That's a good idea for testing out the quality of different paints. Priced out an OEM metallic to respray my old BMW and at 600+ gallon it gets very tempting to find a cheaper paint.
Hey Trigger, very good advice. I painted a horse trailer with Omni metallic. Horrible outcome. My supply store recommended the Omni plus. It was a little better , but not by much... The horse didn't even like it.
Hey Trigger I love your work ethics Brotha! You're video's are mesmerizing. As far as Omni it used to be really bad like you you were saying, But I recently sprayed metalic and solid white and black, its not bad like before. Solid advice as ever trigger. It take years for painters to develop their technique. I was recently asked to use some cheaper clear on a commercial vehicle. I added my usual reducer and it hit the floor. I later added just 5% less reducer and it WOULD NOT flow out. I later found out my boss had purchased 5 x 5 gallon kits on the cheap. On top of all that it was responsible for turning whites and silvers a yellower shade. It has been a nightmare.☠💀👻💩 Like you say, "Poor material create work". Great work with the channel.👋 Spray on brother 🤜🤛
One place I worked back in the day used ppg.. another used dupont.. my favorite was the ppg.. it just laid down nice and covered beautiful. If I remember correctly Sherwin williams had a decent paint pretty cheap.. I remember the clear was hard as a rock to cut and buff
Sherwin had good paint back in the day the solvent didn't match that great but the paint itself was great. And if I remember correctly the clear was hard as a rock like you said 🤦🏼♂️
Nice work. I understand the cheap paint issues. Metallics, not all but especially the cheap metallics are somewhat transparent and don’t cover well in one or two coats. I have sprayed a lot of cheap paint over the years. Sometimes the metallic paints were so cheap I had to spray a silver pre-base coat or a pre-color coat before the metallic base coat. The paint was so cheap I don’t know if six coats would cover without seeing through the paint. You are correct, there are good reasonably priced quality paints out there that lay out and cover well that would aid big time for a beginner. Most beginners buy the cheapest paint they can find thinking they actually should (incase the paint job turns out bad, they didn’t invest a lot in it). They have no idea that they about guaranteed themselves the paint job would turn in to a disaster. They then live with the crappy paint job or they have to sand their lives away and shoot the car again. There is a utuber that sprayed I think it was a Plymouth Satellite three times and it came out terrible all three times. He gave up and drives it that way blaming himself when he didn’t change up anything and pretty much never learned anything. Some things he did correctly and some things he did made me cringe, so besides spraying unknown paint he didn’t know how to set up his gun or how to keep a wet edge and it is unknown what quality of gun he was spraying with. I have had my own personal paint disasters over the years and after shooting hundreds of them I try and use what I am sure will work out. Even then, even when I am sure the shoot went about perfect, I still have a bit of anxiety until that paint cures and looks great like it should.
When I painted my old classic I wanted to paint it the original color but the paint store here had a gallon and a half of Ditzler in a Rootbeer Metalic that that the customer didn't want and I picked it up for $200 for all of it
got a 2001 GS love to see work on GS's... good stuff bruh I'm in the 305 n might need some spots touched up clear coat wise.. maybe we can collab... peace
As soon as you said Nason I knew. Haha! I used that 20 years ago. Never covered. The clear is really bad too. Omni is still around. That's what I spray still, Omni Plus version is what I use. That covers really well.
I wouldn't go that far on Nason clear. 498 is pretty good stuff for a beginner. You can hammer it on (less worry about gun setup) and it doesn't run so easily.
Killing it as always Trigg! It’s such a blessing to spray the same products every day, takes the guessing out of it. BUT being able to make any product work and get great results is what a great painter does 👌
And like you say, You are still paying regardless of how cheap the paint is, People don't think about the hours spent trying to achieve the same results after buying the cheapest product, In my opinion it's all about what value you put on your time.
Once again Laying it down! Thanks brother. I be looking forward to your videos. Love the experience and knowledge you give us all. Keep them coming!!!!
I recently bought some cheap single stage and man it laid down like shit.... hard part was finding a paint to match what i was doing but in the end it wasn't worth it..
What's a decent site and brand for the beginner? What I consider to be middle is what the pros consider to be cheap. I'm not trying to win no car shows but have a decent paint. Feedback is much appreciated! 🙏🏻
Sorry man I have no idea about websites to purchase paint from. I just hear a lot of guys in the comment say that they purchase it online but I personally have never bought paint online I've always gone into a auto body supply store. I'm sure there are some good ones out there but unfortunately I have no knowledge on that sorry I couldn't be more help. Anyone else is reading this and you know of good websites for this gentleman to purchase paint please comment with a few sites that could help him out Thank you in advance guys Trigger❤️
For the price and quality of the gun the ANI black would be a great buy in my opinion. I painted a black GMC pick-up truck with that gun last month the video is up. Here is a link cheapest I've seen it and legit company. www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/product/ani-skull-spray-gun-digital-nondigital/
I sprayed some silver metallic (Chrysler color) on an overall paint job for my C/k 1500 about 15 years ago and it was a gotdamn nightmare. The metallic wouldn’t lay for shit and it took forever to get the stripes out. I ended up doing drop coats in both directions and stayed back damn near 12”. It took like 6 coats to cover good.
A couple people here stated about using Omni. I've been using Omni for a couple years. It's not bad. Overall I've been successful with it. Currently, doing paintwork on a 97 Buick that is Jasper Green. Recently when I bought some Omni in the Jasper Green my paint supply person stated that the Jasper Green Omni may come out cloudy. He mentioned that some colors do it. He stated that the same color in the Omni Plus would not have the cloudiness. He mentioned that after the base is laid down , let it sit , then do a wipe test with the pre cleano. If there is cloudiness then you need to use the Omni Plus. I took a chance and when I did lay the base down I did the wipe test and there was no cloudiness. Laid the clear down and there was no cloudiness. The base and clear topcoat came out pretty good. So this color doesn't get cloudy. Trigger Man, what would be a better paint to move up to?
There have been some cheaper base coats that have really let me down and some that haven't on my metallic and effect colors I typically use better quality now
I always had a question about that using the adhesion promoter over primer. Shouldn't it make more sense to put it on the plastic directly, I guess my question is if there's primer. I guess my question is wouldn't adhesion, promoter on top of primer be a waste?
Not necessarily a waste. In this case I was using a product that is adhesion promoter and a gray sealer. So it's a two in one product. Adhesion promoter is not just for plastic it makes paint stick period. Whether it be plastic, Chrome, glass, fiberglass etc.
Trigger you hit the nail on the head. Trying to achieve "Pro" results with "baseline" or "economy" products almost always ends in lower quality results. (Doesn't just apply to paint either) "Mid grade" really is the right way to achieve a QUALITY "economy" job.
@@thetriggerman954 Appreciate new incite. My shop is next door to a custom spray shop that does $20K + paint jobs. I get lots of neighbor advise but I cant afford the paint they use. Would love to know of a good paint around $800 complete kit for a small car? (if it even exists) lol

