Big Milestone for the Great Central Railway Nottingham

- We're back at the Great Central Railway Nottingham to witness of big milestone for the railway. We are riding on the first passenger service in 5 years from Ruddington Fields to Loughborough - their special Twixmas service for one day only.
As the GCR Reunification bubbles away nicely behind the scenes, the GCRN continues to get back on it's feet. Before Christmas, their Jingle Bells Express services saw passenger trains returning to Rushcliffe Halt. However today we see the first service on the full length of the line as far as the newly replaced A60 bridge in Loughborough.
We board the Class 107 green DMU service from Ruddington Fields on the 11am service. We look for the usual landmarks of fifty steps bridge, Rushcliffe Halt, East Leake, Barnstone Tunnel and Stanford Viaduct. We turn around at the stop board as the entry to Loughborough. It gives a good view of the trackbed towards Loughborough Central of the renewed bridges and new viaduct yet to be built.
After riding the train, we head up to see the next service crossing the impressive Loughborough viaduct. As a bonus we also call in at Quorn & Woodhouse on the Great Central Railway Leicestershire.

Such an exighting project.
The p/w looks in far better condition, cuttings cut back etc than the national network. Well done to everyone, excellent video
I agree. Great job by the volunteers. Always friendly and happy to talk every time I go too.
What a great sight, a train on the A60 bridge and the beautiful, but sadly defaced Stanford-on-Soar viaduct. I really hope as part of the reunification, the grafitti will be removed asap. Lovely ride!
If they do, alas the morons will waste no time in adding more.
I can't wait to witness a steam loco puffing away over there. Full rake of restored MK1s. But as you say, shame about the grafiti.
Hi Paul, well that looks fun! A beautiful day an historic day on the GCR. Its great seeing a busy train rolling through the countryside seeing some lovely bridges & stopping at places of interest. The old DMU not luxurious but gets you from A to B. Nice aerial shots Paul. The steam train was a fab bonus! I bet you had a grand day out, thanks for sharing your exciting day. 😊🤗👍❤️
Thanks Carol. A great day. I'd been working all the xmas period and this was my first day off, so it was great to get out and see so much 🙂
Not luxurious? It looks better than the CrossCountry I was stuck on last week!
The DMU & other rolling stock are better appointed comfort wise as opposed to modern tut.
Make a DMU time machine and head to Nottingham Victoria before they laid it waste in 1968.
Fabulous video, thanks. There's so much railway history to be seen here, and things will only get more exciting as reunification nears. Incidentally, a few days later (January 6th and 7th), the River Soar was much, much fuller and wider and parts of Quorn were deep under water!
Thanks very much Mike.
I did wonder about the Soar around there. Hopefully everyone was safe.
@WobblyRunner On the night of 6th/7th, Police had to evacuate caravan park at Barrow, with people rescued from floating caravans.
A bit of time capsule history at 3:18 - the original Trans-Clyde network maps, dating from 1979 when the Argyle Line (Glasgow Central Low Level) line re-opened. That version lasted until 1983 when the line to Paisley Canal and Kilmacolm closed. I suspect that some of the missing colours will be when the revised map was simply stuck over the original, and hence, when the stuck on version was removed, it took some of the other markings.
Nice video, despite your technical issues.
Cheers! 👍
I was kicking myself i only noticed the maps when I was editing the footage. I'll have to have a closer look when I go back.
Memories of 1963 and a trip from Nottingham Vic to Rugby hauled by a Riddles 9F locomotive.
Wow. Did you know at that point the line was going to be closing Stephen?
Love this series, keeps us in touch with progress being made on the GCR. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed! 👍🙂
Very enjoyable commentary
Cheers Mike 👍
Great footage. I travelled on the railway back in 2017 when they had a steam engine running, would like to visit again now it's up and running. Lovely looking DMU they've got there.
Beautiful isn't it David.
Hopefully they'll get a steam loco up and running again. I think that will be important after regular services return.
