Kevin, talk to a plumber, and ask for water heater boxes. They are BIG. When you go from a large gear to a small gear, you increase your speed and decrease your torque.
Biggest change I would make.. make it a straight trailer that you can tow from the bike of your choosing! Just figure out a hinge system that can be belted to a standard bike..

One thing i would add inside of the cardboard shelter as input is a small first aid pack that is a light weight one like those small red bags that are stuffed with a lot of things, so that way if a person had any minor injuries they could treat themselves. For one example they get stung by a stinging insect they could use a sting remedy wipe to numb the pain then use a band aid. Another example for in case they get small cuts and so on to be able to treat them with disinfecting wipes then use a band aid or a bandage with gauze. Thought i would throw this idea into the mix!

Absolutely amazing! Wonderfully genius. This would help the homeless so they can’t take their home. What about making the unit out of pink insulation, paint. I love to build, create. If you are in the Michigan area I would love help create micro mobile tiny homes. Needs a micro toilet, with baggies or bucket and noodle, collapsible sink micro fold down table, 96 wide by 96 long flip out panel table, ventilation from used screens, clothes under bed, screens on windows. Tiny BLUETTI or the orange company forgot the name solar unit so no one breaks in and steals from person using. Also maybe have that person receive the unit help make it too.
Would you be able to make something for a single woman with a safe space for a baby to sleep in until they can access appropriate help. Add appropriate information leaflets on where people can get further help.

I would suggest making it about 10 inches taller, 8 inches wider, and 8 inches longer... I would put 4 computer hard drive fans (2 in top & 2 in bottom)... Screen in the portholes... Either pvc or thin wood slats for structure... Outer lights and/or reflectors to be seen at night on the road... If possible, make the whole thing out of foam board like the door to help keep it better insulated for winter... 6 inches of storage space under the floor for food and clothes... I also would tweak the gear ratio to move faster with less pedaling... A few more shelves or some small cabinets... Some lockout brakes for over night would be good... As far as your cup holder idea, I think that would be good as well... A small light weight drop down table would be a good idea as well... I would put this idea out there to get funding to help cover your building cost...
I’m with you on the rebuild. I would also invest on the fat tires and make the wheel frame better and add H-E-B motors to help your pedaling around and think the Jackery could stand to have its own housing. Give the build a skeleton and make sure that you….. never mind. Your build is looking like a 2 thousand dollar project. But it would be worth it plus.

I can see thumb tacks being helpful in this application also a roll of reflexive foam roll would change the inside aesthetics and insulate at the same time. Pop bottles make a nice corrugated roof that provides light.
If you want to do things like this in the future, go to a furniture store that sells a lot of recliners. The recliner boxes are generally double or triple walled and are about 42"×42"×42".
Cool video I think I’ll build one for myself just to go camping in the desert. Very good idea. I think mine will be made out of some plywood though. It’s gotta be a little bit stronger.😊😎🌵

I thought about resourcing the old bikes. I know our police department donates old unclaimed bikes. Also you are brilliant you know. This design is so clever as have all of your designs have been. My suggestion for this build is to move the battery please. I would not want the battery by my head while I sleep. It can't be good.
@@chrisv6008 I know the city. The whole Kitchener-Waterloo region, which includes the cities of Cambridge and Waterloo. The Region has a population of over half a million. For a population of that size, the homeless is growing at an "Out of control." pace. We do not build enough dwellings for the growing epidemic of the working population who work 40 hrs a week and cannot afford the rent or mortgage.
Hi Kevin, Another awesome project. I know you wanted the build to be free, but I think you could add some break lights. They make auto sensing led ones. And a slow moving vehicle sign. It’s an orange triangle here in the United States. Not sure what’s required in Canada. Also, a headlight. Other than that, I think the build is awesome. The liquid rubber seems like a great product. Okay Kevin this is a great idea. It's a great idea. I think the front the duck bill should be higher so you can more comfortably ride I think you should have a little bit of an overhang in the back to keep the water from coming inside. And I think you need a basket in the front for carrying their there fast foods in probably mirrors on the handlebars so they can see traffic better I don't know what it's like in Canada but you may have to have some sort of Lighting systems or reflectors. The one guy mentioned handicap. Wonder if you could design one to be pushed from the front, sort of like a walker
Kevin, I want to commend you for your work in helping the homeless population. My spouse and I see many homeless patients at the hospital where we work, and hear so many of our coworkers talk about how more needs to be done to help them, without doing anything to mitigate the actual problem. But you on the other hand are showing actual viable possible solutions which can be used out in the real world. And that’s truly exciting to see that. My hope is for every homeless person we can help get to a better place, eventually they can look back on the entire experience as nothing more than the equivalent of, “a bad camping trip”. Keep up the good work, and making all of us who watch your videos proud of you. 😇
Awesome! I didn’t read all the comments but will probably repeat ideas. I think having reflectors on this for safety would be a good idea. A screen on the front porthole to keep the mosquitoes out would be nice. You didn’t look comfortable peddling so it would be nice if the overhead overhang was higher. A rear view mirror for safety as well. A cup holder is a good idea. Some bikes have removable tire pumps on them. Would be a good idea to have a small tire pump. Even a basket on the front would be handy. Since people thought the inside ought to be prettier, you could always pick up discarded paint at transfer stations/garbage dumps. You have some great ideas!
Foam board only maybe. Four walls, flat roof with a slope for rain, very sturdy and warm and light. Easy to glue together and mass produce. Nice job, Kevin!! God bless 🙏
leave the bike with the gears and make it a trailer solves the turning radius and the gearing and you can set it up unhook and go. just make a bolt on hitch for people who already have a bike

