A lot of people miss that she says “he’s gonna say it’s love, he never called it what it was til we were dead and gone and buried. Check the pulse and come back swearing it’s the same after 3 months in the grave”. So he didn’t tell her he loved her until after he broke it off with her, left her for 3 months and then came crawling back using love to suck her back in. That’s why she felt shame. It’s not referring to a 3 month relationship.

Want to make sure you know she wrote this when she was 21, as a stream of consciousness. She is 34 now. The lyric video you just watched was her re-recording it for her Taylor's Version. So, she saw the future: she got older, but Jake's girlfriends have stayed the same age.
Also, he lived in Brooklyn. So, "Your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones" was just they hung out there and that is where he broke her heart. She is a poet.

I'm a new Swifty without the advantage of having heard the short version first, and dove headfirst into this version. I was drawn in immediately (I had a lover from update NY, romantic fall vibes, lots of fun in the city, etc, didn't end well after 9 1/2 years), and didn't take any pauses so I was a mess by the end. Someone said she writes like a knife, and each section just built on the last with no chill at all. It still doesn't feel like 10 minutes. Huge fan now. 💖💖

they dated on and off for a while (not for very long, publicly, at least). the relationship seemed to be pretty good for a couple months until jake didnt go to taylors 21st birthday party even though his own close friends showed up. this led to them breaking up and taylor has a song about it called "the moment i knew". i think after that he kept going back to her and they may have tried dating again but it lasted like a month because taylor - rightfully - couldnt get over the disrespect.
And then that’s how we got We Are Never Getting Back Together. “Shortly after a friend of Swift's ex-boyfriend walked into the recording studio and spoke of rumors he heard that Swift and her former flame were reuniting. After the friend left, her producers asked Swift to elaborate on the details of the relationship, which she described as "break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst". The reference at the end is to the 3 parts she went through in the song. She has the beautiful memories when they would dance in the kitchen “down the stairs”…the memories of the “wind in her hair” when riding in the car.. and “the sacred prayer” is the promise to be with each other. She’s saying it all happened and you know it like I know it was special what we had.

I went to the eras tour twice and the first night when she sang this song I fell down a rabbit hole of memories and i sobbed very hard and quietly for about 20 minutes 😂. the second night i thought i’d be able to actually enjoy the song……. it happened again.

Yes, so many people think this was only a 3 month relationship...But they had an on and off relationship (after their shorter public relationship had ended) that went on for so much longer, that is why she is saying he kept her a secret after that. And that is what she is talking about in her other song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," that it was a vicious cycle. Like she says "I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed too" And after they ended he spent time in the media downplaying their relationship and that is why she is saying she remember it ALL TO WELL over and over.
And Brooklyn broke is a double meaning. His Brooklyn aka him, his world and society circles broke her (He lived in Brooklyn and she talks about his society circles in "IBYTAM") aka he and his community broke my skin and bones, also with the double meaning of “Brooklyn Broke” meaning wealthy people who act like they are too good for it and pretend to be broke (think struggling artist who actually isn’t struggling). This matches a lot of "IBYTAM" (this song honestly puts a lot of context into Red as an album) where she has that angry sounding rant towards the end about the indie music concerts, organic shoes, and the million dollar couch. It also matches “indie record that’s much cooler than mine” from WANEGBT.

The part that hits me hardest every time is "I'll forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to." I had an ex that I could go weeks or even months without thinking about, but then when I did, it was always romanticized in my head and all the terribly horrific moments were erased from the forefront of my mind, so I would end up reconnecting with him. It was a vicious cycle that Taylor captivated so eloquently in a single sentence.
That line was genius. She has a gift of bringing true experiences to life in a relatable way that has us all connecting to it.

not sure if someone else already answered this- "down the stairs" is one of the versions of the chorus in the song: the first was "you almost ran the red cause you were looking over at me, wind in my hair i was there I remember it all too well", then "dancing round the kitchen in the refrigerator light, down the stairs I was there, I remember it all too well", and then finally "you kept my like.a secret but I kept you like an oath, sacred prayer and we'd swear to remember it all too well". so she's just repeating the "wind in my hair/down the stairs/sacred prayer, I was there" at the end, which to me is just replaying those memories over and over. The outro to this song is one of her very best, I think it mesmerizes everyone the first time!

Then I'd match up "Cornelia Street" and "The Archer", for another contrast. Can't go wrong with any of the City of Lovers songs IMO, but as far as two best songs, Ivy is right!
Brooklyn Broke is a slang term to define someone who has a lot of money but still dresses and acts like they're broke
But, Jakes sister had a house in Brooklyn, perhaps the one where she left her scarf.. so this line can have a double meaning referencing both the first meaning of the term Brooklyn broke but also Brooklyn and the memory’s and time spent with Jake in Brooklyn
And we know Taylor loves a double meaning and she loves combining idioms (I dress to kill my time).

Yes. Those two relationships formed Taylor as a person and unfortunately damaged her self-esteem and self-confidence a lot. When Taylor was 32 she released would’ve could’ve should’ve the song is track 19 on the album midnights (the ages Taylor and John where when they dated) This song is a take on the relationship from a Taylor who is now the same age as John was
So dear John is from the perspective of a 19 year old Taylor and would’ve could’ve should’ve is from the perspective of a 32 yer old Taylor. You should definitely do Dear John but then do would’ve could’ve should’ve right after. Both those songs are important in order to understand Taylor and her songwriting

I've been told that 'brooklyn broke' is actually a phrase for someone rich who dresses like a schlub... like Jake G. They're too cool to wear designer or nice clothes and look like they picked up stuff at a thrift store but could totally buy whatever they want. But brooklyn as an attitude could be synonymous with someone cutting, harsh, tough, or too cool to be with her. SO his Brooklyn attitude broke her.

Someone might have commented already, but if you look back you’ll notice “Fuck the Patriarchy” in quotes. The rhythm here (which I love) I think makes people miss her saying “keychain” right after. He has a keychain that illustrates he’s presenting as one image (a feminist) but he’s actually of the narcissistic variety who targets vulnerable women (like young women)

Confused on your interpretation of “I’m a soldier whose returning half her weight” - she’s describing their relationship as a war and she’s a soldier who went into war and after being in war (and being beaten down by the conditions - including not having food) is returning half her weight.

I think one of the core issues, revealed and emphasised by the ATW10 was the age gap, specifically that he used it against her when they broke up "You said if we had been closer in age, maybe it would've been fine, and that made me want to die. The idea you had of me, who was she? A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel whose shine reflects on you" - not trying to judge, some relationships with a large age gap work out, but that's the exception not the rule and less significant past our 20s, when you're likely in the same range of life experience. So to begin with, it's icky to me for a 29 year old to choose to date a 20 year old *despite* her age... yet claim that was the issue when breaking up? Excuse me but was the age gap different when you chose to date her AND get back together again??? AND THEN "the punch line goes 'I'll get older, but your lovers stay my age'"...
Sorry but I didn't see enough in the comments emphasising how icky the age gap was. Taylor has always come across as extremely mature and most of her piers weren't her age when she was becoming super famous, but I find it icky that she had two relationships with men significantly older who chose to be with her, and noone (as in the public) blinked an eye. John Mayor who was 32 dated Taylor at 19. And she was a fan of his growing up. And I think it's notable that after those two experiences so young the few people she's dated have been within a few years or the same age as her. It's just shitty and icky.