Brilliant footage, well done. Lovely to see it travelling over that viaduct (shame about the graphiti though).
Thanks very much.
Wow. I’m going have to ride that track soon! What a great day out with gorgeous blue skies. The footage capturing that beautifully restored DMU passing over the viaduct was nothing short of magnificent! Very jealous I couldn’t make it now 😊
🙂 it was a real treat Jon. Plenty of time to visit hopefully after regular services return soon.
All looking good, coming along fine.
Better things awaiting completion, then GCR can really show it's paces!
Yep. Plenty to look forward to.
What's this? A dry, sunny day? The age of miracles didn't desert you! Good to see plenty of punters; augers well for the future. Thanks for the video.
Haha 😄a miracle indeed.
A rare lapse in the wind too.
Interesting to see. In 1969 I travelled on a DMU, all the way from Rugby Central to Nottingham Arkwright Street.
Crikey!! That must have been one of the last services?
@WobblyRunner yes it was. I was going to Nottingham Polytechnic for an interview. Someone at school told me the line was still open, so I was delighted to have a chance to travel on the Central. The DMU was a noisy old train, grinding through the gears. A relative who worked at Rugby Midland told me the staff at Rugby would go up to the Central station in the winter, and leave the DMU on tickover all night, so it would be ready to go in the morning!
This is good news indeed :) that dmu interior is unique with the table seating :)
🙂 a real pleasure to ride.
@WobblyRunner how long is the journey?
it was around 90 mins return trip.
Super vlog thank you. At last it all seems to be settled down on that line and progress is being made. Wonderful. Must pay a visit soon!!
👍thank you. Hopefully regular service running at some point this year.
I know the feeling losing footage or sound. You did very well to recover.
Cheers. At least it wasnt all a write off.
The sections with music and no talking were the highlights for me. Can't stand the commentary.
Thanks for sharing , super job , must visit as soon as possible , rushcliffe halt very actractive location, hope they have an open day there soon ,
Cheers Steve.
Nice unit, not keen on headlights but in great condition. I didn't realise there was any 107s in running order. That signalbox is also great. I have a model of it on my layout
Great shout on the signal box. I've not really mentioned it yet. Was hoping to have a closer look at some point.
@@WobblyRunner I'll send you a picture of my model when I'm next in the room
Great work as usual.
Thanks very much Michael 👍
Great series. Thanks Paul Happy New year's
Thanks Paul. Happy New Year!!
Another GCR great vid... Happy new year to you,
Cheers 👍 Happy New Year 🍾
Happy everything, hope you had a great time, wishing you all the best of luck for this year! My visit to this place won't be this year, but it will happen in a couple of years time, a long 1 in the making. Now something very fitting is another TH-camr I watch, The Village Idiot (TVI) began the Rushcliffe series this time last year and completed it just before Christmas, and all of Nottinghamshire for that matter, he's now working on more of Leicestershire this year after only lightly visited it in the past couple of years. I cannot recall if I have ever set foot in Leicestershire before, but I have been to Nottinghamshire, and I can predict a fun visit when I get to these parts!👍👏
Nice one Joe. Well worth the wait.
@WobblyRunner Thanks Paul, my visit will come some day and who knows if I'll meet you there, I also forgot to mention that up until TVI started the Rushcliffe series, I originally thought Rushcliffe was in Leicestershire but thanks to him, I now know it's Nottinghamshire. With Leicestershire now postponed as a family member has just recently moved to Taunton (Somerset is another county I don't know if I've set foot in, as I have been to Devon and Cornwall, but I have got a big list for that county for the coming years), I have decided this year will hopefully see a visit to 1 of its neighbouring counties, Rutland (never been) or Northamptonshire (only briefly stopped at Watford Gap and Northampton services on my trips to London), both of which I'm really looking forward to visiting with a lot to see!
Love that DMU, although for some reason it reminds me of something out of East Germany in the 1980s.👍
😄.
It really is immaculate.
Any chance they will clean up the Graffiti ?
