchase. Thank you for all you do!
Note: This Model S Plaid still has a limiter on it! The car is capable of 200 mph (320 kph) BUT... requires the special kit of special brakes and some other body enhancements. Costed at around another $30-40,000. Sadly, the brakes on this model barely match the performance and tend to overheat when the car is pushed hard. So, that's why it is limited to around 165 mph. Any faster requires car adjustments to match.
Sorry, forgot to add... the kit includes more advanced tyres as well as better brakes. Sadly, the total kit is not yet available from Tesla and they haven't given a release date. Apparently, they are testing that kit as being standard on the new Tesla Roadster due out... whenever! lol. Cheers
@@Acevolt Hi Michael. Well, good news about the cost of those brakes! BUT... in order to more safely allow the car to hit top speed of just over 210mph (335kph) the car needs special, high performance tyres also. These are NOT cheap! That's why the original package proposed by Tesla ( a few years ago) was around $30-45 thousand as a package that included the Carbon/ceramic ?? brakes PLUS special tyres PLUS a body modification as well. I've been watching this closely. That "package" is to be automatically included in the new Roadster that is meant to have a top speed of around 250+ mph. Cheers.
What would be of a great addition to your reviews of EVs would be some real life Autobahn energy consumption test, especially with faster models. Like driving at least 20km with 150, 170 and 200kmh.
@@RemoteSpeed007 No, most likely not, NextMove already did tests like this with Model S...not plaid...and Taycan. The Taycan has almost same Efficiency like the Model S, since it is optimized for higher german speed. The Range drops much stronger for the Model S than the Taycan, which has a second gear for this optimization.
@@G_man_ I did a test myself. Model 3 LR, consumption seems to be around 450-500 Wh/km at 233 km/h. I didn't go for a long distance, just a few kilometers to get a reading.
The rear screen is still the old one, current Model S (in the US) comes with a bigger screen size, great review! I got nervous just by watching you accelerating🫣
congrats on the great review! You have been very peculiar in information. I have a question, maybe I missed the information in the video, did the car come with winter tires already? Thank you in advance for your kind reply. Mine should be delivered in a few days! 😜
Honestly I'm not too stoked that CCS2 is our standard when the NACS (Tesla's proposed standard) is so much lighter, leaner and more powerful. But in the meantime, it's definitely an upgrade in terms of charging availability.
Put the car in Track Mode first. It will go significantly faster. Last weekend, my Model S Plaid reached 179.4 mph (288.7 km/h) in a race on a closed airport runway. (There is a video on my channel showing 178 mph.) The car reached that speed in a half-mile, and there was definitely more power available. On the Autobahn, in Track Mode, you should be able to easily surpass that. Let me know if you do! Be safe.
steering wheel does look awkward for bigger turns , feeding the wheel through your hands etc? also middle camera seemed a bit shoogly when in town , would that be due to the large wheels ?
This is a simply brilliant (fun, expert, informative) review of a most phenomenal car - virtuosic work, Thomas. It's easy to see why the Model S has been voted Best Car of the last 70 years - it's near perfect. The upper limits of what is needed (in terms of acceleration and top speed) have been reached with this car - we need go no further. Tesla will, however, continue to refine its performance, handling, and world-beating safety. What a remarkable car, company, and review. Vielen Dank Thomas.
Great review. I look forward to seeing my first Plaid model on the autobahn. It's going to make the German auto manufacturers rethink their future performance cars.
Bit of trivia: S Plaid rated at some 1124hp but independent dyno at 1225hp. Yes they fudge the 2.0 second slightly but other models usually exceed claimed acceleration.
Tesla need to officially make the Plaid like the AMG or M variant. It pretty much already have, but not officially. They also need to do something to make that line a bit more sporty looking over the base models!
The paint colour looks much nicer than the metallic silver colour that comes from the Fremont factory. Is that the original factory paint, or have you had it wrapped?
@3:15 Saw _Star Wars_ at the Forum ( Moorish Revival Architecture, the interior was perfect for taking in the Classic Movie) in Melbourne, October 1977. Still love the original.
Anyone else getting anxiety about the big misalignment between the trunk-lid mounted lights and the body mounted ones? It's stabbing my eyeballs with an ice-pick. Why can't Tesla get their quality 💩 together?
The interior is like in a 20.000 euro car with a big screen. It is a joke for 150.000 euro. Where can you use 1000hp? Buy an eqs it also has a bigger range and also a big screen.
@@dnc3861 well, it is pretty subjective. Also, don't forget people pay millions for a car that does 0 to 60 in 'just' 3 seconds or more... guess you won't be buying a ferrari any time soon then :p
Class act video. Very well done. The main display is too high, it should be adjustable and have a sleep mode. Voice commands should be enough to run the show.
I have a very negative preconception about the yoke... I don't know how this is in Germany but here in France, roads are peltered with roundabouts -- sometimes needlessly so. A yoke in a roundabout? Uh, no. If they offer a "real" steering wheel, however...
Thomas, what about headlights and wipers? Both were disaster in previous model. I owned Raven Performance and at night or in rain driving was annoying. And wind noise at 120km/h, door closing sound, isofix mounted to close to seatbelt lock… I sold it after 9 months. German competition is far away better with this features. How do you compare noise insulation to ex. X5 45e on German autobahn? ;) Rgs from Warsaw.
Auto-High-Beams and wipers have been greatly improved through software updates, honestly not an issue anymore with 2022.40 SW. Only thing missing is recognition of Speed Signs, that feature tries on map data and can be inaccurate. Tesla iterates and improves (most) products with such pace that old experiences do not apply to new cars for long.
@@RobertPuklin there were hardware not software issues. I’m not talking about auto functionality but about poor led quality in compared to matrix or laser lights and wipers with very loud arm mechanism.
@@ogzombieblunt4626 should try and compere to one of German cars. Matrix led or laser light or even wipers… it is a different planet. I’ve used it in Q7, A6 Allroad and now I’ve lasers in X5. TMS was a sad joke.
I have a 2020 ModelX Long Range and it's still the same. Light, light sensor and wiper s u c k hard. Also that you have to move the fckn steering wheel all 10sec is extremely annoying compared to cars with resistative steering wheels like Mercedes S-Class etc.
Powerful BEVs like this should have a safety feature as standard, that to reach full power you would need to engage some system. Imagine going around a parking lot maneuvering, and accidentally you press harder the accelerator pedal.
They can be set to chill mode if the owner wants that. You can also setup a profile for a younger drive with limits. We’ve had ours since last year and it has never been out of Plaid mode. Unless you count drag strip mode. You can’t do any serious runs without using it to optimize the power transfer. Plaid is the daily driver mode and drag strip is the show off mode. It’s all amazing fun even after a year. It still releases adrenaline every time you floor it, but it’s also super easy to control the car even on ice. You really have to mash it to let out the beast.

