      Lol yes, but this has always bought a single thought into my mind, why the hell is Arcadia the single most "safest" or "defended" place on Gallifrey? like logically thinking wouldn't that be The Citadel? e.g. the home of the Time Lord High Council, The Capitol, oh and also probably the one place where TARDIS's are constructed/ grown and kept, the location of the highest concentration of Time Lord's at any one point in time and also where the majority of all the "important people" within Time Lord/ normal Gallifreyan society lives/resides most of the time?

      Crazy idea:
      Is there a 'region free' version of all the big game consoles cuz some time ago I learned there was a Doctor Who video game for the PS2 and I'd love to give it a try.
      Obviously, I may not like it merely because of it having our favorite mad man in a blue box, but I'd still like to try it.
      As a longtime Star Wars fan, I've seen plenty of games that DIDN'T make the cut.
      In fact, I once responded to the person from whom I bought such a game with
      "You did your part just great. It's not your fault the game sucks roadkill through a straw!"

      A Dr Who shooter in the vein of Planetside or Battlefield where you could choose a classic warrior race as your faction (Dalek, Time Lord, Sontaran etc) would be beyond epic. A Total War esque game would be great too

    The point of this story is that despite what the soldier is saying, the reflection is NOT an hallucination. The Time Lords have taken to reanimating the dead. In past episodes it's been said that war crimes were committed by both sides, that the Time Lords fell to the level of the monsters they were fighting.

    • @KelniusTV
      @KelniusTV 9 ปีที่แล้ว +188

      1701spacecadet, I don't think that's official, but I like that interpretation. After all, there's no reason a soldier's family would want to see their beloved fight and die. It makes more sense that it's a recording to be removed and put into their new body.

    • @1701spacecadet
      @1701spacecadet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +141

      And if you think about it, it would explain why the Doctor had no choice to 'destroy' both the Daleks AND the Time Lords.

    • @greenaum
      @greenaum 9 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      1701spacecadet Where do you get that from? His face looks a bit like a skull but maybe that's just the front of his helmet. What makes you think he's a reanimated corpse? And does that mean the "hallucination" earlier is a scene from his previous life, possibly just before he was killed for the first time?
      Does Steven "Grecian 2000" Moffat have anything to say about this?

    • @idiot685
      @idiot685 8 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      +greenaum Why would you think the hallucination scene is from his earlier life when they said in the clip it's a premonition? A premonition is a prediction of the future. Of course, they said it's not really a premonition, but obviously he was seeing into the future of the Time War.

      Or perhaps a Northern Accent is the mark of a Warrior on Gallifrey, as both the War Doctor and the Ninth Doctor had them, the two most Warrior-like incarnations of The Doctor, and now we find the entire Platoon of Time Lord Warriors have Northern Accents, seems like too big a coincidence. Also, while "Lots of planets have a North!" Seems completely in character, we know that Time Lord accents change every body so aren't governed by birthplace, and it's a bit of a stretch to think that a northern accent is a universal constant in every planet with magnetic poles, and wouldn't the Doctor try to impress Rose with his scientific brilliance? Unless he didn't want to tell her the truth because of how much it hurt. And so he gave a jokey answer, because that's the only way to hide the pain.

      Pedro Cavalcante Santana Well, the Time Lords had the technology and weaponry to kill the Daleks, its just that they were heavily armored, with insane shield power, and the Daleks could kill almost anything(including Gallifreyans) in a single shot, whereas it takes a LOT more than 1 hit to take down a Dalek. So yeah, 1 Dalek, with maybe the element of surprise, could DEFINITELY destroy Arcadia if they weren't ready. And they weren't ready for that attack.

    • @theconeezeanemperor1619

      Also, the shear fact that "nothing can get through" is part of it. Think of the Home Guard in Britain in WW2, I get the impression this is basically the role filled by the soldiers in Arcadia. So, one dalek gets in, and it can a lot in the time it takes what amounts to a small unit to kill it.