Good job. But yeah the Apline Silver doesn't hit like Millennium Metallic Silver ( paint code 1CO ) which has a bronze tint to it in the sunlight on 2000-2005 model GS300
Great video and great advice man, in the middle is good don't have to be most expensive or same manufacture ,I've never once in 33 years seen a paint warranty claim, most of the time if something happens it just gets reworked , no time for the paint rep to come have a look and then say its not covered Great job mate its hard work when the products your using are not good, but an experienced man like you can make any paint look good 👍👍👍 Have a blessed one 🙏
Right on my man. I've only seen warranty jobs from a bad batch of clear, and was from spies clear in 2007 we had about 10 jobs that they warrantied and had to repaint. But that was a bad batch of clear was sent out. Only time I've ever seen it. And you're right we can make anything look good even if it's kicking our asses 😭😁
Experience my man. Once you have a solid substrate there is not much chance for a reaction. A good substrate and a clean surface you can pretty much do anything you want 😎🫡
My buddy and I used omni clear on a rat rod …. He was suprised how good it worked .. we cleared straight onto the roof which was bare metal …. Car was outside in delta bc Canada 🇨🇦 for two years … never flaked or anything …
I use Nason Ful-Base most often, and yea, it's not as good as, say, Chromabase. I do find it seems to lay better with Nason 441-22 and an LPH400 1.4 close to suggested inlet psi (16). Oddly, the jobber states it can still be mixed 1:1 vs. the TDS 2:1. I do 2:1 on the first coat, then 1:1 second coat, or drop coat mixed with extra binder to even out metallics. Surprisingly, I can get away with about a little over 2 quarts of raw base for coverage on a full respray, but that's just what works for me. Definitely not recommended for the beginner. I hear the XL line is much better but costs much more. Maybe I'll try it on my bike. You're spot on... another great video, bruh! 🫵🏿
Hmm maybe I'll tell my boss to order the XL next time. I've heard someone else say that it's better. This ful-base silver was a paint in the dick. I stayed cool for the video but I was cursing in my mask 🤣🤣🤣 thanks BossHawg 💪🏼
I sell the Axalta products and the Nason Ful Base is one of the cheaper paints they have. Chromax is the best, but a good happy medium is the Nason XL. It’s a higher solids 2:1 mix paint and covers great and has a broad color range. I have customers that like it as well as the old Chromabase. Price is just a touch more than Ful Base ($20-30 more in most case) and is way better.
Omni gave you issues? 1:1 mix I thought so you can cut it 2:1 ? I use shops that mix their own stuff and saved with great results 1:1 mix. Now I’m in Texas and trying out some small shops to see who is better suited for my jobs
Yea Omni wasn't that great back in 2001 -2003 Not necessarily issues with it but it was just cheap watered down, transparent. Still made it look good but like I said in the video I basically work myself twice as hard using that paint.
I remember my first paint job with omni paint red bruh the coverage sucks some spots was pink striping, just headaches after. Trigga brought the big toys today that Sata jet about to take off
I worked at a shitshow industrial painting facility (it was a front looking back) Where I watched a group of 4 guys dump 15+ coats of yellow on an already yellow massive crane. They kept seeing black underneath for no reason 😭. It was metacryl brand I think. I definitely appreciate all the work that comes my way because I hear things are going to slow down real bad soon. Hang on bro and stay up 🔝.

