I'd deffinetly put new separate unconnected oil grooves in with individual oil nipples or cups. That way it adds fun oiling your machine and you know the oil is reaching its destination. Great work so far Tom.

Thanks for the Shout-Out Tom. I would not extend those oil grooves too much, because they have to stay sealed at each end or all the oil will run out when table is at full travel. I am just thinking of how engine bearings have feed grooves in the middle. If they went to the edge they wouldn't hold any oil pressure to create a cushion of film of lube to stop wear. Just run the bed to both ends while oiling machine to get full coverage.

I love the way this project is evolving. You are going to have a really nice machine in the end, if the wear isn't too bad. If it is, we might get to see a whole bunch of scraping videos.

Hi Tom, I think I'd leave those oil grooves as is. They likely stopped them short, so that they stay covered up when the table is at the ends of its travel. Otherwise the oil grooves could be exposed, and let the oil dump out.

Do NOT extend the oil grooves out. When the table moves to the extremes on the saddle, you do not want to expose the oil grooves, or they will empty all their oil. Install a Bijur system. ----Doozer

Tom, I would definitely extend the oil grooves. It’s fairly easy to do with a die grinder. I would also try my hand it’s scraping on the worn parts, anything to help hold oil between those surfaces would really be beneficial. I have a number 25 Giddings and Lewis with the rotary table. Your cleanup and repaint is getting me excited about doing the same on the Giddings and Lewis, I bought it a couple years ago, parked it in the back of the shop and have kind of forgotten about it. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to make a video about it.

Hi Tom. I think putting in new oil grooves is a good idea, but possibly a bit late, considering the evident wear shown by where the scraping marks are still visible. I think a re-grind on all the ways (although costly) would be worth it in the long run. Interesting item that light. 101 years old! Give Kaos a pat for me.

You touched my heart when I saw you using the brass hammer. I am a Hammer Snob. I cringe when I see someone using a hard face hammer on machine surfaces. And claw hammers have no place in a machine shop. Our dogs love going to the shop with us. Snuggles gets really excited when I say the magic words. "Want to go to the Shop?" Great video series on the boring mill. I will surely be here to the end of the restoration and beyond. Here is a little clip of Snuggles protecting me from the Ladder. LOL