    I think one of my favourite things about the Daleks is the reason they’re so scary.
    They don’t look scary, it’s a bin with a whisk and a plunger, but it’s their views their technology and what they represent that’s terrifying.
    Daleks are completely evil, narcissistic, sadistic and hateful creatures, they view themselves as the superior race in the universe and will wipe out anything that isn’t them just to prove it.
    They revel in their own hatred for non Dalek kind that it’s considered art to them, something that’s considered beautiful and worthy of keeping, an example of this being the asylum.
    But worst of all is that they have the ability to wipe out billions within a blink of an eye, one dalek trapped in a room with hundreds of soldiers armed to the teeth in the latest military grade tech could win because of its technology and determination to rid the universe of anything that isn’t it.
    They represent the phrase “it’s not because of what it will do but because of what it can do.” And even the time lords know that.
    Listen to the desperation and fear in that soldier’s voice over just one of these things and it’ll tell you everything you need to know, even a race of beings with the tools and tech needed to kill these things are sent shaking in their boots when just one is on the planet. To the point of sirens being set off over it.
    You don’t set precautions like that up for one enemy without reason, its appearance maybe ridiculous but it’s everything else that’s scary about it, the fact it could and would wipe out billions of people on its own without a shred of remorse or hesitation for the soul reason whatever it’s killing not being it is more terrifying than any other creature in doctor who and it’s why in my eyes they’re the best and worst enemy in the series.

      Gallifreyans were a humanoid species native to the planet Gallifrey. The powerful Time Lords arose from this species, and considered themselves to be the elite of Gallifreyan society. (PROSE: Interference - Book Two)

  • @hagamapama

    heh. I know how they did it. The Sky Trenches were the last best defense the Time Lords can invent. Layers or inverted time, some slower, some faster, some reverse, designed so that no living being could live to cross them, weapons fired through them would encounter the quick time ribbons and disperse, living beings would be torn apart by alternate superaging and rejuvinating different parts of the body until the victim died of old age, regressed past infancy, or a mix of the two. Dalek armor was useless against it because the manipulated time fields played havoc with the pilot regardless of armor. The space of the trench itself was literally impossible for a living being to occupy or fire through. It was the perfect defense -- as long as the enemy could be kept on their side of the trench.
    The Daleks. solved the problem in a very simple way, doing the one thing the Time Lords didn't think to ward against. They sent an empty Dalek suit down, using an automated drone as pilot. One designed to be incredibly simple and last for billions of years if needed. Aging, regressing and slowing had no effect on the drone, and Dalek shells themselves are designed to endure almost anything. Once the drone was through they had a reference point to bring their whole force through the barrier
    and Arcadia fell.

The Time Lords simply most likely ran out of resources and the war went on for ages so there must've been some resistance. Just the fact that a billion billion daleks was too much and when you destroy some they just make some more daleks. They had no chance.

    • @TheAlchymist
      @TheAlchymist 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Illusionz Man Running out of resources? We're talking TIME LORDS. We're talking people who tamed exploding stars for their ships. From the Ninth Doctor and the Tenth Doctor we've heard how bloody this war got, you can see it in them how brutal it was and the episode 'The End of Time' they said the Time Lords went dark unleashing things that should not have been free to reign to win this war. 'The Night of the Doctor' mini-episode made me think "Oh god, the Time Lords were really out of control. Burning the Universe alongside the Daleks." and then it was just weak... All we got is the invasion of the Daleks and how one Dalek could destroy a Gallifreyan city which just sounds RIDICULOUS! What this basically shows is that Daleks are superior to Time Lords which I'm just not impressed with.

    All stand before the untempered schism when they reach the age of 8 but only those Gallifreyans who graduate from The Academy earn the title of Time Lord and only those with that title get a TARDIS! Though there might have been times where those who haven't graduated gained a TARDIS either as a hand me down heirloom or from a Gallifreyan junkyard. But why am I telling you all this? ;)

      +DarkComet360 I heard all people born on Gallifrey are Gallifreyans. Gallifreyans who wish to become Timelords must apply for the acadamy, where they are subject to the Untempered Schism (Meaning not all Gallifreyans were subject to it) but once graduated from the academy gain the ability to regenerate and the title of Timelord. Then they have to take a TARDIS licence in order to pilot one. When a Gallifreyan had been granted the rank of Junior Time Lord in the Academy, they received their symbiotic nuclei. (A symbiotic nuclei is what allows Timelords access to time travel) To graduate they were tested, with a pass rate of 51% (such as that achieved by the Doctor), up to a "Triple First" grade (like Romana I), and could take the test more than once if necessary, with the result being confidential. Only 3 Timelords regenerated on-screen. (The Master, The Doctor and Romana) all three graduated the academy. So even with Canon to back me up, It is clear to regenerate you must graduate.

