  • finally got this "little " hot bowl engine home after many years of negotiations. The rusty photos are the rust in the bore.
    I will upload more as i get a bit of progress . 8 1/4 " bore.

Nice, didn't look that bad after all. After a good clean the bore sure will be ok. Those engines that i have the bore have been in simular condition. Mostly a lot of carbon and sot. Can be a real pain to get the rings out in one piece... i remember on my 25hp 2stroke Målilla i worked for hours to get the last ring free without braking it. Then i just hammered it to pieces and made new ones instead. The bore was 265mm in that engine. Made in 1926.
How big bore do you have in that one?
Thanks for a good video once again. /Richard.

Hi mate. Yeah , that bore will be OK with some work. It took a lot of heat and effort to move the piston only 1 mm. It is always better to move the piston inwards first so the bore can be cleaned up near the head where it is the least diameter and rustiest.
This little baby McDonald has a 8 1/4 inch bore ( 210 mm) so not really small. I am missing the injector so will make one but everything else is there. These pistons have bronze bushes in the piston for gudgeon pin and they are very worn so i will make those also.

@@jenkodiesel5768 Okey. I hope you make videos aboute making the injector and the rest also. Very intresting. How does the injector work? On the Swedish hot bulbs, the injector is very simular to a spray-nozzle of a diesel burner. No opening pressure, just a little spiral-formed way for the fuel and a around 1mm hole in the nozzle and a check valve. Very simple.

@@YesterdaysMachinery Hi Richard , these injectors are exactly the same ! In fact McDonald were agents for Advance tractors way back in time so they copied alot of ideas from those engines. They were 2 cylinder ,hot bowl engines. You would know more than me about them .

Mate is that in recoverable condition.? I ask because I have inherited one that come off an old sawmill in the Dandenong and it is in bad shape and incomplete - are there parts around for these engines. .

    • @jenkodiesel5768

Everything is recoverable mate .If something seems too far gone then i just focus on one little part or assembly at a time. Then eventually you have most things fixed and i get into a sort of frenzy to get it going.
Parts are hard to find . What is it missing?

@@jenkodiesel5768 mate the bit of one I have seems to be missing the actual head/hot bulb bit - It’s been sitting outside a long time, I bought the property two year ago and there numerous stationary engines and saw milling gear on it . I’ll have a better look at it - it’s a long long long term intention to restore it .
