  • This engine was given to me by Don Ashwell on his last days before dying. He knew i wanted it so made sure i got it.
These weird engines were clamped on windmill pumps when the wind didnt blow. It was said that you could pull them apart with just a pair of fencing pliers.

Sorry to hear of your friend's passing....
I am sure he was pleased that you have carried on his traditions re these old engines......
When under a semi-constant load (attached and pumping) was the firing more hit and less miss?
Is the only cooling by convection off those large cast iron fins on the cylinder (no provision for a splash of water from the pump's output?)
What lubrication frequency on the valve stems and rockers?
I take it that the smoke is a result of a very worn out engine?

Thanks John , you are correct about more hits when under load. The cooling is quite interesting because on the miss strokes the engine sucks air in and out , in and out of the top exhaust pipe which cools the cylinder. The valves probably get a squirt or oil once a year if they are lucky. It is smoking because i left the drip oiler on the day before. all other Lubrication is from grease cups.

Thanks for your reply...that air cooling on the miss strokes is fascinating...
What part of the engine does the drip oiler lubricate?
Is it the main con rod end and main bearings?
Is the excess then accumulated in the sump?
Could you show these points on a supplementary vid?

@@JohnSmith-pl2bk yeah John, I’ll do another video on the Lubrication of this engine. Good idea