    • @theaboulomaniac
      @theaboulomaniac 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +Sonicbolt Just because we saw 3 graduates all regenerate doesn't mean that non graduates can't regenerate. I take it that all Gallifreyans have exposure to the time vortex and it's this that give them the ability to regenerate, in the same way that River gained the ability to regenerate through TARDIS time travel (and with a bit of tinkering from the Silence). And even if it's not the case that the whole planet is exposed and every Gallifreyan can regenerate, by this logic at least all those that were exposed to the Untempered Schism should have gained that ability by exposure

    • @Sonicbolt456
      @Sonicbolt456 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Benjamin Faircloth not all Gallefrayans are exposed to the time vortex. I have legit sources of information. If you can show me one that is confirmed then sure. But I stand by canon terms that Timelords get there title once graduating and regeneration is alowed once graduated

      @theaboulomaniac 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Sonicbolt being late at night, I'm only going off the tardis wikia at the moment, which cites different reasons for the existence of regeneration in audio stories etc, but the only tv origin theory is when the eleventh doctor theorises that it was caused by billions of years of exposure to the untempered schism

    On the one hand, this is awesome and I screamed when I heard Arcadia, on the other hand, I don't really like this because they are just too human-like... this is too simple for the Time War, this looks like they could be just advanced humans, and Arcadia should have been a planet, not just a city on Gallifrey... it should have been BIGGER.
    ...Yeah, I still have very, very mixed feelings about the whole 50th package.

      MurrayTheMac
      Um, I was not talking about appearance, I was taking about culture and behavior and ability. This, and the rest of what we saw, just looks like a normal space-age battle. They should not call that a Time War. What I imagined was more like chaos that cannot be perceived by human eyes - timelines tangled, multiple paradoxical versions of the same battle being replayed as they go back and try to change things sothe outcome benefits them, breaking all of their own laws of Time, paradox machines and reapers and warfare relying on bombs that twist time, creating pockets of slow-time and acceletared time where the difference kills you when you step through it, unless you are capable of creating your own time field like a trained Time Lord... "at its heart, millions die every second, lost in bloodlust and insanity. With time itself resurrecting them, to find new ways of dying over and over again. A travesty of life." Multiple deaths of the same person stretched out over parallels existing at the same time, "Never-were", whose planets of origin had already been wiped from existence so they could never have been born and yet they still linger as vengeful echoes... That's what I expect. I expect Time Lords to be more alien than advanced humans, cause they are not human at all. Think how diverse Earth culture is, even now, not to mention throughout the ages - and Time Lords have nothing to do with humans.

    • @MurrayTheMac
      @MurrayTheMac 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      EmeraldWings90 None of that stuff was depicted when Daleks and Time Lords battled each other in old Doctor Who, so why would they suddenly start doing it now?
      Time Lords have been depicted on-screen many, many times. What we saw there was not in conflict with their previous representations.

    • @EmeraldWings90
      @EmeraldWings90 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      MurrayTheMac
      Because it would be awesome? And because they hinted at it?
      I don't know, my expectations were just a bit higher. This is just a personal opinion. And I know they have been depicted before, and while I have not seen all of Classic Who, what I have seen of them there seemed a bit more alien than this - they were excessively formal and haughty, for example. And even that seems to be missing here. So I do think this was in conflict with their previous representations a bit - maybe not in fact, but in spirit.

    • @MurrayTheMac
      @MurrayTheMac 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      EmeraldWings90 The Council of Gaillifrey were always presented as being formal and haughty, and they still are in the new series ... the Council seen in The End of Time definitely is. Normal Time Lords have never been portrayed as having to follow that mold though. Romana, for one, was never particularly stuck up or haughty. And remember we're seeing your average soldier instead of the leaders of the Time Lords.
      The disappointment you're feeling is because of something you built up in your own head, and it's a bit unfair to say they failed just because they didn't meet your unrealistic expectations.

