- Welcome to part 8 of this series on the reunification of the Great Central Railways in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. We're at the northern base again today - the Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre.
It's almost Christmas and this weekend sees the start of the Great Central Railway Nottinghams Jingle Bells express service. The first passenger services to make it further than fifty steps bridge and on to Rushcliffe Halt. Running the service is a class 107 first generation DMu, on loan from Nemesis Rail at Burton on Trent.
Also this week we have been the DMU carry out a test run as far as Loughborough and the brand new A60 bridge, making it the first passenger train to make it as far as the end of the line.
We hear from Tom Ingall about the current state of the Reunification and what we can expect next.
Whilst we are at the NTHC (Nottingham Transport Heritage Centre) we are able to take a look around, ride on the incredibly detailed minature railway system, see the model railways on show, the vintage buses on display and have a snack in the cafe.
We end the video featuring the service pulling into and leaving Rushcliffe Halt station as the sun sets for the last service of the day.

The Great Central Mainline was built as the London Extension of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway. Opening in 1899, it was designed to be as straight as possible with as little gradient as possible. Speed was the aim and express trains travelled between London Marylebone, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. It was the last UK mainline to be built before HS1 over a century later. It thrived initially, however with a lack of upkeep, neglect and dwindling usage, it was mothballed during the great railway rationalisation of Dr Beeching in the 1960s - known as the Beeching Axe.

I put the skirting boards in the cafe, painted walls, fitted stone guards to windows and emptied the emergency water tank out 31yrs ago, also did numerous other jobs there when I was one of the early volunteers there.
Brilliant film...thanks.
Thanks very much.
Faithfully restored dmu. Immaculate and beautiful!
It looked and sounded fantastic
Paul, A few things: First, being a kid at heart and a railfan myself, I can relate to being the only adult without a kid on miniature railways. Second,
I recognize Tom's distinctive speech as the 'voice' GCR's 'reunification' videos. Your interview of him was great, as it put a person (who seems fun and nice to boot) to the voice for me. Finally, even this Yank knows the Pacer would be my third choice! Cheers! Scott
😄 Cheers Scott.
Excellent video mate, it’s great they’ve got a DMU service running there again.
I remember DMU’s as well in the 80’s and 90’s, I always looked forwards to riding in one when I was a kid, like you though by the time I was travelling on my own on the trains the DMU’s had been phased out and the Sprinters and Pacers had taken over, for me I’d always go for the DMU.
Love that old bus as well.
Looking forwards to more of the GCR mate when you’r next there.👍
Great stuff.
Back later this month for another milestone 😀
Great filming, Tom the voice of the great central does a great job for the railway , nice to see trains to rushcliffe halt , so much to offer a wonderful railway , will be there soon as possible !
Thanks Steve
Great work. I was born 5 mins from Rushcliffe Halt. I can just about remember getting the train to Nottingham from there as a young kid.
Fantastic Michael. Will be great to see steam back there one day.
Thanks!
Thank you ever so much 👍
I would have gone on the miniature train without a child Paul! I think they are brilliant. Those buses in the shed are the type that ran when I was a kid, ours were in blue & cream. Pacers were known as buses on rails they were not supposed to be in service as long as they were. Well done all the volunteers! Great day. Cheers Paul. ❤😊👍
Thanks Carol. I wonder how many hours combined I have spent on pacers over the years 😄
Great to see all these heritage railways making it happen well done everyone 👍🚂
🙂👍
I would choose the DMU, they look so smart in their dark green. I remember them well. A few years ago my family bought me a birthday present to drive a steam loco on the GCR - an 8F. With my wife we spent the day there having lunch on a stationary train and a 5-course evening meal with steam-hauled trip up and down the line.
That sounds like a fantastic day out and experience 👍🙂
Excellent video , merry Christmas and Happy New year .
Thanks Mick. Happy new year to you too.
Very interesting Very informative thank you for posting your visit😊
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🙂
I love you GCR stuff..brill...have a great christmas
Thanks very much Darren
Have a great Xmas yourself
Oh wow, lovely to see that green D M U, I've got an old Hornby version that I need to sit down with and give it a service, it runs roughly at the moment. This has inspired me to get down to my shed and give it a run on my layout.
Excellent. I've got one in Network South East livery. One of my favourite sets.
Excellent stuff. Nice to have a word with Tom Ingall too. I know these things are long-drawn out, but I'm impatient to see progress!
