I'd definitely consider Pikmin to be an RTS if you're looking to complete the game as fast as possible, as you have to plan out how you're going to get all the fruit in the most efficient amount of time, having to utilize the walking function for the other two captains while your own captain moves faster when walking is definitely a point to consider for those looking to collect all the fruit.

I love both of these games for similar reasons. These comparisons are very spot on although I think you could define SC as a rt-puzzle game as well just with many possible solutions. It is a simi broad genre.
I think you kinda miss the point of pikmins time limit tho, it is not just a push forward but also a bit like Sc's macro mechanics another thing to manage improve mastery like any other game mechanic that is easy to do by itself but adds challenge overall.

Pikmin 3's biggest flaw is being way too easy, in 1 and 2 every single time I faced a tough enemy I was scared because I knew if I screwed up all of my Pikmin could die in a blink of an eye, you always had to be on your toes to make sure to limit the Pikmin losses ( or prevent them completely ) there were many situations were you could be annihilated by going without thinking into a dangerous situation, in Pikmin 3 there is no tough enemy and you pretty much CAN'T lose all of your Pikmin because of a wrong decision you made... The bosses tho became way more epic, especially that thing in the swamp with a strawberry on top, that one was hard and epic!

The 2nd pikmin was the only one where the timer doesn't matter. I loved how 3 was both less stressful than 1, yet there was a reason to keep progressing (although it definitely ended a lot faster than 2 did, and that's not even counting all the end game content). I hope the next one has mechanics similar to 3, but not with a limited amount of resources. That way, some days you can be gathering food, farming monsters to get more pikmin, or advancing the game (also I hope it is a lot longer and harder. I hate the tough bosses but I also love the gameplay so much!). And of course I also would love more co-op, not just in mini-missions (which are fine, but again, felt like minimal content), and/or battle modes. I honestly haven't watched the whole video yet but I love Pikmin!

Duuude. Thank goodness for the algorithm. I’ll binge my way through your channel. I’m designing an RTS right now and I can already tell, that this will be very inspiring.

This was very interesting. Treating a genre as a spectrum and then comparing two games in that genre that are arguably at opposite ends is very revealing.
I’m afraid to suggest that Starcraft 2 is lacking in the strategy you describe because i know there’s unit counter picks to whatever the enemy builds. I think this counter pick design can be best summarized as a complex rock-paper-scissor type game. Meaning that at the higher elos, the game is less about strategy because there’s a meta game, and the game because more about execution. Im afraid to suggest this because i don’t have a lot of experience with Starcraft 2 but i think this idea has merit. I’ve seen this in overwatch especially in the pro scene where the meta takes over, even when counter picking can be viable because that counter pick demands better execution. This makes it so that the team has to decide on where theyre confident enough to execute the counter picks properly, or follow the path of least resistance by playing the meta comp in a mirror match up- and it still be about execution with the knowledge that the meta comp is the easiest of the two choices to have reliable value in the game.
I’m much more confident in speaking about pikmin 3. i believe you missed the main rts element of pikmin, which is about maximizing your days. You’re absolutely correct, each puzzle, in my opinion by definition can only be solved one way. Where i think you miss understood is that the level isn’t this little puzzle. The area is a giant place with multiple routes. This can be better explained by the choices a single captain has. Having one captain control the pikmin can be very limiting while counter intuitively it can hyper focus the players attention. What i mean is that with one captain- there’s only so much you can do. Making the amount of choices available to the player trying to maximize their day small. Pikmin 3 offers three captains you can control, making the most optimal solution in controlling these captains to maximize your day *that* much more complex to solve. When you have only one captain to worry about, it’s very clear if something is working or not, while when you have three captains, it’s a lot harder to see.
I don’t really have a point other than to say i think you missed these two points in your comparison

just saying in the first pikmin there's far more strategy because you have 30 days and 26ish parts to get, and there's fixed/respawning resources. therefore you need to decide how to plan or you might lose the entire game by putting yourself in a time trap. it's quite fun and feels very different than the other 2, it's much "faster" because you have basically no time to waiste (espically once you're good and trying to speedrun it)
and then in the 2nd there's dungeons which are a cool replacement for the time limit because you can wipe, so its a little like an rts and rpg where you need to plan and stock up before diving in and possibly losing everything

I noticed that in all of the Pikmin footage you never had your Pikmin do a target-locked swarm attack. Was that just a coincidence or do you just not use that when you play? On some enemies in that video it's really inefficient to throw pikmin one at a time at them.

Pikmin and Starcraft are far and away my two favorite franchises. Beyond that the recent Fireaxis entries to the XCOM series and Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Would love to hear from others who feel the same way about what other games they deeply enjoy.

the drawback of starcraft is some strategy is lost to those who can simply click their keyboard fastest.

I loved this! Pikmin is my favorite video game franchise, and it was astonishing to see someone compare it to the likes of StarCraft. You could probably make a whole series out of comparing widely different games with similar genres. Like, Metroid Prime vs. Call of Duty, or Breath of the Wild (when that releases) vs. Skyrim. I dunno, I think it would be fun to compare more games that seem different on the surface but aren't so different when you dig a bit deeper.

Great series. Stumbled upon the last video randomly, will watch the whole series. In contrast with your take, I actually appreciate the way Wings of Liberty campaign was introducing mechanics and units. It was never ovewhelming, and rarely long enough intro of something I already know to bother me. Think it was actually quite a nice balance between making the game accessible to new players, but also not annoying to the returning "veterans".

Another game that tows the line between genres: Myth 2. Real time strategy/tactical game. Oh how I wish people would still talk of that game.

I watch your videos not because I want to know about some games. But Rather to listen to your complex thought process and philosophical reasons and a higher understand of life being applied to video games.
I'm thinking about my decisions and my life as I'm watching your videos to find an echo, and I find out more helpful than even those "philosophy" videos that's specific on what I'm trying to understand (such as videos about finding the right person etc....)
Can you suggest me one of your videos that would best show case your talent that's the deepest when it comes to understand, dissecting an issue or subject matter?
By the way, the ONLY reason your videos aren't getting more views is because MAJORITY of the people are WAYY too stupid to understand a minute of your amazing thought process, they'd rather spend the time watching something stupid such as shocking fake news... on another thought, they probably are too afraid to watch videos that have deep meanings because they are also too weak to accept the hard truth of life even tho they subconsciously know the hard truth.
