Hey Guys, l just need to stress this point: With this video I'm not saying that the fuel seperator is a wrong,or bad thing.Engineers obviously knew what they were doing when they designed this part..,but what I am saying is that the fuel that we getting today literally can boil in the fuel seperator,..and this causes a problem,as the heat vaporises the fuel that goes into the carburetor..causing performance issues ..If you are able to use a bit of creative thinking you could move the seperator away from the heat of the engine,where it can still function normally and not hinder or obstruct other parts on the engine .
I follow your advice on the T-piece mr paul and my problems is solved,driving for a month now withvthe T-piece and have no problems anymore...Thank you Mr paul for your good advice
Ok that's great to hear ..Just ensure you have a fuel return line. It can actually work without the return line ,but then you have too much fuel pressure on the carb line ..and you will see fuel leaking on the side of carb...and it can also cause a hard start because it will flood ,like wetting the spark plugs...

I have seen someone move the separator to the end of the cylinder head,like above the distributor...and it doesn't get so hot there..and apparently he says it works fine there..but u will have to make it fit there ,by making a bracket.

Had my 1800 Golf 1 20 years. It's 32 years old. 300,000 on the clock. Never had an issue with this, and I redline it everytime I drive it. Guess I'm just lucky.
I was thinking about this. I am going to try the 'creative ' option initially, and will move the fuel Seperator to a cooler place. If this does not improve things a delete will be in order !
@@pjs-golfmk1-diy I deleted the unit, there was no Improvement on moving it. I also fitted a bit of a restriction to the return as you suggested. I was able to purchase a brass tee piece which for me is a good solid alternative. I opened the separator unit to see why it was faulty, not so much dirt, but the plastic screen was loose and I think the fuel quality as you said makes a difference. So far all is well and I am happy with performance. Further, I did recently change the very old original coil...... Further improvement In performance. Thank you so much for your channel.
I still had to keep mine...it serves as the return line back to the tank and helps reduce pressure into the carburetor. Do you have a video of a tear down of the pieburg VW golf carburetor?
@pj's i have a 1993 mk1 golf carb, my issue is on a slope she sikkels to start could the fual seperator cause this problem ? If not what could be the cause 🤷
Hello sir..i have a 1.4 carb and my problem is the car's idle is fine then all of a sudden it drops and go's up and down but after i rev it over 3x1000 then its good again for a while and when it does that it struggle to start also

Hello ,I have some trouble with my car,std 2liter 8valve golf mk1 agg carburetor motor with a 276 cam,the problem im facing is when i drive and the engine is warm and i park it for 30-40 minutes and then try to start it the car takes about 7seconds of cranking before it starts but if i leave it for an hour it start perfectly in one kick, same if the engine is warm and i switch it off and restart the engine it starts perfectly ,something is happening in that 30-40 minutes when i leave it,it is a freshly build motor and it did that before the rebuild aswell,other than that the car drive perfectly ,hopefully someone had this problem before because I'm wasting money on parts that isn't the issue . Things i have changed: New carburetor+baseplate New distribitor with leads New fuel pump New coil New tp-100 module New fuel tank breather New fuel separator,does the same without and return line blanked off New steel fuel filter The choke is wired fully open all the time

For the restrictor I used an old carb jet, I just drilled the hole out to make it a bit bigger I forget exactly but I think to 2mm. The old car jet fits nicely into the 6mm rubber hose.
I moved my fuel separator about 2years ago. No problem since. Not sure how to add a pic here to show anyone who needs abit of guidance or just an idea on how to do it or how i did it. Since i moved it, i no longer get stuck cause the carburettor is not getting fuel.
Going to do this. I bought my 2007 1.4 CitiRythm with the separator delete already done. It’s there still but not connected. My pump is going directly to my carb… I notice the leaking also. How big of a an in-line fuel restrictor do you use or is it not so important? Thanks!

Did you replace the fuel pump with a genuine Pierburg? I find most if not all non-genuine fuel pumps cause fuel starvation so you do have to delete the separator as shown in the video@@quintusvanderwalt2916

The inline restrictor is a one way valve and only allows a certain amount of fuel to run back to tank.. basically it partially restricts the flow..and that sort of maintains or regulates the fuel pressure going into the carb...If you had no restrictor,fuel would flow back to tank too fast and too much..and in that case your carb would be starved ,causing too little fuel for optimum performance...
Thanks for your response. As you converted, my thoughts were the following. What is the diameter of the t-piece. What is the restrictor value, is it 5psi or 8psi. I don't want to do it and find that it either to low
@@bernardmartin3322 the restrictor has been on my engine since it's existence ..( VW factory fitted ).you should have one on your fuel return if u have a fuel seperator .Don't have the exAct diameter of t piece ,but it fits snug into 6mm fuel hose
Thanks. My son actually has a mk2 1600 golf. The original restrictor broke but was replaced with a 3mm diameter oneway valve. I think the original was about 1-1.5mm in diameter. Will have to look for one. Thanks . I think the small diameter is actually restricting the fuel. I stand corrected of course. Thanks again.
@@bernardmartin3322 I'm not sure if Goldwagen stocks them because I've heard of people struggling to find them..I'm too scared to even tamper on mine to take it out,(just in the unfortunate scenario it also breaks), so that I could have a good look what's written on it in terms of size and psi .But I'm also going to try and source new one before I take mine out .

I moved mine away from the engine and this solved the problem. Our fuel has some ethanol in it which has lowered the boiling point.

I think the fuel separator acts to keep fuel closer to the carb for easier starting.

old main jet from citi golf carb, it fits well enough not to get 'lost in the workings of the pipe.@@dannybotha62

Apparently they not easily available.,try small spares shops ,second hand spares etc
