I finally got my mister pi. These videos are so much more relevant to me now lol. Thanks for your consistent work it gets me excited to go home and fire up my mister.
Ability to overclock PLUS almost 100% compatibility is what I personally want from FPGA emulators. It's like the best from both worlds of real hardware and software emulation. There are so many laggy games on that platform, so that would be very cool.
This makes me wonder if Robert is able to allocate the last unused FPGA estate to make the dismal N64 texture cache much larger to allow for MiSTer hi-res patch
That would be cool. But are there even any n64 emulators that emulate larger texture cache in LLE, and ROMs with larger texture sizes? I dont believe anyone has tried it since retexturing has greater upscale with HLE.
I feel like if he could do *something* to that end, there would be limits to the support the MiSTer could give that many existing texture packs would exceed. I know nothing, though. Maybe he does it, and we can have 4K textures. It wouldn't be the first time that he pulled a rabbit out of a hat 😂
we have plenty of memory available in the core, so a larger texture memory would be possible. The issue is that 4k textures will not fit, so we would need special texture packs only for mister. At best we can get e.g. 128*128 instead of 32*32. As the render resolution is 240p anyway, this should be good enough.
never tried the turbo core... is that high res mode something that upgrades the rendering reaolution to something that the original hardware was not able to, like 1080p?
The game itself (Hybrid Heaven) has a high resolution mode, which runs at 480i instead of 240p, but performance is worse so it's a trade off. Other N64 games do the same thing, like Shadowman and Rogue Squadron. The turbo core just has enhances performance over the normal core, including but not limited to games running in those (relatively) high res modes.
I thought Clean HDMI mode ran progressive rather than interlaced. At least some of the footage in this video, though, looked interlaced. Do you know if 480p works in DV1 for the RT4K?
N64 core makes you revisit games for a better experience. I've been goofing around with a usb arcade stick for Killer instinct gold as the n64 controller wasn't ideal for fighters.
@@VideoGameEsoterica Saturn Pad is very specialized, Playstation had a very generalized Pad (well dual shock prior to that I would say they had the weakest controller) and the N64 was going for unique experiences. I find when I emulate a Playstation games it is mostly one standard button layout with a modern controller since they are very similar. Saturn I have a fighter and an everything else layout on a modern controller or 6 button controller if I am feeling like getting one out. N64 I use multiple controllers and about a half dozen configurations for the games. I think this is the best way I can explain how I feel about these controllers.
If I had to vote for one perfect non analog controller Saturn gets my vote. Best general analog controller? Dual shock. Best modern analog I use every day for captures when on PC? Series X
@ I guess it’s because of EU standards, but it’s still pretty weird. We had our first widescreen tv shows in 1997 here in Finland, and you couldn’t even buy new 4:3 models after the millenium. Pretty much all tv series had moved over to 16:9 by then. News programs and commercials stayed at 4:3 for a long time though. It used a system which would change the tv’s aspect ratio setting automatically. (And it would be letterboxed on a 4:3 set)

I need to try out Star Wars Episode 1 Racer on the turbo core. It runs at 480i by default but it has a 240p mode that runs a lot smoother. I wonder what difference it would make to the high res mode
I recomend the DC version for consoles, best port of the game imo, or the GOG version for PC, the game really needs low latency to remain enjoyable, so skip the modern ports on consoles, as they have added latency, stick to the N64, DC or GOG versions, also recomend SW: Racer Revenge on PS2, a great sequel, again, needs to be real hardware imo to retain the super snappy & fast paced controls the game has. (and you also have SW Super Bombad Racing, a less serious pod based kart racer, which I also like, sadly the DC version was canceled)
@Wobble2007 Ep 1 Racer on modern consoles has added latency? I've got it, and it's 60fps and the most playable version of the game that I've ever played. I'm sure it's better on PC, but there nothing wrong with the PS4/Xbox port?
@@n64fan60 Well not enough to bother most to be fair, but going from 0ms bare-metal DC or GOG port on Windows 7 to 20-30ms on the Switch or PS4 is noticable to me (it maybe lower latency on the PS4 Pro, in which case I'd like a physical copy on the PS4), especially on a CRT monitor, and double especially for a twitch racer, though YMMV.
@Wobble2007 I think if you're getting 30ms of lag then there's something wrong. IMO there's no reason why the PS4/Xbox version would produce more lag. The reason why PC is better is because you can play it in higher resolution, not lag. If you can play it at 120fps or whatever on PC then sure, the controls will be more responsive than PS4. If you're playing at 60fps on PC, there's no reason why you'd have less lag than PS4, assuming you use the same screen for both. You're just limited to 1080p on the console, but not the PC. This is to say nothing of how consoles are more optimised than PC in terms of "running from the bare metal", or that Ep 1 Racer is a 25 year old game that drops zero frames even on Switch.
Quake 2 is actually smoother with the Expansion Pack. Spiderman 64 might be as well. As for other games, Shadow Man & Indiana Jones 64 were not actually slower on HI-REZ. Also, NFL Quarterback Club & All Star Baseball -games series, -where Expansion Pack increases texture detail to games that already run HI-REZ, no additional drops. But mostly, developers did not spend enough time to optimize game(s) for extra memory. Hybrid Heaven has the best turn/menu based battle system, if you ask me. Just a blumber that while it never drops below solid 30fps on LO -REZ, it's a slide show with the Expansion Pack, as support for HI-REZ was literally added in last minute.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I was wondering, is there any reason why the N64 is (relatively) easy to do? Like, could be one day have the same facilitated process for PS1 games?
Yeah, I passed this one up back in the day because of how the battles looked. The game definitely looked interesting, but N64 games cost £50-£60, which was too much for me to spend on a punt at that time.
Almost could pass for an early DC game, never played it before, looks like it's worth a look, this is why I love FPGA, you get the bare-metal acuracy, along with perfect RGB & 60 FPS. (or at least locked 30), I wonder if it would be good to have 3 frame lock modes for the N64 core, 30/45/60 (good/better/best), depending on the best performance the game gets, as it's really the solid consistant locked FPS that matters the most. Who knows, one day we may be playing N64 games in a 1:1 FPGA core with 120 FPS.
Is it just me, or does the image, rather the edges and especially while moving, look VERY "jaggy"? IMO this picture does not look good at all, and I'm not saying this because it's the N64 ;) Playing on real hardware with upscaling.
