“Actor are elevated above their true value to society” Thank you Dr Grande, you have coined a phrase that perfectly describes something many of us have thought but couldn’t described. For those of us who value art, the great majority of them are not artist and the project they are involved in, are mostly trash.

I totally agree that actors, Hollywood, and professional athletes, all of whom I categorize as pure entertainers, are unfortunately elevated in our society to much more value that the more important members of society like teachers, first responders, public electricians, trash collectors, and everyone else we really need as a society to function. I equate actors and similar as the equivalent of the court jesters from the middle ages who were only there to entertain rich people and royalty, but totally unnecessary to society otherwise.

My ex was in the film industry and sadly it seems that abuse of crew members by directors and actors is widespread, and perhaps worst of all largely accepted by crew. Getting a nice director who treats his crew respectfully and keeps any abusive actors in check is considered to be extremely lucky.

Every job has the same type of boss, no different. This is not unique Hollywood or even a job at McDonalds, bosses all around the world behave this way, if you are very lucky you get a "good" boss, but I rarely have had a rational decent boss, most are egotistical and feel it essential to yell and humiliate their employees. So I cannot stand for anyone in Hollywood believing they are unique, you just get more attention because your bosses are rich and famous.

He came across as totally self absorbed, almost to a point where he couldn’t listen to anyone else and wouldn’t let anyone get a word in edgewise as it was all “I’ve done that, I do this, me, me, me!” He seemed very irritating but I almost found it comical that he clearly lacks any self awareness! The problem is, as Grande alluded to, people like Cruise are in a position of power and authority and can pretty much say what they want, when they want, and how they want ("another Tuesday" as you suggested). First wife introduced him to Scientology (only 24 or 25 ys old). Scientology gave him tools manage his dislexia, learn to read & foster his sense of self. He really needed help; so perfect "candidate" to be sucked in by Scientoloy. Little lost boy functionally illiterate, desparate for belongng & lack of self-esteem.

But I think his death defying stunts are a continuing effort to prove something to himself. Still needs to feel good about himself & powerful. Stunts feed it & gotta be more & more extreme to feed his ego/phyc issues. Will get worse as he ages. I wonder if he wants the stunts to kill him? To "go out in a blaze of glory" to be "remembered forever?"
Witness to this kind of trauma & acting out in teenage boys as a HS teacher. 😔

His movies are big on special effects and he's lauded for performing his own stunts, which is really about athleticism and ego (another overrated "profession") not acting ability. Of the few movies of his I've sat all the way through, he's always the same character--intense and overly cool. Just comes off corny and flat.

In interviews, Tom Cruise has said that he suffered bc his father was a bully. What a deep irony that he is now the one whose behaviour seems bullying. A potently transformational counselling skill is a tool called “developing discrepancy”. It’s essentially noticing that people are not living lives with alignment. The thoughts and emotions and behaviours do not align (‘line up’). I feel particular empathy for his young daughter. It’s tragic when a child is rejected by their parent. And through no fault of her own.

I very much doubt that this was the only incident of its kind and Cruise's reaction bespeaks long-standing frustration with people's carelessness - and let's face it, a film set is an extremely complicated environment and definitely not conducive to observing covid guidelines, so infractions are guaranteed to occur constantly even with the best will in the world. I can easily imagine that this incident was the straw that broke the camel's back and Cruise just lost it, being under enormous pressure. I don't see anything out of order in it myself.

His “being elevated beyond his true value” is a valid understatement.
I would credit the Church of Scientology for making him truly believe that he was superior to everyone around him, superior in knowledge first of all, then superior in every imaginable, measurable way after that, such as ability, intellect, the management of personal affairs, what have you…
In fact, a sort of citadel was built especially for Tom, to celebrate Tom as a Scientologist. It was called “The Celebrity Center”, but you might as have called it something like “The Tom Cruise Adoration Hall”.
All that was done to promote the church, to brag about how their successful Hollywood star was a Scientologist, (and so, “why not you? Join us and be successful, too, just like Tom.”)
Tom Cruise became the most important church member, indeed, second only to the leader himself.
(A man whose name I would rather forget.)
He was catered to in every way. They remodeled his house, for instance, for free. All that mattered to them was that Tom the star was getting in front of cameras to say all these wonderful things about their “wonderful” church…
There is not doubt that Tom believes in what he says about his religion…Thing is, he never really speaks to it directly. I believe it is a sub-conscious, knee-jerk reaction that keeps him silent, thinking to himself that he is protecting his privacy and his precious church that treats him so very well…
Naturally, the psychological result is what we see, and have seen since he got up on Oprah Winfrey’s couch, on that, earlier tirade…(do you recall?) -The result is that now we are dealing with a true narcissist, full blown, and long rewarded for his grandiose considerations of himself.
I’m not at all comfortable about referring to the organization as any sort of religious outfit, btw.
They have been revealed as being, possibly, the greatest con job ever to exist.
I would describe the organization has having three principle traits. One, they are predatory and target the vulnerable. Two, they are profit-oriented. And lastly, that they are not at all what they profess to be, which is to say that they are THE answer to everything, (mental health, criminal behavior, consciousness, the evolution of mankind, et cetera, et cetera…)
    L. Ron Hubbard should go down in history as the great hypnotist; I would hold up is book, “Dianetics - The Modern Science of Mental Health” as the great hypnotic tool, possibly the greatest. You could hold it up as the most valuable handbook for cult leaders, ever written. Yes, by golly, that Hubbard was quite the genius.
Yes, I got sucked into it, as a 17-year old runaway in the year 1973, thereabouts. I escaped some two years after that, an accomplishment I do brag about to this day… My last word on this loveless, pseudo-church:
They will go down in history as having Tom Cruise as their greatest prize.
You can bet your bottom dollar, that he doesn’t want to talk about it.