When I used to mix OMNI and PPG at oreillys the rep told us it was basically the same thing but when mixing omni it always has a ton less pigment and a whole bunch of colorless binder added. Guys that knew this at was not color matching would buy straight pigment. Especially if it was black because if not it would come out brown.

I'm not to familiar with ordering paints online or anything. Not sure what's your there to order. But I really like the Cromabase it's very affordable and sprays great. If you could locate a paint shop that ships it would be ideal for your situation.
If you are playing with cheaper metallic from say an online company that will remain unnamed, my best suggestion is use slow reducer so that your metallics have a chance to settle better. I am spraying my metallics out of the divelbiss pro lite with the 1.3 tip around 18.5psi and on my less expensive side jobs, not my shop jobs as we use Pro Spray, but my side jobs, I have great luck. Hey Trigger, what up man? I've sprayed Nason for over 18 yrs. It used to be an ok brand back in the day but I noticed that in the last 6, 7 years it's freakin reduced man!! hahaha, no reducers needed (just kidding.) The place where I get my base that's basically there main seller especially now being so expensive. But about 3 years ago the sales guy got me into the new Nason XL, big difference as far as coverage goes. Way better than regular Nason for sure. Once in a while I would get a high end job where budget was no problem with the materials so I would go with Dupont which if I'm not mistaken it was bought by Axalta, not sure tho. Why I use Nason as much, I live in a small town where people just want there rides looking good not savagly good. So I have to work with the community as well. Got to go back to the lab man, thanks for the great video bro.
I'm gonna have to check with our supplier and see if they have the Nason XL so when the owner decides to go cheap again I'll tell him to order the XL thanks man and yes the base does already seem like it's reduced lol thought it was just me 🤣

That's exactly what I have found in Wanda paint by Akzonobile. Its priced good and is great. It is 2:1 though for the most part which I would prefer 1:1.5 or 1:1 but its pretty good. Sherwin had good paint back in the day the solvent didn't match that great but the paint itself was great. And if I remember correctly the clear was hard as a rock like you said 🤦🏼♂️
Both correct
Thank you for chiming in. That sucks about the TH-cam still driving the car and never learned anything 🥹
When I painted my old classic I wanted to paint it the original color but the paint store here had a gallon and a half of Ditzler in a Rootbeer Metalic that that the customer didn't want and I picked it up for $200 for all of it
You see 🙌🏼 lots of paint stores have that. You save tons and for good paint. Thanks for chiming in Tim 💪🏻😎

@@georgepetrillo7316 I would say chromabase would be a nice step up. And doesn't seem to be to expensive. I think it sprays awesome.