Would adding some side vents towards the bottom of the house help with ventilation during the summer to keep things cooler, and when say it starts getting colder you can close the vents up to help lock heat in.

I was looking at my room going "Oh, I could build a little desk there", since it's a small room and storage is always an issue... Funnily enough, cardboard is going to be the perfect thing to test out how it would fit in the room. It really is pretty underrated.

I think security might be an issue but rather than heavier structure and locks maybe a noise or light deterrent, a panic button kind of thing? You could set it if you leave or have it ready if you are inside asleep. Great project.
Great idea, right up until someone jacks it from another...It was almost a gimme that some of the "consultants" were sizing up the Jackery and whatnot. Had Chris not been there, it wouldve ended in a foot race im sure. I get it, not all homeless are like that, but ive seen them steal whatever they can when the ppl go to sleep or pass out. As much as I love this thing, the part that I wondered is that in troubling places it can quite easily be cut open and destroyed by vandals. Of course, it's made of cardboard so it'll be easy to rebuild. I feel like you could do two layers with a layer of foam between, and the inside could be fully coated in a fire retardant for smokers who smoke lying down. The underside could also do with a coat of water proofing and the chain can be captured in plastic tubes to keep water and mud off of it. It doesn't need to have lots of gears but have it geared low. I feel like the inside could be a couple inches wide or a few inches taller, and the whole thing needs safety features like brakes and lights. I don't think stuff like cooking features and the like would work because those add cost and complexity that would not bode well to mass produce these to a city or investor.
Kudos Kevin, once again, this is GENIUS!!!!! If you’re still looking for suggestions on how it can be improved upon, I can only think of maybe two. First would be to replace the light in the corner with an LED light strip powered with a simple USB plug, which can be purchased for roughly $5-USD at a store called Five Below (and they have a website). And second would be if you made the shelter solely on the bike trailer separately from the bike which is towing it. That way if it were to be towed with a Dahon folder bike, the bike itself could be folded up for storage and placed inside the unit if the occupant of the shelter needed to go to work for example and didn’t want to worry about it getting stolen. But you’re doing an OUTSTANDING JOB as always. I had never heard of liquid rubber before watching your video. 😇
Are you gonna do the bottom end of the trailer? The flooring if you flip it up coat to bottom too, because that plywood ain't gonna last long if you don't coat it with something.
I love this idea, I made a custom out of cardboard and this right here I was thinking to make as a camper tent. this really is genius. I too have a power station and solar panels.
Kevin you've hit a nerve here. I've been reading the comments and there's certainly interest out there. I think the best component is the fact it can be moved. It doesn't need to be ridden great distances, but does need to provide internal sleeping space. So many city governments tare encampments down and destroy the shelters. With yours they can put their belongings inside and ride away ! Great job from a great guy. 😊👍🇨🇦

You should use the Silverboard insulation with the rubber coat. It would be light weight and durable. You could also use expanding foam to join it together. It would be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

