I don't think Dr. Grande sleeps. He just does research, change his shirts and churn out these videos at a rapid rate lol. I love that I have a hard time keeping up with all of these videos!

It's getting to the point where I hear "social media influencer" and my teeth automatically gnash together, and my eyes roll.
💯 These influencers for the most part are flash-in-the-Pan and if this considered a real career, I find that ridiculous. Dime a dozen, ditto these self-help BS artists. They are peddlers.

“Influencer” in my mind is on the level of “used car sales person.” Anyone in that line of work is either scamming (most crypto coins du jour IMO) or should take “influencer” as pejorative. “Free lance advertising agency” or “free lance brand ambassador” sounds so much more impressive … and honest.
And “social media” is rarely “media” and “social.”
This was the analysis I didn’t know I wanted. This sums up perfectly why I don’t give self-help gurus and books any of my attention or money. Thanks doc!

As someone who struggles with mental illness and doesn’t always have access to quality healthcare providers, I have been helped considerably by some books in this genre, BUT they were all written by doctors, therapists and medical researchers. Sadly, those books don’t hit the best sellers lists because the authors aren’t flashy pseudo-celebrities.
I'm a loser, but I just see "self help" stuff as being in service of Mammon. Everything is a grift.

I don’t think that’s fair. I never cared for Dave, but we really never know what someone is going through or what they’ve gone through. I think the people who bought into the Hollis’s nonsense should have done some due diligence.

When you have a good life, just keep doing whatever it is you are doing. I deleted Instagram 3 years ago and have zero presence on social media. Unless this is considered social media. Either way, this has nowhere near an effect on me like my Instagram presence did. Eliminating social media will free you from the foibles associated with it. You’ll sleep better. Your phone won’t be the focus of your life. I regret nothing since quitting.

I sent a screenshot of your comment to my sister, who’s become a very self-absorbed woman as a result of her obsession with her social media presence. It’s become her standard practice of embellish every story she posts, and then feed off of the response she gets, and from whom.
When I told her last night that her most recent post was not just embellished, but flat-out dishonest and should be deleted, she became extremely defensive and told me that I just don’t understand the ‘culture of social media.’ I miss the person she used to be, but as long as she’s addicted to herself via social media, I don’t think the person I used to know, is ever coming back.

i think the main reason for the criticism is not just that they got a divorce after being self-help gurus, but that they jointly had a marriage "counseling" podcast and seminars. easy to miss if you've not been following the machinations of self-help freaks for ages like i have. it's very frustrating that people who were born on third base think they can tell regular people how best to live their lives and then act completely shocked when they get the mildest pushback.

He appeared to be seeking happiness in the wrong areas. For many of us it's the little things that give us joy and help us feel content. I don't think he saw joy in the little things.

The only flaw you have is you care too much for others and don't reward yourself enough" You can fill a book with this just expressed in different ways in the various chapters and you have yourself a best seller.

I am so sorry for his kids, losing a parent is always hard. He was a young man, so sad he could not follow his own advice.
Especially as their mom Rachel has never seemed in my opinion in any way maternal even though she gave birth to 3 children and adopted another. The whole situation is very sad

The kid wanted a family, but has a self absorbed mom and dad who died in his own pain and insecurities. I feel terribly for these children. No amount of money can undo the damage.

Many might say, who cares, he won the lottery. But it seems he was a bit deeper than that. Sadly, he went looking for something he couldn’t find, and that final failure eventually killed him.
He felt that his job at Disney was not that hard, but that he earned a lot of money, which he felt that he didn't deserve 😕 - and for some reason, apparently, that didn't sit well with him. In comparison, many of us have/or had a job that is/was very hard, but unfortunately for us, we don't! /didn't earn a lot of money! I guess we are/were the fortunate ones!

Crazy right? I have never been one to follow trends or aspire to be like everyone else! I am amazed at what people will do to be like some random stranger who seems to be likable and therefore has a lot of subscribers! I somewhat understood the celebrity-fan constructive where fans will get haircut and buy shoes and clothes cause a sport star or tv star said to lol! But when people started paying $80-150 for Stanley mugs I was floored ! My wife who thank god does not follow social trends showed me the cup she wanted me to find cheap versions of so she could decorate them as Christmas gifts a couple years ago. Stanley who prior to the rise of the mug was sold mostly at Walmart and was like the cheaper option for tools and other stuff! Seriously who looks at some phony housewife and says she’s got it all if I buy everything she has all my problems will go away and I will achieve max happiness!

I just cannot imagine why anyone would want to be an influencer. It’s so vacuous, and the idea of being recognised in public, or being called out publicly just fills me with dread. I am very much an introvert and happy. I feel like people like these are the exact opposite of me and I struggle to understand their thoughts.
As someone that was a Rachel and Dave supporter since 2018 and later after the divorce opened my eyes to the reality of self help. All that to say that I know a lot about them based on what they posted online.

