It's satire. The whole of Candide is about the horrific tragedy of human existence, and showing up the hypocrisy and lack of compassion of the human responses to it.
@SymphonyBrahms I'd agree. Kristin is probably 2nd though. Barbara sings it better, Kristin acts it beautifully. It's really 2 different interpretations both of which are great
Beautifully done. In opera, one normally tries to show the audience that you're the best singer ever. In pop music, you try to show the audience a good time. Chenoweth is grounded in both genres, so we get both presentations- which is a great combination, if it succeeds! (And it does!) That approach also suits Bernstein’s work. Confession: This particular aria always struck me as the love child of Sempre Libera and Der Holle Rache.
I think she is probably like Barbra Streisand. She can do anything she wants with her voice. For me this is a stunning performance. Probably the best version of this song there is.
God. That is one of the hardest arias in Opera, including queen of the night. And she made it seem as easy as a toddler singing twinkle twinkle little star. She's one badass soprano. No doubt.
This is one of the most perfect renditions of any song (aria) ever recorded. Every singer should aspire to this level of virtuosity. To be able to sing this difficult music IN CHARACTER is brilliance beyond anything I can remember. It's opera and vaudeville combined. That's not just talent. It's talent PLUS hard work. Brilliant.
HOW does she transition from one voice to another so seamlessly?!?!?! And every single note perfectly placed while she bounces around and makes comedy. She is a goddess, there's absolutely no other possible explanation.
Just think - I was in the audience at the Philharmonic for this very performance of Candide in 2005. In the orchestra. Kristen is amazing - she has the low notes and the stratospheric notes. And she does the trills and twirls to perfection. And every word is audible, her diction is perfect.
I mean talk about perfection. In complete control of the fiendishly difficult music AND impeccable comedic timing. I consider it an honor to watch this vid!
I've listened to several terrific singers perform this horribly difficult aria but none can rock it like Chenoweth. She is a wonderful coloratura soprano and also a terrific comedic actress. When she gets to the lengthy coloratura section towards the end I FEEL breathless - can't imagine how she does it!! HOW in the world does she do all that "business" AND sing!!???? AMAZING!
The perfect character study of Glinda from Wicked coincidentally...even though the song has nothing to do with her really. This could be a total internal dialogue of who Glinda is in the novel..hiding behind jewels, by appearance vain, airheaded..but slightly canny and self understanding beneath it... A beautiful performance of a classic
It's hard to tell where Chenoweth stops and an actual character begins lmao
I feel like she was chosen for this role just because she would perform thing song amazingly
I think there's a lot of her in this role.

It's satire. The whole of Candide is about the horrific tragedy of human existence, and showing up the hypocrisy and lack of compassion of the human responses to it.
The sheer brilliance of this performance should shut up all discussions about which coloratura soprano sings it best.
Barbara Cook, of course.
@SymphonyBrahms I'd agree. Kristin is probably 2nd though. Barbara sings it better, Kristin acts it beautifully. It's really 2 different interpretations both of which are great
voice and technique aside, i can't think of any other performer as innately entertaining and fun as Kristin, fills any stage she's on
Beautifully done.
YES
She may be the first version of Musical Glinda, but this is definitely the Novel version of Glinda. Phenomenal. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
*fraaaAAAAANCE*
I think she is probably like Barbra Streisand. She can do anything she wants with her voice.
For me this is a stunning performance. Probably the best version of this song there is.
God. That is one of the hardest arias in Opera, including queen of the night. And she made it seem as easy as a toddler singing twinkle twinkle little star. She's one badass soprano. No doubt.
one of the most brilliant performances on TH-cam.
Now I am in Paris
*_FRAaAAAaaaaAancee_*
BTW no one forgot to cut the lace its supposed to be like that so they can switch quickly. it's common practice.
JoJiJoJo THANK YOU
wait where lol
@@e-linamarie They are talking about the lace front on her wig
I believe that's the microphone
That is a small pair of lav microphones so she doesn't have to have an awkward earpiece one - they stick out so the wig doesn't rub on the mics
It's 2024 and I still go back to this performance from time to time. She is so talented! ❤
She is so tiny but with such a big voice 😂
Well you gotta compensate with something
@@derkokos1288 when you’re this talented you don’t need to compensate for anything.