I love the idea of cardboard but would spray foam it and shape it like a baseball cap and use a old ebike and trailer to build your masterpiece! You’re the best Kevin!
51:28 agreed. Something else, I think you could easily make a "popup" but do it vertical so that you COULD stand up. And then to waterproof the inner slip of cardboard, use A/C weather striping, you can probably pull that off of old A/C units. And since this guy is talking about morning routine, I'd suggest finding an old innertube, and cutting out the Schrader valve, get a 4 inch section of PVC pipe, paint it black, and install a shower head on one end with a fill screw on the pipe, then, you fill it up 2/3rd of the way with water, and pressurize the tube with a bicycle pump, and wait till the afternoon, so the water will be heated by the sun, in a 5 or 6 foot section, you have enough hot water for a quick shower. No electricity needed, that's what we did in the bigger camps, especially if you have access to a lot of dumpsters.
Fun Fact: The original owner of Dominos Pizza was the one who invented corrugated cardboard so he could safely deliver pizzas without damaging them. The company took his invention to heart, and now makes their pizza with a cardboard crust.
I think its a brilliant idea and very cheap or at a push free as most homeless people sleep in cardboard boxes but this idea means they are safer at night and less likely to get sick
A couple of thoughts :-) When you cut the cardboard out for the door you could have just cut it part way through (or creased it deeply and carefully) so it could be folded back around inside or outside at 90 degrees (a couple or 3 bends and then glued - perhaps over a couple of your triangular stiffeners - making a stronger 'door frame'. I wish i could send you a drawing of what I mean! Also I would suggest using ordinary wood glue to build up thicker flatter layers to create your taller walls out of. And perhaps add some of your triangular stiffeners to the outside so they do not intrude into the inner space. The use of curves is a wonderful idea and if you can find the type of cardboard that looks like the forgot to add the outside piece of paper on one side (which rolls up SO easily) you could glue several layers together over a curved form - with plain thin card stock in between to make a high curved roof so you can ride your bike more upright and perhaps even get the extra height people wanted without making the sides much taller :-) Keep up the good work!
I've got an idea. You can swap out the front wheel with one of those power assist wheels to help you go up hills easier. And use a solor generator to recharge the battery.

Epic build. If you ever build another dont cut the frame. Save the everything from the rear axel, hub, cassette, and cut off the spokes and rim. Then add a sprocket to the axel on the other side of the cassette. This way you can keep the derailleur and be able to shift gears and not be stuck with one. And when its finished please give it to me because this way my idea I gave you.
In the arizona heat all that hot glue would melt, so maybe use a different adhesive, also to find free material or remants of wall paper and make the inside looks more pleasing since it's so small, it's not great to be staring at carboard. Also most people can't afford those solar powered generator but it's a great touch as it would power it for a very long time as long as it don't fall apart.
Nice. Consider extend the rear roof so there's a mini-veranda. Also a park brake seems almost essential for nights to me. IBefore rubberising the Mk2 it might also be worth considering giving the outside a few layers of paper mâché (ie newspaper with wood glue or similar) to make the structure's strength more integrated.

structural insulation board - it's $30 for 4 x 8. So you could get 6 of those maybe? More space, more insulation - easier to build...

My hope is for every homeless person we can help get to a better place, eventually they can look back on the entire experience as nothing more than the equivalent of, “a bad camping trip”. Awesome! I didn’t read all the comments but will probably repeat ideas. I think having reflectors on this for safety would be a good idea. A screen on the front porthole to keep the mosquitoes out would be nice. You didn’t look comfortable peddling so it would be nice if the overhead overhang was higher. A rear view mirror for safety as well. A cup holder is a good idea. Some bikes have removable tire pumps on them. Would be a good idea to have a small tire pump. Even a basket on the front would be handy. Since people thought the inside ought to be prettier, you could always pick up discarded paint at transfer stations/garbage dumps. You have some great ideas!

Foam board only maybe. Four walls, flat roof with a slope for rain, very sturdy and warm and light. Easy to glue together and mass produce.

leave the bike with the gears and make it a trailer solves the turning radius and the gearing and you can set it up unhook and go. just make a bolt on hitch for people who already have a bike

For your window a little shrink wrap would seal and still allow light in!
Would adding some side vents towards the bottom of the house help with ventilation during the summer to keep things cooler, and when say it starts getting colder you can close the vents up to help lock heat in.

I was looking at my room going "Oh, I could build a little desk there", since it's a small room and storage is always an issue... Funnily enough, cardboard is going to be the perfect thing to test out how it would fit in the room. It really is pretty underrated.

I think security might be an issue but rather than heavier structure and locks maybe a noise or light deterrent, a panic button kind of thing? You could set it if you leave or have it ready if you are inside asleep. Great project.

Great idea, right up until someone jacks it from another...It was almost a gimme that some of the "consultants" were sizing up the Jackery and whatnot. Had Chris not been there, it wouldve ended in a foot race im sure. I get it, not all homeless are like that, but ive seen them steal whatever they can when the ppl go to sleep or pass out. Your hearts in the right spot Kevin, but its not as simple as a shelter. Love what you're doing 😊 Just my opinion from Florida

