That nice to see an Ohmer fare register fully set up and working! They were very complex on the parts level, but simple enough to use. There was a wide variety of cool fare register systems back in the day, and that one is probably the most impressive looking.

My goodness, I never thought I'd see the day. Saw the thumbnail and went "HEY WAIT THAT'S 418." Was not disappointed. 717 has the same system but the paint looks a bit different. So glad to SCRM get some coverage and love. Lived near there for 20+ years and the collection is amazing. Nothing is quite the same as those P.E. air whistles, either.
Imagine beeing that one passenger sitting under this "cash register" for the whole route hearing *kaching* thousand times per day as he travels to the work... every day
Limes aside, this is a really cool piece of machinery - the remote control adding machine! I have worked produce stalls in farmers' markets. Chatting with customers while totaling orders in my head and making correct change, rapidly, because someone's waiting, is tiring and I've had people ask how I manage to do it (practice!). Someone was smart enough to figure out that the conductor, who also presumably had to do all the customer service and be the face of the transit company, would be more efficient and more honest with this clever gadget. Thanks for sharing!
I can share that pain of farmers markets when trying to make change out of an apron to multiple customers at once. Not everyone pays digital/card and it is a mental challenge. (Making transactions in whole dollars really did simplify things for sure.)
@@drewbarker8504 yes!! whole dollars are great friends. I actually preferred cash - but only because my experience is from several years back when digital was new. Squares and such devices gremlin out when I'm in the vicinity and fixing them is not my strong point..... lol

So simple, so stupid in the grand scale of things, but SO COOL! A great example of the sort of thing the GP doesn't think twice about, but we appreciate it in all its glory!
Unrelated, Hyce, but someday for we who look at diesel electrics and reflexively say "GP-40s, it's all GP-40s" could there someday be a 101 video on modern locomotive taxonomy? It's kind of an embarrassing condition to be in.
I believe Southern Plains Railfan has a vid on spotting GE vs EMD features, it definitely got a bit harder at a glance when EMD started doing wide nose/safety cabs. As for differentiating EMD SDs vs GPs, SDs all have 6 axles, and GPs have 4. You'll rarely see any GPs anywhere except shortlines these days, and theyre almost exclusively used as switchers if a class one has them. I know my local class 2 still uses GP9s, but they arent usually moving more than a dozen cars, so a bigger engine is overkill for them.

Kudos to the conductor making change when fares were not nice round numbers but instead were 67 or 81. It's a skill that has all but disappeared.
