      @@seanfogarty5559 Although we'll never know what Liszt sounded like, there is no doubt that he was one of the great pianists of all time, if not the greatest. We know this because of comparisons with pianists that we do have recordings of.
      After attending one of Josef Hofmann's concerts in which he played the Chopin B minor Sonata, Sergei Rachmaninoff said "Not since Anton Rubinstein have I heard anything like this". Famously, Rachmaninoff subsequently dropped the sonata from his repertoire because he didn't think he could do it the same justice as Hofmann could. We therefore know that Rubinstein was at least the equal of his pupil, Hofmann. Further evidence of this is from Hofmann himself, when speaking to Abram Chasins: "I'm very sorry for you that you never heard my master. Why... I'm a child - all of us put together are infants - compared to his titanic force". In the 19th century, Anton Rubinstein was considered second only to Liszt himself.
      There are many anecdotes about Liszt's pianistic genius that give you an idea of what he might have been like. Numerous stories exist from famous Liszt pupils like Arthur Friedheim and Emil Von Sauer, who have themselves made a number of fantastic recordings.
      Two famous anecdotes of Liszt's incredible ability come from Edvard Grieg, who visited Liszt in his mid-20s. He showed Liszt his newly-composed violin sonata. The following was written by Grieg:
      "Now you must bear in mind, in the first place, that he had never seen nor heard the sonata, and in the second place that it was a sonata with a violin part, now above, now below, independent of the piano part. And what does Liszt do? He plays the whole thing, root and branch, violin and piano, nay more, for he played fuller, more broadly. The violin got its due right in the middle of the piano part. He was literally over the whole piano at once, without missing a note, and how he did play! With grandeur, beauty, genius, unique comprehension. I think I laughed - laughed like an idiot."
      An even more famous anecdote is of when Grieg showed Liszt his famous Piano Concerto in A minor. Liszt asked Grieg to play it, but he declined as he had not practised it (I suspect nerves played a part too). In response, Liszt sight-read the concerto, all the while commenting about it to Grieg and a small audience of other musicians present. After he finished it, he encouraged Grieg's abilities. Coming from Liszt himself, this had a profound impact on Grieg.
      If you're interested in finding out more, I recommend Alan Walker's three-part Liszt biography.

      @@tomcarterpianist Liszt definitely was the greatest pianist at the time, and the most revolutionary composer/pianist ever who opened up windows.
      However, technically he would be behind compared to some of today's greats - the greatest of whom is Hamelin (in terms of technical understanding). The level of precision and accuracy of today's playing (and I mean in delivering precise tone, nuance, dynamics and expression) compared to a century ago is night and day - it has dramatically improved due to the advent of recordings and refinements to piano technology. And of course, it also improved due to the advent of piano pedagogy as we understand piano playing and teaching more than ever today.
      Not to mention Liszt would find today's pianos monstrously heavy in regards to key touch.

    Just love this dramatic performance, even if it sounds as if he is on board the Titanic rather than floating on the water, it is certainly a 'Titanic' performance. I particularly like 1.42, 3.09 (sounds like a bear is jumping about!) and the ending 6.24, a quote from Liszt Funerailles. Liszt did of course approve of students making musical improvisations on his works, so this is fine by me!

    Having just listened to Wilhelm Kempff's version this performance strikes me as rather insensitive and hard driven. This is a visionary piece of (quasi-)religious fervour and does not need the technocrat virtuoso treatment. Kempff is technically vulnerable, he fumbles and misses plenty, but it is not important in the marvellous way he carries Liszt's noble vision over the mighty waves. Both the waves and vision largely seem to elude Hamelin here.
    What a strange pair of pianists to compare :) One can't really, and I am only talking about this particular piece though. I'm a huge fan of MAH and seldom disagree with anything he does. He just gets too glib sometimes. This stuff is far too easy for him.

      Stop making excuses for those who have weak technique. Hamelin goes to the pathos of this piece by putting his incredible technique at the service of the music; one cannot explore the deep meaning of Liszt's music by playing it as if it was a bloody lullaby. I gather you don't understand the meaning of this piece...good walking over the waves of evil et cetera.

    @CanAlternateLostTape 11 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I agree.......technically he can't be faulted and his tone is lush, but he has little feeling for the religious grandeur of Liszt's portrait in sound.......to me his phrasing seems capricious and not born of the melody, and yes his left hand scales remain scales, never magically transmuted to the waves St. Francis walked upon.

    Rather screws up on the last six bars. There's a very interesting version of this played on a contemporary Erard, 1860, iron framed piano, where the trumpet fanfare at the end is very convincing as is the raging torrent before St Francis de Paule walks on the waves, and the warning buoy rings out its tocsin.

  • @christophernorman2671
    @christophernorman2671 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's true that the very best pianists never give a mediocre performance: a great pianist on an off day plays atrociously. I play this piece; it's not super difficult (less difficult than Chopin studies for example), but it's very dense with notes from beginning to end and there are lots of things you can mess up if you're not on form. (The double-note arpeggios at the end for example, which he completely misses.) Someone recorded this surreptitiously I presume; I can't imagine he would have allowed this to be released commercially. I've nothing but respect for Hamelin of course, but we shouldn't suspend our critical faculties just because a recording has a famous name attached to it. I recommend Pierre-Laurent Aimard's recording of this piece.

    • @jrb5077

    This piece requires a certain charisma from its performer. Hamelin has always been deficient in that area, but in this piece it's glaring. And no, it's not because his technique makes it too easy for him to play. The new generation of pianists are his technical equals if not more so. It's because he's one of the last of the boring literalists that started to plague pianism from the 1920s up until the 1980s. It's hard to make music like this sound pedestrian, but he manages. Bravo!

      Totally agree.
      There is a recording of Horowitz playing the same Legend - and the difference is flagrant.
      While Horowitz truly performs this masterpiece in all of its emotional and religious grandeur, as well as shows all of the magnificent contrasts of Liszt’s writing, Hamelin basically scans the score like an AI - technically perfect, but without an ounce of any musical feeling.
      It is unfortunate that this performance got 300 000 views, while Horowitz’s brilliant interpretation has less than 5k.
      P. S. Sorry if there are some mistakes - I’m not a native English speaker.

He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy and is one of the greatest virtuoso pianists in the World. He never shows off, never plays angrily. He is faithful to the title and spirit of the music, and his technique is strong and powerful. But he uses his technique to serve the meaning behind the music.