OK I understand I thought you're putting. I thought you were gonna put bulldog. Adhesion promoter over the gray primed plastic piece I get it

How do you double coat so fast without getting those wierd reactions ?where it wants to wrinkle sometimes

I use xl primers and there much better than nason or omni. Omni still sucks. The only omni primer I use is the epoxy primer.
Because it's just the ground coat. Everything else is exell.
Tthanks TM for another great video upload..... buy cheap buy twicee! often most cost effective to spend a bit more :)
You're welcome James. That's right man. Spend a few bucks more make life easier. Thank you for watching brother 💪🏻😎

But it is always much nice to use quality paints. They keep getting more expensive every year.

I ended up going with the Kapci products which are a middle of the road when it comes to price but the quality is there IMO👌 really nice finish on the Lexus Trigg but like you silver isn't my sort of colour even though my SLK is silver🤢🤮
Thanks brother and have a good weekend👏🙏👍John UK
Thank you for chiming in John. Appreciate you as always my man. That sucks you can't go into a supply store 😭
Have you heard of Karocle? I think its Korean. The base is 2 to 1 and its thick AF.
No I can't say I've heard of that. Man I'm hearing about all kinds of paint I've never heard of from you guys. Sounds like there are a ton of options our there.
Damn looks good!
Thank you sir 🫡
Yo trigger you kill me with the El Cheeto lol 😂
Cheap o
😅😎💪🏼
I am not a fan of 2:1 base coats. The 2:1 clear coat however are my favorite things to spray.
2:1 clear is the 💣💣💣💣
So what are your thoughts on Speedokote?
💩
@thetriggerman954 🤣🤣🤣 Ima try it on some spare panels just to find out for myself. I've heard good & bad things about it. What I like to do is take people's opinions about stuff into consideration and then try some for myself on junk panels & hoods to see for myself. But appreciate your honesty
@@eastcoastken 😂😂😂 I mean I haven't seen anyone really spray it and make it look like something that I'd like to stamp my name on. I mean just keeping it real. Not sure how much it costs I'm sure it could work for certain situations but for a real deal glassed out finish I haven't seen it yet. But do keep me posted I'm ok with being proven wrong. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
@thetriggerman954 I only know one guy who really swears by it and he's on TH-cam up in Pennsylvania 🤣🤣🤣
@@eastcoastken well if he's putting out some glass work then there is your answer but if it looks like 💩💩 with runs and crap then there is your answer 🤷🏼♂️ blue pill or red pill 💊💊 😂
Absolutely its more work. Like i get that when your buying OEM paint for something like a GM factory white pearl tri coat that the paint mixed at your local supplier is $175 for a quart of white base and $275 for a quart of the pearl mid-coat but its a lot better match and better quality with much better coverage than the cheap stuff you see on ebay that cost $120 total for both a quart of base and quart of mid coat. Made those mistakes a long long time ago being cheap when i first started and it cost me more in the long run having to do it all over again with the quality stuff. Ends up costing you the sanding disc, sand paper, plastic and tape and everything all over again as well as primer again and clear. I like Akzonobile wanda paint and Akzonobile sikkens now days.
Yea man have to find something in the middle that doesn't break the bank but something that also doesn't come back in a few months 😭
That's exactly what I have found in Wanda paint by Akzonobile. Its priced good and is great. It is 2:1 though for the most part which I would prefer 1:1.5 or 1:1 but its pretty good. Ofcourse Sikkens by Akzonobile is great but expensive. Glasurit is great but expensive. Ive used PPG Omni line and didnt like it, PPG Shopline and its "meh".
Omni and omni plus.
Nice job Dude
Thanks my man 💪🏼
Wow I was just about ready to ask you about Rust-Oleum clear over lacquer. Oops nevermind
😠😤🤬
Great video, Trigger, but I noticed you painted over the headlights marked clear😂
Yea I know man 🫠 luckily I remembered 🤣 things don't always go as planned lol
@@thetriggerman954 I know that's right
What up man! 1st! Lol. What do think about the hv30 aircap on the prolite for metallic? I thought i heard Trey talking it up a couple times. I heard thos dv1 are great for metallic
1st? Man you like 30th You need to schedule your refresh timer to refresh more often 😂😂 I actually have never used that cap I have the TE20 and the t110 I usually just use my TE20 for metallics. The DV1 is awesome It's definitely superior over the Pro-Lite.
@@thetriggerman954 🤠...I used the dv1 at a company I work for but for gloss white corrosion resistant topcoat! Now Imma be forced to buy another spraygun since you said it's superior to the tekna I got a couple months ago 😄🏌♂️
I use house of color I love it
Triggerman where can I find that twist-on attachment and cup for the gun or is that exclusive for a certain brand?
amzn.to/3wREGGv
then google the gun you have and type Dekups adapter behind it when you google it and it'll give you the adapter # for that particular gun .
@@thetriggerman954 Thanks brother (in my Trigger Troll voice) lol