😄 making progress bit by bit
Great video Paul, good to see things happening at Ruddington. I 2ent there in spring this year and was dead. Even the miniature railway was running. That looks a great railway. There was an excellent one near Wroxham but sadly closed and is now looking for new location.
I do miss diving DMUs I remember driving then around the north east to places like Whitby then later on I drove the load haul one quite a bit
Oh wow I remember the load haul one. Does my mind play tricks on me, or was that one a bubble car?
@WobblyRunner It was , it was a class 122. It never really worked properly always something going wrong with it
Great vlog many thanks for making and sharing. My choice would be the beautifully restored green DMU it looks great. As you say really good to see trains back on that section after so long I hadn't heard they had stopped apart from COVID time it looks such a great setup with so many different attractions.
Thanks John. The railway has great potential. Great choice on the DMU 👍🙂
Cheers Paul...excellent coverage....
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🙂
The dmu for the memories...Pacer for a bit of fun and the hst for the style and speed.
Nailed it 🙂👍
I'd choose 107 but I love the HST
Great choice 👍
Thank you for your presentation - great DMU. Here's to the future linking of the two sections of the GCN.
🙂👍
Nice to see them running again.Great filming Paul.I would have the DMU by the way.Be great to see it all linked up again.
Cheers Chris. DMU for me too. Unless Im going long distance, then it's the HST 🙂
Excellent video of your second viewing around the GCR Nottingham 👍👍 I’ve been enjoying your series of the GCR Reunification and I like the music at the start of your videos as it reminds me of the American music. My favourite of the DMUs at Ruddington is both actually because I’ve just like DMUs from every area.
Glad you've been enjoying them.
I think Pacers turned against me when we had to sit on one over the Settle & Carlisle line many years ago. Great for panoramic views though I suppose :)
Love the DMUs.
I received a Triang Hornby model of the green DMU back in 1960 as a Christmas present. So that makes it 64 years old.I still have it, in immaculate condition.
Greta stuff. Collectors item there 🙂
HST 125s are my favourite.,,...with the original livery, flying banana.
Many happy memories of the HSTs through Doncaster growing up.
First generation DMU's then the mighty 125 for me.
There was until recently, a Scammell that was in the livery of Sid Harrison of Tinsley, Sheffield parked near the bus garage....think it was an eight wheeler.
Sid was running Scammells built in the sixties carrying steel ( What else? 😀) from Sheffield to the Birmingham area regularly in the nineties. The history of Sid and his haulage business is worth a read.....he even had some steam locomotives in his yard, albeit stationary, for a job that he took on!
Blessed be!
Ooooh great info. I wasnt aware of that.
Great choice by the way 👍
@@WobblyRunner
No problem & thank you.
Regarding Sid, a good starting point is on Flikcr & Trucknet....other websites are available!!
Great video👍👍 Great to see trains running again on the north section of the GCR. I would choose the HST 125.
Great choice 👍🙂
I see yon small train had no issues with leaves on the line : ) Used to live in Loughborough, know the area & old line well, walked it loads of times.
😄
Lovely to capture some MK3s back in the ' Swallow' scheme. Prefer the blue/grey over all others but his one certainly propels the memories
Blue/Grey, Intercity, Swallow etc. They didnt seem to do a bad livery back then did they.
2:57 I like the model Barton bus. Also the bus museum at 4:41.
👍yeah it will be well worth a visit again when there is a bus event
I'm 72 so DMU (cats whiskers) 100% thanks for video
Thanks Chris. Great choice 🙂👍
6:53 the First Generation DMUs have far more character than the Pacers. My favourite train of all time, though, is the IC125.
Great choice 👍🙂
As a foreigner I probably choose the Pacer just to experience if it's so awful as they say 😂😂
🤣🤣
👍🙂
The vomit comets lol , they bounce all over the place , like being on a bouncy castle with seats , still I do miss them lol
DMU 100% reminds me going up Buxton from Manchester to see family
Great choice 👍🙂
How do you fit time in to go to work???😂
Well.....that is a problem
Stick to riding the toy train mate. Leave the film making for the professionals.
For what it's worth, I enjoyed this video of yours, so don't get disheartened by negative comments.
Great filming👍. 1st gen DMU for me as travelled to work on them. Ruddington on my list to visit 2025
Thanks Phil