Such a shame isn't it.
had a talk with Malcolm Holmes at Severn valley last monday and he is hoping to run connecting buses between quorn and rushcliffe again this year. Want to mountsorrel and rushcliffe branches this year. thanks for this film. caroline.
Great stuff. I need to make the effort to get to a gala this year.
Brand new bridge - already hit by a lorry by the looks of it!
Yeah it didnt take long. Thankfully the impact beams took the brunt.
I love seeing railways being brought back, Is the railway going to go across that viaduct that’s not connected eventually
Hi Michael. Yes. It's currently in planning, so in a number of years time the services will reach Loughborough over the new bridge.
@ jolly good
Fab!
The fact that people praise content like this just encourages the poor quality.
Cheers Declan 👍🙂
@AllenDowie I can't tell if this is a wind up.
Be nice if East Leake Reopens once reunification is complete
I agree. Hopefully at some stage in the future, something can be worked out.
Great to see them getting back on their feet again. Don't know if you know if they still have the US S160's in bits up there??
That's a great question. I've not seen it, but I havent been into any sheds at Ruddington. Looking on ukrailforums it looks like they were moved.
@WobblyRunner Thanks. One of them passed through the Newport depot in WW2 (I've done loads on them on TH-cam). I'll have a look on rail forums.
Random thought on the GCR....would it be an idea if the reunified GCR could/should form a partnership with the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton Road. Should the line re-open north from Aylesbury Vale towards Bletchley, perhaps between the aforementiod may potentially work towards operating a main line tour/occasional service to/from Marylebone to/from the GCR via Bletchley and Midland Mainline. Other services could go over other remaining GC rails for rail tours. Could this idea go on to become a cooperative rail operator similar to one already in existence. Services could include Aylesbury to Milton Keynes and perhaps get involved with the campaign to reopen the Ivanhoe line from Leicester to Burton.
Oooh something to bear in mind for the future
@@WobblyRunner
One way to preserve our rail heritage whilst fundraising along with potentially providing an everyday rail service.
It didn't take long for the new over bridge to get clobbered! The black/yellow warning signage has been damaged!
Looks like the impact bars did their job. There was a photo in the news of a truck hitting it not long after it was installed.
Any chance of getting to Gotham, East Leake and Bunny?😊
Ooooh yes.
I wanted to capture it at Bunny Lane bridge. Just missed it sadly.
I did a video on East Leake former station earlier this year. I planned to film the last train passing through the station, but the light deserted me.
11:08 Poor little kid falls over
How do they currently get rolling stock onto the Southern section of GCR? Do they have to get trucked in? I can’t see a direct mainline connection???
Yeah. I beleive unload the trucks at Quorn in the goods yard.
Pending the embankment/viaduct how about ramps and an ‘Evil Knieval’ reunification?
😄 I'd be in the queue for a ticket to that!
6:34 SITTING, not sat
Thanks 👍
Why can’t a height gauge be installed before the new bridge ,across the road in both directions ? I can’t believe that some idiot has already walloped it .
yeah it didnt take long did it.
Hope they get rid of that eyesore graffiti 👿
Great news ❤ shame about all the shitty graffiti all over the Stanford viaduct, why do these idiots not understand the beauty and skill of the great engineering features of the past? No respect 😢
Yeah it is a shame unfortunately.
01:14 Lovely new bridge and already some numbskull has bashed it.
yeah it didnt take long
The brainless graffiti is depressing, it's everywhere.
Can someone please explain this to me, and say it simply as I'm the proverbial village idiot
A decent video ruined by your narrative. Your accent is so offputting and your gramar is appauling. Sorry.
A bit harsh and personal to have a go at the way someone speaks.
I normally delete comments that are personal and don't add anything to the video, but I found this one quite funny.
PS. I wrote that in a non-Yorkshire accent.
Personally I liked the narration. To the point, no waffle and a pleasant professional tone 😊 (not so keen on hearing my own voice in the background on one of the sequences with live sound!)