How many people still hold Fauci's opinion above all others? How many people did the same of Trump? In America, we're free to remove ourselves from the presence of bad company. Life is a play, all the world is a stage, and acting is about how we choose to behave. Tom lost his temper temporary while displaying his own ignorance, but he didn't kill anybody. L Ron Hubbard has regular outbursts like this and it became a typical way for Scientologist to interact with each other, with people with higher status unleashing on their “inferiors.” Thus, this is learned behavior.

His original last name was Mappother and he had a little brother. He also had chipped teeth from playing hockey. Hockey is not an easy game to play so he must have good coordination. To fight on skates you need a reasonably good understanding how to skate. I don't think he plays anymore.

As much as I try to separate the art from the artist, there are a few instances where what I know about someone is simply too much and I can't do it. Tom Cruise is one of those. He has the most overinflated sense of self importance that I have ever seen, with the possible exception of Donald Trump. He has the self awareness if a deflated basketball. He has the insight and intelligence of used cat litter. Fortunately I don't think he is much if an actor, so I not missing much by having chosen to avoid his "work". (Anyone who would appear in a film like Cocktail should be shot on general principles!!) Now let me tell you what I really think! : )

I remember when I was a young girl, all my school friends raved about him. I saw Top Gun on TV and watched a while to see what the fuss was about. He gave me the creeps so much that I couldn't finish watching the film. I have always found him to have a falsely charming personality, the kind that is constructed and paraded with specific intention, but the look in his eye was always manic and dangerous. He's physically good-looking but I find his personality so abhorrent that I can't stand looking at him on screen when he appears as himself, he still makes my skin crawl.

To me there is, and always has been, something dangerously narcissistic and rageful behind that surface charm. I think he is authoritarian and rigid in personality, as all 'true believer types' are. He lacks tolerance for anyone who disagrees with him and seems as though he's teetering on the edge of a mental breakdown. Like he's just hanging on. That religious zeal he exudes makes me cringe. I also can't watch his movies anymore. He's got to be the controlling one all the time. Of course I don't know him, but I've heard all his interviews and I believe him to be a toxic individual.

We live in a society where the acting profession is seen as the pinnacle of success. Acting is the art of pretending to be something you are not and to be everything embodied within a script.
This society is telling us subconsciously, that to be successful, we also need to be blank automatons that gain our meaning from a script e.g. the various media, from people of "importance" and others with "authority". Normally that wouldn't be such an issue but these people aren't normally qualified to be giving orders. They act as a face to those actually in control.
On the other hand being educated in something in comparison has you placed quite a way down the social rung.
We can see Scientology takes advantage of this social norm in its own methodology.

Then perhaps reminding him that he is ONLY an actor who occasionally "pretends to be saving the world". Those who actually are trying to save the world are largely silent. Nobody knows who they are because they're too busy being heroes to find a bullhorn to assault us with that fact. I highly recommend that Cruz join the Catholic church. I don't like Cruise based on what I have seen about him as a human, based on this incident and many before. I do find him tolerable-to-good as an actor, but in his defense, slightly, I will point out that he does more than act in his films.
Cruise actively develops and produces his films, so he has more invested than just being an actor for hire. He has both authority and responsibility for the sets of his films, and he has made many choices of who to hire, in the first place. He should have handled this set situation much more calmly, and he totally stepped over the line into arrogant abuse, but he was mentally juggling a lot of personal, financial, and legal responsibility.

Ya know, ya just don't have context for that high and mighty tough guy routine. Did you rent a ship named after you during the pandemic so the rest of your coworkers could keep working? Do you know how many times the crew had already been reprimanded for doing this? How many times those two in particular had been told? What about how many close calls the crew had with almost being shut down? Maybe Cruise really did feel responsible for making sure everyone is still earning money instead of moving to Oakland's beautiful tent and pallet house city. Maybe the crew asked him to do this whenever they saw it because he had gravitas, and he was stressed about being substitute captain and remembering his lines.
Maybe you should sit down and identify the compulsion to fantasize about being the knight in shining armor that becomes the hero of the set because you were the only one capable of taking an icon down a notch.