  • @Jerrytcale
    @Jerrytcale 11 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    The Time Lords have gone from an all powerful civilization when they were first introduced with the Second Doctor, to nothing more than humans with a little bit of neuro-tech. Even if you argue that these may have just been Gallifreyans and that Time Lords are the upper class, the Time Lords should easily have predicted this and teleported the Daleks away. Or even destroyed them with the infinite power they posses with the eye of harmony.

    • @Togekab00m
      @Togekab00m 11 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Remember that the Daleks also have Time Lord technology at this point in history, so it's likely they have a ridiculous number of counter-measures, not to mention the fact that these "sky trenches" are likely war-time manifestations of the highest levels of Time Lord technology anyway.

    • @ejcmoorhouse
      @ejcmoorhouse 11 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      If the Time Lords could do that to Daleks I think they would have won the time war. Remember the Daleks have tech just as good as the Time Lords 1 lone Dalek can take over a planet millions don't bare thinking about. And remember the Time Lords are peaceful race I doubt they would have had enough time to come up with effective weapons against Daleks.

    • @codo820
      @codo820 11 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The Daleks were almost as advanced as the Time Lords by this point but were also much more numerous and bloodthirsty. The Timelords by their nature weren't initially all that into weapons tech so they started off with a disadvantage and were already losing by the time they had found the will to really fight. Plus the Daleks had continued to advance scientifically so this makes sense if you remember that Time lords aren't humans, they are far more removed from their animal natures than we are. If we had that kind of technology we would have come up with at least a dozen different ways to neutralize them before they even started their first attack but Time Lords don't think like us.

      To be more specific, it's a type of barrier, encompassing the entire planet, but mostly from the beam weaponry of the Daleks, hence why they had soldiers on alert. While the Daleks couldn't blow the planet apart from orbit, that doesn't stop them from physically entering the planet's atmosphere.

    My thoughts are simple on how they got through. Going through a sky trench for a dalek would take 10000000000000/1 odds. So getting through two would mean that only a fraction of the survivors could get through. But then, it only takes a single cell of dalek DNA to make a new dalek. You could grow a full on dalek, take each of it's cells apart, and make another billion or so, go about with this for about a month and you've got enough to get one dalek through.

    I personally thought this was awful. Have you ever played an Arcade point-and-shoot game? Then you've seen this mini-sode already at the start of that game. Bad acting, bad production value, bad effects, generic, obvious, I predicted the Dalek reveal a mile away. Was this seriously produced and written by the same guys from the Night of the Doctor? Big step down. This feels like it was made by an amatuer and it added nothing to the special. The fact that iTunes tried to charge us Brits for this for £2 yesterday is rediculous.

    • @crazybananagurl1999
      @crazybananagurl1999 11 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Who cares if it's bad effects and acting and stuff? They don't have all the money in the world, you know, and probably had to settle for something simple, and actors who didn't have to be payed a lot. They probably blew their budget on Day of the Doctor and Night of the Doctor, and only had little money to make something like this. Plus, it's the beginning(sort of) to the fall of Arcadia.

    • @chriscowman
      @chriscowman 11 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      So you think that witnessing the fall of arcadia adds nothing to the special. Have you wondered who the soldier was who's eyes we were looking through? Also, what part of this mini looks like it was made by amateur? The effects are way better than they were even during the 9th Doctors series. That pretty much tells me that you're a big poopy head who's just sour because iTunes tried to screw the UK yesterday.

    • @FatalDownpour

      Christopher Cowman The fall of Arcadia is unimportant and the Daleks looked terrible. The big deal made about them being real just made it hilarious. • @SundownWarrior
      @SundownWarrior 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      FatalDownpour The fall of Arcadia is the most important part of the Time War. After it falls the Time Lords decide to perform the Final Sanction. It is the only reason the Doctor decides to eradicate his own race. Because of that particular moment. But I suspect that you're as ignorant as you sound. That was said back in End of Time when the Time Lords try to return to the Universe along with the Time War. The Doctor mentions particularly the Fall of Arcadia as a turning point in the war so it is the most important part of it (I'm implying it more if I have to).