Love love love my '18 M3P. Drove it to Vegas from Jersey, best drive of my life, especially thru Colorado and Utah. Autopilot and regen worked great on the drive, and I had zero problems supercharging...and I supercharged a sh1tload.
@@RemoteSpeed007 I've had Mustangs all my life, with some fast one, modified ones, ect, and this M3P would blow the doors off every one of them. The other thing, on paper there's a few that will beat the M3P, but on the street it's a different story, similar to the video link you posted.
@@rodulfol Basically a M3P, can't be beaten on a public road in acceleration by any ICE that is 2WD, even if they have 1000hp, they can't get enough traction, so they fall behind. I actually think is a great feature adding sound to the acceleration, despite some criticism from many Media outlets. The instant acceleration is great until you get tired of the gimmick and dizzy all the time.
@@Natak222 no, you are wrong. Only idiot drivers estimate the speed by the sound. If so open the driver door window and listen to sound of the passing air.
Wonderful review and, as others have mentioned, the acceleration demo at about 18 minutes into the video is a blast. I have only driven a Tesla model Y long range with 0-60 in about 4.5 seconds and THAT had me questioning why anyone would want -- or be able to control -- a vehicle with faster acceleration. What I experienced felt like some sort of video game with aliens flying into my face, only in this case it was trees and other vehicles flying at me. I wound up passing on the purchase of the Y because, even the long-range version, had a suspension so stiff it almost rattled the teeth out of my mouth (and I understand that the Model Y performance version has an even stiffer suspension than the one I drove). Fix this problem, Elon, and you'll have one more sale.
You didn’t test the full acceleration potential of the vehicle when you go in plaid mode then choose drag strip mode and the car is much faster then just regular plaid. Also you said Mercedes or BMW competitor, not even close those cars are 5 years behind on every aspect except Mercedes is a little more comfortable.
Another great review, Thomas. I went from a '19 Model S to a '21 Model Y Long Range. I love both vehicles but I wish Tesla offered air suspension for the 3/Y. Supposedly they have just softened the standard suspension with what they call "Comfort" and I will have to try that. But I could easily be tempted to go for a new S (not Plaid), I need to try that too. For all the amazing engineering talent Tesla has, I am somewhat disappointed that they didn't reengineer the floor battery to create deeper foot wells for rear seat passengers. I believe that Lucid does do that for their Air model. That would really increase rear seat comfort (wouldn't that be a "must have" for the Chinese market?)
@@Avto28 If you go twice as fast you get 4 times more drag so a quarter of the range. That's worst case because some of the loss is from wheel friction and it's not affected by speed.
Lets say you accelerate for 100 meters 20 times. You have driven 2kms while accelerating with maximum power. Let’s say you use 4 times more power when accelerating than cruising. You will have driven 8 kms off of the 652 expected range, or 1.2% off of the battery.

