It is extraordinary. Liszt has wonderfully successed to represent the Hell, the Purgatory and the Heaven. While listening, I felt the same thing like when I read Dante. Liszt is such a genius. There isn't any other word. Congratulations to Berman for playing as well as he did.
This is by far the most difficult and epic score of the years of pilgrimage. Dante was a favorite writer of the romantism and Liszt in particular. He will devote a whole symphony to him ! The multiple visions inspired by the Divine Comedy are packaged within a highly virtuoso and harmonically advanced scenery. The rendering of Lazar Berman, a specialist of Liszt, is outstanding.
For me this piece is far more difficult than Balakirev Islamey because it's 2 times longer than Islamey and you need a big stamina for playing it, and honestly, it was harder for me to read Dante than Islamey (But unfortunately I didn't play both in the end).
@@LM-oz2sc I fully agree with you. Playing this piece all along in the right tone is very difficult indeed. Virtuosity is everywhere moods are often changing, etc. Islamey is more a job for acrobats. I don't know if Liszt knew it. I think that he knew Balakirev.
@@gerardbegni2806 When you learn the sheet music of Islamey it's not that hard to make good acrobats. Same with Dante but this sonata is 2 times longer than Islamey and middle part of this piece (F sharp major) is ridiculously difficult.

There are masterworks in Liszt's albums, and especially in "Années de Pèlerinage", bur t also in other books, and even in "Etudes d'exécution transcendante". of course, the purpose is mainly virtuosity, but there are actual masterpieces such as "Paysage", "Mazeppa", "Harmonies du soir". It is quite clear that the top level work is the great sonata in H. Nevertheless, the virtuosity in some pieces is much more ornemental. I know that the comparison is not so good, but I would tend to write that the virtuosity in "la Campanella for "Etudes d'après Paganini" is closer than that of Islamey. Liszt was an immense virtuoso .and alo a very imaginative and progressist composer, and as such wrote great masterpieces. . But we must not forget that the piano was at that time the only vehicle for music, including operas, for which piano adaptations existed. Liszt decided to contribute to that literature and could not avoid including great virtuosity sections which in my opinion have no added value in such a case. For instance, in the Don Giovanni fantasy, the great idea is the order in which themes are presented, but not the virtuosity around them.

THIS is my favorite recording of the Dante sonata. Nobody comes close to Berman’s playing of 1:52-3:20. A truly terrifying depiction of Dante’s descent into hell!

The many sides of Dante are evident in this performance. Lazar's piano playing is incredible. Hands down one of the finest pieces ever heard.

NOt exactly. There are some featues that keep track of the sonata form, especially in the tonal plan. But it is not a strict sonata form.