Hey man like your work. I’ve sprayed a few cars with nason single stage and did ok. I want to do base coat clear coat what paint do you recommend I try? Thanks man
Thank you Denis. Any paint line is fine just go for the higher tier one. Or even the middle of the road. Hell even matrix is pretty cheap but it lays down nice. And that's the base coat I'm referring to.
@@thetriggerman954 thank you I’ll give it a try
Trigger man I'm about to get back into spraying after like 10 years and I used to do exactly wut u talked about in this video 😂😂using the cheapest paint / tape/ newspaper for masking 😂 and then I would be super frustrated when I couldn't get a decent outcome plus my spraying environment was terrible... this time around I will be trying better quality paints etc wuts some middle quality paint brands? I was gonna go with nason or Omni u said those were cheap / problematic wut about finish line? Or should I just take the hit & go with ppg ??

I used Cromabase on the car it was like $140 for a half a gallon and sprayed very nice. And looked great. I think it's an excellent option.
@@thetriggerman954 cromabase is DuPont right?
Hey Triggerman. Any paint stores you can recommend near Fort Lauderdale? Appreciate the video. I’ll be painting a silver BMW soon.
Not really man. There are probably 50 of them around. Google is your friend. Premier,Terrys, finish master, marks auto paint, color tech, just a few off my head
@@thetriggerman954 appreciate it, boss!
Where are you located?
Pompano Beach Florida
Bought some online single stage black,, what a bunch of horrible work I have to do now...
@@v1-vr-rotatev2-vy_vx31 man I hear that 😭
PPG omni actually turned me off PPG products for a long time....we used it in a shop about 20yrs ago for used dealer car's stuff was toilet water lol
@@bernienovak936 yeah I felt the same way, my job used PPG and at my warehouse side gig we used Omni it was horrible, but I knew PPG was good, and I had all of the certifications but that Omni was the worst. Until this very day it was still the worst paint I've ever sprayed.
Hey trigger, have you ever sprayed waterborne base? And what are you thoughts on the differences between solvent and water?
No I've never sprayed it. Thank God 😂 they were installing the fans at the dealership I worked at getting ready to change over back in 2011 but I left before they switched.
I use ppg envirobase waterborne have been for last 7yrs for collision work its amazing the color match is alot better than solvent but spraying solvent is my go to on overall paintjobs. Solvent is always gonna be number 1 in my book
@@joshuashattuck9267 you like it alot better than spraying solvent. But solvent will always be #1 in your book??? Hey man them paint fumes got you high? 🫠😂
Lol yep your right! I didnt finish i guess. Waterborne is great for collision painting but solvent rules that alittle better? Lol
@@joshuashattuck9267 🤪
I never had a issue with Nason 😳
Neither have I 🤷🏼♂️
Would that be matrix paint ,that didn't want to name🤣🤣
Omni hs or the normal omni clear is pretty good
Great video triggerman
Thank you John 😎 much appreciated my man
Trigger man, quick question. im sanding my foxbody and paint is red and under the red is black where in my sanding i got some black are some primer areas and red areas.fixed some small dents and got primer in areas, sanded down to 320,400, now 600. im using a single stage red paint, do i need to use sealer or would i be ok if i lay down 3-4 coats of the single stage
You should be fine spraying just the single stage, if you were spraying base I would have said to go ahead and seal it but single stage normally covers really good so you should be fine.