@@richardcomerford1828 Unless you already know about the buttons, you may never find unless the screen freezes. Then, the buttons will light up.
With great power comes great responsibility!
Germany still has a lower traffic fatality rate than the US...
Glad you have Autobahn! 💥The screen tilting towards the driver is one of the best features in modern cars because most of us drive our cars with screen being basically turned away from the driver at a neutral angle towards the middle of the vehicle, which is completely wrong I think. BMW and now Tesla approach to screen tilt is much better 😎 By the way, I love that engine roar during acceleration is missing, because you will now be surrounded by REAL acceleration noise, such as wind speed, tire sound, wind noise and etc
you can still somehow get V8 sound which pumps through speakers inside and outside
Finally! Fantastic review.
Good to see your female companion back in a video acting as a visual/audio acceleration/G force meter for us viewers :D
Thanks!!
Tesla website says Model S 0-60 is 3.1 seconds. I thought the C8 does it in 2.8 seconds?
@@TheAeroegg I'm saying that when I floor the go pedal in either car, my body says the S is faster. I've done 2.8sec in my C8 and the S seems quite a bit faster. Would have to do some runs with both cars.
@@RobertMacCready That makes sense, the torque out of the electric motors is available right off the bat. I hope you get the opportunity to try out the acceleration in the Plaid, it leaves me stunned, but in a good way! 😲

Great review. I'm from UK and been looking for a refreshed model S review. Love your channel by the way. Enjoy your reviews.
great u re tuning in !
That woman's reaction was precious🙂
Apparently, they are testing that kit as being standard on the new Tesla Roadster due out... whenever! lol. Cheers
Tesla website now says the Carbon brakes are $20k. Also says available in early 2023, so should be soon.
@@G_man_ Tesla would be much more efficient at the same speed.
@@RemoteSpeed007 No, most likely not, NextMove already did tests like this with Model S...not plaid...and Taycan. The Taycan has almost same Efficiency like the Model S, since it is optimized for higher german speed. Nice review Thomas. Great how you matched your clothes with the car again.
Whenever I see that yoke steering wheel, I see a friendly Kuala Bear face!
The rear screen is still the old one, current Model S (in the US) comes with a bigger screen size, great review! I got nervous just by watching you accelerating🫣
We are now getting to the point where acceleration can be taken as a solved problem. There's not much left that can be done for passenger cars.
congrats on the great review!
You have been very peculiar in information.
I have a question, maybe I missed the information in the video, did the car come with winter tires already?
Thank you in advance for your kind reply.
Mine should be delivered in a few days! 😜
No. If you opt for the 21’s, you will have to buy your own winter tires.
I’ve ordered the Long Range as I think it’s fast enough.
honestly? i think i may do the same. i feel like the Plaid might get me arrested
Enjoyable review. Felt like I sat in, reviewed tech, and took it for a drive. Complements.
Ah I wish I would have that amount of money. The car is amazing and now finally with a ccs charging port. Thanks for the review
(There is a video on my channel showing 178 mph.)
The car reached that speed in a half-mile, and there was definitely more power available. On the Autobahn, in Track Mode, you should be able to easily surpass that. Let me know if you do!
Be safe.
Well, done Thomas! The acceleration of this car is just next level.
Was hoping to see a standing start acceleration test 0-100 but it wasn’t in the video. 😢😢😢

Imagine going around a parking lot maneuvering, and accidentally you press harder the accelerator pedal.
all tesla have that feature and I am very happy for it. it can only do acceleration when nothing is in front you etc
Why only EV’s?
If you do that, it just means you don’t know how to drive a car…
Teslas have by default enabled "obstacle aware acceleration" They are aware of that.

New suspension is better- controls bumps better but you can easily solve most of the issues w a better tire (don’t worry about the foam nonsense)z
@Donovan Lewis certain roads increase the hum noise but definitely worth the ride quality improvement and durability
I love the review
Germans are some of the most honest people in the planet.
How much battery does it drain when your do some of those hyper car acceleration runs at higher speeds?
You don't lose range from the acceleration as long as you don't use the brakes. You lose range from drag at higher speeds.
@@johntheux9238 And my question was exactly about high speed acceleration runs such as these.
@@Avto28 If you go twice as fast you get 4 times more drag so a quarter of the range. That's worst case because some of the loss is from wheel friction and it's not affected by speed.
@@johntheux9238 I'm not really interested in how one would go about calculating the theoretical figure, more like a real world average if available.
Lets say you accelerate for 100 meters 20 times. You have driven 2kms while accelerating with maximum power. Let’s say you use 4 times more power when accelerating than cruising. You will have driven 8 kms off of the 652 expected range, or 1.2% off of the battery.