As much as I love this thing, the part that I wondered is that in troubling places it can quite easily be cut open and destroyed by vandals. Of course, it's made of cardboard so it'll be easy to rebuild. I feel like you could do two layers with a layer of foam between, and the inside could be fully coated in a fire retardant for smokers who smoke lying down. The underside could also do with a coat of water proofing and the chain can be captured in plastic tubes to keep water and mud off of it. It doesn't need to have lots of gears but have it geared low. I feel like the inside could be a couple inches wide or a few inches taller, and the whole thing needs safety features like brakes and lights. I don't think stuff like cooking features and the like would work because those add cost and complexity that would not bode well to mass produce these to a city or investor.
Kudos Kevin, once again, this is GENIUS!!!!! If you’re still looking for suggestions on how it can be improved upon, I can only think of maybe two. First would be to replace the light in the corner with an LED light strip powered with a simple USB plug, which can be purchased for roughly $5-USD at a store called Five Below (and they have a website). And second would be if you made the shelter solely on the bike trailer separately from the bike which is towing it. That way if it were to be towed with a Dahon folder bike, the bike itself could be folded up for storage and placed inside the unit if the occupant of the shelter needed to go to work for example and didn’t want to worry about it getting stolen. But you’re doing an OUTSTANDING JOB as always. I had never heard of liquid rubber before watching your video. 😇

Are you gonna do the bottom end of the trailer? The flooring if you flip it up coat to bottom too, because that plywood ain't gonna last long if you don't coat it with something.

I think the best component is the fact it can be moved. It doesn't need to be ridden great distances, but does need to provide internal sleeping space.
So many city governments tare encampments down and destroy the shelters. With yours they can put their belongings inside and ride away !

You should use the Silverboard insulation with the rubber coat. It would be light weight and durable. You could also use expanding foam to join it together. It would be warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

I have made something similar.. but i layered the cardboard (4 layers), keeping it lite weight still yet more solid.. for my bike camping needs..
If you use that spray adhesive, you could easily double the thickness of your cardboard which would add a lot of rigidity and insulation.
51:28 agreed. Something else, I think you could easily make a "popup" but do it vertical so that you COULD stand up. And then to waterproof the inner slip of cardboard, use A/C weather striping, you can probably pull that off of old A/C units. And since this guy is talking about morning routine, I'd suggest finding an old innertube, and cutting out the Schrader valve, get a 4 inch section of PVC pipe, paint it black, and install a shower head on one end with a fill screw on the pipe, then, you fill it up 2/3rd of the way with water, and pressurize the tube with a bicycle pump, and wait till the afternoon, so the water will be heated by the sun, in a 5 or 6 foot section, you have enough hot water for a quick shower. No electricity needed, that's what we did in the bigger camps, especially if you have access to a lot of dumpsters.

Box springs for sure! The hardwood ones are impossible to dismantle- I have tried! They're also lightweight, but really strong!
Fun Fact: The original owner of Dominos Pizza was the one who invented corrugated cardboard so he could safely deliver pizzas without damaging them. The company took his invention to heart, and now makes their pizza with a cardboard crust.
I think its a brilliant idea and very cheap or at a push free as most homeless people sleep in cardboard boxes but this idea means they are safer at night and less likely to get sick

A couple of thoughts :-) When you cut the cardboard out for the door you could have just cut it part way through (or creased it deeply and carefully) so it could be folded back around inside or outside at 90 degrees (a couple or 3 bends and then glued - perhaps over a couple of your triangular stiffeners - making a stronger 'door frame'. I wish i could send you a drawing of what I mean! Also I would suggest using ordinary wood glue to build up thicker flatter layers to create your taller walls out of. And perhaps add some of your triangular stiffeners to the outside so they do not intrude into the inner space. The use of curves is a wonderful idea and if you can find the type of cardboard that looks like the forgot to add the outside piece of paper on one side (which rolls up SO easily) you could glue several layers together over a curved form - with plain thin card stock in between to make a high curved roof so you can ride your bike more upright and perhaps even get the extra height people wanted without making the sides much taller :-) Keep up the good work!
I've got an idea.
You can swap out the front wheel with one of those power assist wheels to help you go up hills easier. And use a solor generator to recharge the battery.

Epic build. If you ever build another dont cut the frame. Save the everything from the rear axel, hub, cassette, and cut off the spokes and rim. Then add a sprocket to the axel on the other side of the cassette. This way you can keep the derailleur and be able to shift gears and not be stuck with one. And when its finished please give it to me because this way my idea I gave you.
You could also put some lights on it so that way they can see you from far away and like at night when you’re peddling down the road
In the arizona heat all that hot glue would melt, so maybe use a different adhesive, also to find free material or remants of wall paper and make the inside looks more pleasing since it's so small, it's not great to be staring at carboard. Also most people can't afford those solar powered generator but it's a great touch as it would power it for a very long time as long as it don't fall apart.
Nice. Consider extend the rear roof so there's a mini-veranda. Also a park brake seems almost essential for nights to me. IBefore rubberising the Mk2 it might also be worth considering giving the outside a few layers of paper mâché (ie newspaper with wood glue or similar) to make the structure's strength more integrated.
