RMSTATOR 2004-2008 Yamaha YZF-R1 Flywheel Remplacement + Stator & Regulator Installation

  • The 2004-2008 Yamaha YZF-R1 is an amazing sportbike, but it has a weak point. This generation R1 used a unique high RPM gear-driven race-style flywheel that was known for the magnets coming loose. When this happens stator damage occurs, along with debris in the crankcase. RMSTATOR has developed a direct replacement flywheel for this motor with heavy-duty epoxy and encased magnets to prevent this from happening.
Follow along with RMSTATOR's Engineer Evan as he installs an RMSTATOR flywheel, stator, and voltage regulator on our 2007 Yamaha YZF-R1. You can easily do this job yourself in your own garage with no special tools.
The same parts fit the Yamaha FZ1and FZ8 models from 2006 and onwards, with a very similar installation procedure.
All parts are available online: www.rmstator.com/documents/La...

here's a small improvement to the flywheel installation procedure..... to get the teeth on both gears to line up, simply put your bike in 1st gear and move rear wheel a bit in both directions while pushing flywheel in.... teeth line up easily every time

Firstly, thank you RM for this how to video. I have a 2007 R1 and decided to proactively change the rotor even though mine looked fine at 22k. I didn't see the need to replace the stator so just did the rotor. I had 3 options, $950.Cnd for OEM, or $250 for the RM or Kimpex (China Made) replacement. I called RM Stator first but they were unfortunately resistant to answer my questions, I found their customer service poor. I ordered a Kimpex brand one which looked exactly the same as RM Stator's. The rotor looked decent but had improper machine tolerances, the spacer didn't fit over the shaft - some people apparently sand it down but I didn't feel comfortable doing this, nor should you need to if machined properly. Additionally, it fit too loosely when seated in the bearing. Returned for OEM. BTW the OEM has updated this part and it does look slightly different than these Chinese knock offs. In a high HP, high RPM engine, I'd buy Japan made OEM... just my opinion. Good luck & stay safe!

Exactly what I was looking for . About to order up a genuine Yamaha thanks to this comment . 513$ usd for oem , 215$ for rm stator. Always nice to save a buck , but I’d rather go for quality over price on this one.

Just did this job on my 2005 Yamaha R1 because I had no idea what stator/flywheel was on the bike.. this video helped immensely and overall it is not to bad of a job to get done.. the only difference as other people have stated is the location of the rectifier/regulator on the 2005 model(not sure about other years).. upon taking my bike apart , every magnet on the oem flywheel was shattered and honestly im surprised my engine was still running as good as it was.. if you are unsure what you currently have on your bike, I would check.. my bike had an intermittent starting issue but it only happened once every two months so I didn't think anything of it.. finally it wouldn't start at all and that's what prompted me to take it apart and check what was going on.. one of my rubber dampers did end up falling into the engine because whoever was in there before me but the rubber that joins the two pieces and as soon as I got the the rotor off it fell or now that I think of it the previous person probably just left it in the oil pan from when they took it apart.. in addition to the stator cover gasket, I would have an oil pan gasket on hand just in case you have to take the oil pan down.. my gaskets all broke as soon as I separated the covers from the engine.. if you find any of your magnets broken you should take the oil pan down.. mine had a bunch of remnants of the broken magnets in there.. as for some of the comments talking about fitment issues I had none.. everything went together perfectly so Im not to sure what's going on there.. if anyone needs help or has questions just message me

I just took the stator and flywheel just in case off from my 06 R1.. and there it was, OEM rotor and few magnets are broken/moved little bit. So maybe I need to take off that oil pan too to see if there's some pieces of magnets too? I noticed couple of little scratches on stator and was thinking do I need to replace that too or is a new rotor all I need? And a new gasket of course. Bike has been starting and running normally and it's been driven over 60k km..

I just installed a new stator and flywheel then I got it from Rocky mountain Motorsports and ATV. It's the new upgraded model it's not the kind that's going to have the magnets break apart and kill you. So damn shame that Yamaha did not do a factory recall and see if it's all money and possibly our lives and bikes. My question is I've done everything the way you were showing us in the video except for my bikes not turning over the starter motor still has massive hesitation as if there's seizing in my motor. Even pushing it in gear in the back will just skid. Any ideas no washers or anything dropped into the gear casing. We did an oil change before the swap found no metal in the filter or in the oil that came out what do you think the problem is cold weather? Thanks

It's not often you find a detailed video like this one. I would like to add that even if that area of the engine had lots of oil, the gasket will seal the cover with the gasket without any sealant. Also not sure if this was done because it wasn't shown in the video, but the rubber grommet for the stator wires must have sealant RTV silicone etc., applied prior to installing the grommet into the cover, then apply more to the flat part of the grommet and about 5/16" on either side on the cover. If this is not done I guarantee you it will leak at some point in time.