This is rather sad. The man had the epiphany about the vacuousness of social media influencers. This realization could have catapulted him into a measure of deeper wisdom.
This situation is an unfortunate consequence of putting his ego first.
It is very sad. He had insight and intelligence- he understood his high-paying job at Disney was something that more or less fell into his lap, saw it for what it was, and even admitted others worked harder and better than him. That’s rare. I think in many aspects he was not a bad person. I think whatever drove him to substance abuse, and the substance abuse itself, were very likely the cause of some of his concerning behavior. I don’t fault his wife, but I think the divorce was the beginning of the end for him. He was devastated- I think he truly loved Rachel and his family, and desperately wanted that back. Sadly, what likely ended his marriage also ended his life.
@@yesterdayitrained If I recall correctly, based on Rachel's books, he didn't really want her, talked badly about her to his friends, and just like his job, she more or less fell into his lap. I believe a lot of Rachel's followers thought he was an asshole because of that. It's as if this man never actually made his own decisions, or stood for anything.
@@Bianca_ToepsYes- I read her 1st book (without really knowing who she was). She made it seem like she had this revelation she was in a toxic relationship, ended it, and then Dave realized how great she was/he loved her. And she was the mature one to turn him around.
She said he was OK with everything she put in the book..but I wonder if he just said OK, but wasn’t really comfortable with it. The book does not reflect well on him.
This sad story confirms my cynicism about these "life coaches" or "influencers." Ditto for "support groups." Unfortunately I know so many who have ditched their jobs in pursuit of these airy-fairy professions.

I'm not diagnosing anyone. I'm only speculating about a situation like yours. Just my opinion. Now here's my analysis... It is enjoyable, in a world of BS, to hear an honest assessment of the BS world by someone high in conscientiousness and agreeableness, while low in neuroticism and narcissism. Grande's gift of gab is not grandiose nor gratuitous, but greatly garnering of gratitude for his gentle goodness and grace.
It's intelligent entertainment, and after working so hard, you deserve a little fun and intrigue!

The way Dr Grande tells these tales and rounds them out at the end, resembles Aesop’s Fables. 👏 brilliant and what a tragically sad, yet good story to tell…many lessons from pride to envy etc.
Blows my mind how, in this year of our Lord 2023/2024, so many adult humans are still looking for a guru. And we wonder how cults are still a thing. 🙄

Rachel's book of cliches came to my recommendation list so many times. I borrowed the book twice , but could not get past a few pages because it felt like it was written by somone who has never worked a minimum wage job a day in her life to survive. It read like a rich man's wife writing whatever stuff from her high horse that does not relate to real working class people. Don't understand how it was a huge hit!
Dr Grande nailed the self-help business model. There's gold to be mined in people's misery.
This is a pretty fascinating case actually. It seems representative of mental health issues and social media clashing together with unexpected consequences.

OMG. I didn’t know that he passed away. That’s so sad. I may not have liked the way he and Rachel advised on a wide manner of subjects without the proper credentials to speak on any of them (I thought they were full of 💩), but I have a lot of empathy for anyone struggling with addiction. I lost my sister to alcoholism two years ago this past Thanksgiving, and I have 15 years of recovery from prescription drug addiction.
I’m sending my prayers to his children. I hope they are getting the love and support that they need at this difficult time. 🙏🏼💜

I wish someone would arbitrarily select me to have a high-profile job. 9 years since grad school, I’ve still had no luck getting a job higher than entry-level, and even after that, my managers kept treating me like I had to prove myself (in an office support job!)

Ok, now. I remember hearing about this. I thought that they said it was a heart attack but implied something else happened. I didn't know it was fentanyl. Just a big old mess. He should have just left the guru lifestyle to his ex wife. Sad story though
I work at a financial firm that has some celebrity clients. Their death certificates don’t always match what is released publicly. Drug overdose can be embarrassing to their legacy and the family might still depend on revenue from book sales. One was a famous self help guru who died from a drug overdose - the appearance of having his life together was important for the sake of his books.
Yes- I heard heart attack, and of course, unkind rumors. But I didn’t realize anything else was later found.
it has been my understanding that drug dealers cut their heroin with fentanyl but it's not like they carefully weigh it out. So you don't know what strength you are getting, and fentanyl is VERY STRONG, so it kills people who think they are getting a manageable dose of the drug they have used before and gotten away with it. It's so sad to hear he died alone with his phone. Like Tony Hsieh dying in his garden shed, basically alone but for an employee hanging around the area.

I read this story in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend. It is remarkable and I was telling my hubby about it. Dr. Grande's take on this is the perfect complement!
They forgot the first rule, don't quit your day job.
Most people would be thrilled to have 10% of his wealth and it wasnt enough. This is a great lesson on taking something wonderful for granted and trashing it.
As usual, Dr Grande's combination of insight, balance of subtlety and sarcasm and his clever, dry wit is absolutely brilliant. I appreciate the way Dr. Grande offers his perspective and delivers his messages.
And somehow the rest of society happily survives in the obscurity of their normal, everyday beautiful little non-eventful lives. Sending heartfelt sympathies to the family and, if I could, to Dave himself.
I could tell Dave was doing coke before he died and it's so sad that his life ended the way it did. I didn't like him as a person but I feel so sad for his kids. Him joining the Hollis Co was the beginning of the end for him.

