We don't have S5 here in Longquan, so I am no expert in explaining good or bad. but from what I learn, it's really good in toughness.
50 HRC is off by a lot. Not only is it a very low hardness for cutting implements by modern standards, but according to the heat treatment diagram for AISI 5160 (a very common spring steel) the ideal point is 59 HRC where its toughness is also maxed out, so there's absolutely no reason to temper it lower than that. Yes, differential hardening, edge quenching, blue backing and stuff like that is pointless on 5160, not even for a hamon since it's extremely difficult to make it show even a faint hamon.
What are the drawbacks of a 5160 steel katana? Or is it a good all round steel for the purpose of cutting and durability?
@@theangrycanuck8331 Don't have any first hand experience with a katana but I'd say it's a pretty good all round steel. From my experience of 5160 knives I made (that I also heat treated by eye in the forge + cooking oil) they hold a pretty good edge. I cut a whole ~7 inch walnut in half and after a couple of strops, my knife could still shave hair. I'd guess it would hold up to tatami mats and water bottles for a pretty long time before resharpening if it's properly heat treated. And from what I've seen on Forged in Fire, some 5160 swords held up to some serious abuse. For drawbacks I'd say that 59 HRC is a bit low compared to other steels, so maybe 9260 or S5 are even better, but you probably won't notice the difference until you put it through its absolute limits. Also you won't have a hamon on it, but you shouldn't go for a hamon if you want maxed performance anyway.
Swords need to be quite a bit softer than knives to allow for deformation in a cut. Otherwise, you’re more likely to get stress fractures and eventually a blade failure.
Swords do need to be sharp, but because you have a huge lever, they don’t need to be shaving sharp.
All through hardened blades will never have the edge retention or hardness of a differentially hardened blade, but they do have superior toughness and flexibility.
Toughness and hardeness will always be at war with each other because in order to get one, you generally have to sacrifice some of the other.
That said, for my money, Cloudhammers S5 shock steel is where it's at. Good luck destroying a blade made out of that stuff.
It doesn't have the edge retention of say T10, but it's way more durable, and all you need is a leather strop to keep a good edge on your blade.
@@DarkRob316 Sure but what I'm saying is that with 5160 specifically, the point where its toughness is maxed out, hardness is close to max as well. You can get an extra little bit of hardness if you sacrifice a lot of the toughness. Might be worth it if you're making a thick center punch, but for a sword it's never the case.
Should I get a 9260 spring steel katana, a T10 steel, or a 1095 high carbon steel that’s clay tempered and folded ?? Very stuck right now ! Any advice would help! Looking for a battle ready katana, that’s durable and holds and edge !
You could not go wrong with T10 clay tempered.
S5 shock steel
In a perfect world I'd go for the Tamahagane, for authenticity I guess. I don't know about the other two steels here as such, but a modern blade steel would be better than Tamahagane in terms of consistency at least.
Having said that I have an edo period Katana here, I got it almost by accident, not knowing it was a real one. I'd love to get it restored, but that would be difficult where I am.
Go online and sort it ,the sword found y ,remember, ying yan action reaction, poz, neg,,y save it, it' saves yourself make it Yr own
If you know its authentic and from Edo period, and isnt in an irreversibly bad condition, its probably worth at least several grand, sight unseen, and the price goes up from there. Go find a competent appraiser who is well versed in japanese swords, and get a written valuation. Then get a second competent valuation to see if they jibe. Let THEM tell you what and how much restoration is appropriate and what it would cost. They might offer to sell it for a commission %, so that you dont have to lay out any money. If youre in japan, polishers are a lot easier to find.
If you have to mail/ship the piece, dont do so without getting copies of the appraisal, take plenty of pics of the contents of the crate, insure it, and THEN ship it with a return receipt, and make sure tge recipient gives you a receipt with the valuation listed too. Ive been an executor, so liquidation and accounting for same is not alien turf to me.

As for Mr. Swordier, I bear him no malice. I was simply being extremely blunt in my assessment of the vid in question. Case in point: the "shit or shineola" reference was intended to be a blunt but extremely clever (and apt) call out to the movie "The Jerk" where the main char was being given life advice, including (drum roll) APPRAISING things to distinguish between junk and non-junk. The reference apparently went overhead and caused offense (and an overt reference to actual sh1t, instead of my metaphorical one) and instead of garnering a polite OOOF (as if from an imaginary bokken strike) and maybe a hint of me culpa. Not everyone is able to handle blunt critcism with some measure of grace and aplomb, just like students of iaiado are often unable to handle a brisk impact with grace and stoicism, esp if it was the result of their leaving themselves open for said blow. Been there, done that, both given and (on occasion) received.
I find no enjoyment in having to explain myself. If you act like a boor or a dullard, you should expect to get treated as such. Anyway, ive yet to see anything interesting or informative here, so im out. Sheesh.