She doesn’t have a big voice, but a well focused and very good trained one. It’s much better than just big
Anyone else up around midnight singing this and praying the neighbors don't hear you? No-one...okay...
Super obsessed with this song now!
Nah i relate! Sometimes i be up till 2 just because one song leads to the next!
Astonishing. Her beauty is only surpassed by her voice and wit.
imagine telling THE PATTI LUPONE to get off the stage. kristen’s power
It was part of the act.
@@SymphonyBrahms fully aware. i'm a theatre major, but also note that not a lot of people would be comfortable in that position
6:52 THE LOOK THE CONDUCTOR GIVES HER OMFG
If you can pull off this aria, you can do anything
In my next life, I want to be Kristin Chenoweth swinging a string of pearls whilst singing
How is she so absolutely perfect in her profession in every way.
She was just born for this.
Everyone gotta love her acting and singing talent
MATERIALL GWORLLLLLLLLLL
And this translates to material worllllllll LOL
She really is a treasure -- both as an actor, singer... but also a person.
This song taught me that even though you are crying, at least you cried surrounded by treasures. And sounds like a perfect goal to me 🤣
This is one of the most perfect renditions of any song (aria) ever recorded. Every singer should aspire to this level of virtuosity. To be able to sing this difficult music IN CHARACTER is brilliance beyond anything I can remember. It's opera and vaudeville combined. That's not just talent. It's talent PLUS hard work. Brilliant.
Don't know this chick. Probably the usual one trick pony like Damrau.
@@yogajedi3337 🤣
I am floored at her skill. Truly and utterly FLOORED.
I love everything about this look- the curls, the makeup, the 50s prom dress, the way the corset fits, those shoes, and of course, THE JEWELS
No one can top her vocal chops or comedic genius in this performance. Lenny would have been proud.
I love Kristin Chenoweth's rendition of this song. Would love to hear her sing more operatic works!
I don't know how she finds all that jewelry in the sofa, but I know what I'll by doing when I next go to Ikea :D
Chenoweth singing...
My brain: "CAuSe wE aRE LivING iN a MAtErIAL WORld. aND I aM a MatERiaL GiRL"
Even her blinks are choreographed. She is truly amazing.
I can see glinda singing this right now
This is an absolute masterclass
Fraaance--the funniest note in opera. Love Kristen ( and Patti of course also)
GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRL!! those notes were amaziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!
it's like a roller coaster.. but in vocals form
HOW does she transition from one voice to another so seamlessly?!?!?! And every single note perfectly placed while she bounces around and makes comedy. She is a goddess, there's absolutely no other possible explanation.
I think this lady is crazzyyy... and Kristen Chenoweth does such an amazing job with it. This is so great!
I aspire to have as good of a legit soprano voice as hers. She is such a queen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👑👑👑👑👑
Kristin is an unforgettable person. You can never unknow that performance.
It would have been nice if Bernstein could have lived to see this brilliant interpretation.
There is not a sad cell in my body when I see these two on the same stage at the same time. 😭💕
She was wonderful in such a wonderful piece of music; the whole of Leonard Bernstein's Candide is a masterpiece.
6:28 This part kills me from laughter!
She's amazing. The vocals, charisma, comedic timing and everything
Just think - I was in the audience at the Philharmonic for this very performance of Candide in 2005. In the orchestra. Kristen is amazing - she has the low notes and the stratospheric notes. And she does the trills and twirls to perfection. And every word is audible, her diction is perfect.
I didn't know she can sing like this, wow.
The camera’s just as energetic as she is.
I mean talk about perfection. In complete control of the fiendishly difficult music AND impeccable comedic timing. I consider it an honor to watch this vid!
Impeccable singing. Incredible performance. Has reached the lofty level of that which is called "art".
The patron saint of drowning out self-hate with blind materialism 😂 also she's like the embodiment of the Betsey Johnson aesthetic 🤣
She hit that note like it owes her money
I come back to this version at least once a year. She’s the best! I will always adore Kristen!
Wow! Enough said. Kristen is beyond amazing
Have seen dozens of productions, have 5 recorded versions each with their own charm - but Chenoweth owns this role. She IS Cunnegonde. Brilliant!