@@mikehoben7341 I watched the live stream Dr. Grande mentioned where he spent hours begging people to buy his book and ignoring his daughter. It was really his behavior in that particular live stream that convinced me. Just the way he was talking and acting. It's a little hard to articulate but it reminded me of the coked up line cooks I used to work with. After that I started noticing it more from him, and Heidi.

It seems like they dont have genuine, authentic depth. They can read, learn and teach it, but they dont have it. Maybe more life lessons would help them reach that. Who knows.
@@Jess-kn8vlTrue. Always easy to tell others, harder to live it. I meant more on the power couple saying that I see on crime sites often. Every power couple ends in tragedy, doesn't last or has major problems.
The inherent problem with “power couples” is that they don’t necessarily want to share power. When both have huge egos, they tend to also compete with each other for dominance. Case in point, the wife called her business venture 3% to mock her husband’s doubts about its potential for success.

Anyone claiming to be any kind of "life coach" or guru should be highly suspect. They are often/always the last people who should be attempting to guide other's lives.

Him and rachel had had huge seminars about "how to have a successful marriage" literally about the time they were planning to announce their divorce. Such b.s.
I followed this family very closely after his wife’s epic downfall, so many dynamics at work and honestly could be a 15 hour deep dive with the amount of stuff that happened!
What was her downfall?
@@NetSunJin she made a series of unwise and unethical decisions that all sort of blew up at once, then she insulted a fan and her house cleaner during a live. Then she got caught plagiarizing yet again and blamed it on her “team”, doubled down and offended even more people with her terrible “apology” for the plagiarism (she plagiarized Maya Angelou, people were pissed). It’s all a bit muddled but take my word for it she’s a self absorbed fake shallow person..
I'm sure that there are many people who would have traded places with Dave career-wise while he was an executive at Disney. He just whined about feeling unfulfilled. Please.

There have been times where I’ve felt like I had things together and could give advice and times where I’ve been convinced of my utter lack of understanding of the world. What is easy to implement when you’re on an upswing becomes a bitter pill to swallow when things are falling apart.
Poor Dave Hollis; his example proves that satisfaction and success don't depend on wealth and fame. He literally had everything but he still wasn't happy (even if he felt his professional life was devoid of meaning, he was a father; so many parents work so hard to provide for their kids and he didn't have to). Thanks, as always, Dr. Grande.

Brilliant analysis again.I am quite fed up with these self help gurus especially in areas of " manifestation ".Many of them are so convincing especially when giving talks.Unfortunatey a lot of the public are gullible and that these "guru's" are simply business people earning good money.
This is incredibly sad; there are so many people dealing with the same issue.
I'm always skeptical of so called self help guru's. They give me phony scam like vibes. They tend to hypocritical , off putting and without real substance. One doesn't need another to tell them how to be.

Success that feeds our inner demons almost always results in disaster.
These are the images of America that I so despise, the ones which broadcast that people who have tons of money, impressive titles, fluorescent white teeth, a gigantic house and a designer wardrobe are who we should want to be. The truth is, a great many of them are not especially talented. As long as they have a cheering audience, they will recite their psychobabble with great ease, just like a trained seal. While they're drowning in their inadequacies, the drugs and alcohol help them through another terrifying day. This image is what they tell Americans they should strive for -- the money, the fake amazing marriage, fake everything, while they're smiling and living their lives of quiet desperation. I prefer to be unknown, regular, and well adjusted.

Very sad story.
I admit that I did not admire either him or his wife, but what a shame to die like that.
Never thought I'd pity a wealthy executive, but I'll give him credit for being self-aware enough to know how phony these powerful positions typically are. Dave had it all and could do or be pretty much anything he wanted yet he chooses to hop from one sham to even bigger one. A social media influencer, a poor choice to say the least if looking for personal fulfillment.

D. Grande provides digestible listening; one can do other things at the same time while comprehending the info. Using a (sorely needed) traditional 1900's slower pace of speech, a calm tone and few, but concise words he communicates facts w just a few dry humor flourishes, and ends with inciteful psychological summaries. He deserves his success.
Wow! A Netflix mini-series based on this couple could be brutal! Of course, the ex-wife would object to it being made unless she had control over the narrative.

Excellent analysis. It is sad how Dave's life ended. He should have stayed at Disney. As my GrandDad said, " Fame isn't what it is cracked up to be!" Same applies as a social media influencer.

Whatever happened with Rachel and Dave I’m heartbroken for their kids, it’s hard to imagine what they feel and I hope they can find peace
I knew Dave 30 plus years. An incredibly kind, intelligent individual. The whole situation is tragic. There are significantly more factors involved than were depicted here. Rest In Peace my good friend.

Hi, Dr. Grande. Keep up doing the good work with your videos and love your humor. You should do more videos where you conlude with lessons we can learn from this case you present. And as for this case, sometimes it is like a caution for us about so-called self-help gurus because not all of them are factual in their sayings.
Also I would like to recommend to do a case on Lou Pearlman , because I felt everyone deserves to know the case, in which at least for me reminds me of be careful of someone who to trust. I would like to know your take on that analysis. Thank you
