Ever since I received my MPC Key 37, there is always something new to learn, and/ or surprise. I'm thoroughly convinced that it was an excellent investment. In fact, I'm convinced that it's BAD ASS. Another awesome video Bro!
I often see people using the workflow you described... making loops on a MPC, then performing them into Ableton to create an arrangement and add vocals and stuff. But Akai has a product which combines both of those feature sets into a single device, the Force. So it baffles me how little attention the Force gets, since it seems like it should be quite a bit more popular. I hope theyll finally merge all the features into a single device soon.
I’ve been doing this with Maschine plus for a while. Use it as midi controller hardware, use scales, chords, arpeggios, note repeat etc. You have to make a template with midi channels in software if you want to do it like in the vid, then save it and open in standalone . And I do mean standalone, not midi controller mode. Have a re script for reason, so I can assign midi channels to each track (reason only knows midi in “all” can’t assign midi channels), there is a module for midi out, so you can even go m+>reason>external hardware. With stems thrown in these days the possibilities are literally endless. (And I use both mpc one with Maschine plus together , this is one of the most exiting times to make music in my 20 years )
Bro you always raise the bar! I love how technical your videos are and you keep your explanations sort of simple. Lol. What a great feature for the Key 37. Thanks for your insights
Thank you so much for this video! I'm now able to use it in Studio One. I haven’t been able to use the Key 37's transport in there yet, but being able to use it in standalone with my VSTs is amazing!
Completely enjoy the channel got my Mpc key 37 as an accompaniment to my live 2 retro and am using it solely as a synth. it is probably the ultimate rompler HOWEVER I have not attempted to sync it with the Mac live 2
I would love to retrofit my Key 61, Live ii, and X with whatever board needed to do so, to add this. Especially the Key 61! It's supposed to be the bigger sibling to the Key 37...lol
@wirklich_niemand I've had one of those for years, but I quit using it. I prefer usb to usb connections for transferring midi data. Right now, I have my Key 61 and OG X connected to the midi den ports on my RME Fireface UFX iii. Which is cool, but all of my other devices that support midi over usb seem to be more dependable. I also have iConnectivity Mio XL, which is dope as well, but if the MPC's supported midi over usb like the Key 37, my setup would be a lot simpler.
When the key 61 came out I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen way out my price range thought now the key 37 is out I'm planning on getting one as there only a few hundred pound more than the MPC one ...but I'm not an MPC user I do use other samplers and synths ect so it's learning the MPC work flow that's putting me off but I'm pretty confident I'd figured it
Yeah you’re right about that. I wish they made these new MPCs to where we could upgrade the internal parts instead of buying the latest version but I am still happy with my original X and Live 2. I also wanted to thank you for your tutorials they come in clutch
Hello! Can this synthesizer be used as a full-fledged instrument at a concert with a band? In particular, I am wondering if it is possible to launch playback from it and separately display a click for the drummer?
Very informative Video, thanks a whole lot....Since you are in communication with AKAI, can you nicely request for a MPE FEATURE, in this New ERA of Productions..it's highly imperative. YOUR INFLUENCE IS GREATLY NEEDED THANKS AGAIN...
Hey Tefty, great video. Does this feature mean it’s possible to use plugins in the daw and sample the sounds to the mpc directly using the mpc keyboard with only one usb cable connected? Thanks!
That’s anyone who buys an in music product…. Pain and suffering 😂 I’ll never buy one of there products again. Horrible customer service and bugs galore.
If you want clean vocals, gotta get a preamp involved. You can boost the gain input on the back for a dynamic mic, but the noise floor is going to jump, which reduces the ability to compress and get clean vocals.
Interesting…I’ve been eyeing the Key 37 as a master controller for Ableton plus getting the things an MPC gets you. Sounds like this new feature makes it more useful alongside a DAW. If you plug a USB midi interface into your MPC One/One+ does it then show “USB MIDI Port 1”? Perhaps as someone else said, the new hardware adds 2 USB midi ports plus the interface to the keyboard.
I have my Mpc X linked with my daw via an external clock. Been trying to figure out how to get the daw and the mpc to start at the same points like you did. for example if the daw starts at bar 32 the mpc will also start at bar 32. Once I figure out how to do that my hybrid setup will be perfect. Would also like to access the internal drive and ssd from the cpu while in standalone but I can live without that tho.
It has to do with the clock settings in the MPC preferences under the midi ports. Once thats set, then make sure your DAW is sending Midi clock properly to the Midi port that your MPC is receiving.
Can you use USB B of Key 37 to *output* just the L/R audio of a sequence? Asking as my mixer (a Yamaha MG10XU) has a USB B input/output that allows for monitoring while NOT sending that to the stereo out (i.e. monitoring tracks while laying down vocals).
Hi, I have just tried to connect the mpc key 37 to a a laptop with ableton. Since the MPC Keys 37 has a USB audio, I thought it would be nice to use ableton as a slave instrument rack, eg. sending midi notes from the MPC to the ableton instruments and receiving the audio back to the MPC though the MPC Key 37 USB Audio interface. But when I press the small MPC icon in the upper right corner, Ableton detects the MPC key 37 USB audio ports, but the MPC keeps waiting for a daw connection eg. it shows the red screen that says "looking for a computer", and keeps waiting...So in my case It doesn't work :-( What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for all your great videos!
A couple things, in my video I was in standalone mode for the Key 37 and used the usb-midi to send midi to Ableton back and forth. In this mode you can't use the audio interface features while in standalone mode (it's like if you hooked up two computers to each other asking one to be an audio interface and still run as a normal computer). Also in the video, I was using a separate audio interface to bring all the audio into my computer, which was running Ableton. Ableton was then being treated as a digital mixer and host for VST instruments. So in your case, you're in controller mode (which gets you access to the audio interface features) but in order to run an MPC session, you gotta load up the software plugin inside Ableton. It's honestly not as convenient. And things get really confusing if you're unaware of the specific differences between controller mode and standalone mode. Hope this helps!
I went from mpc one to mpc one plus cuz it has wifi.... but now I have to buy key 37 cuz this feature... can I use scale mode with daw in standalone mode?
Thank you! I have tried and I'm not a big of fan of it for a couple reasons. First, I don't like EQ'ing in the MPC. I miss my DAW EQs like ProQ or any other visual EQ. Second I'm not a big fan of the reverbs currently in the MPC. Lastly, if I'm doing vocals, I usually max out of the 4 effect limit pretty fast. Also editing 'breaths' in vocals is a bit of pain in the MPC. Just my 2 cents 🙏
hey, i did everything you mentioned in the video in ableton and mpc key 37 settings. however, i cant see my midi plugins from ableton in mpc key 37. In the video you can switch the vsti plugins in main view as separate tracks and you have the vsti names showed in mpc - how can i do this?
The only thing it does is provide the midi connections. All the labeling and midi channel routing has to be done manually. For instance, the Pigments track I have in the Key 37, I labeled that myself after I set the midi channel to the track that Ableton is listening to for the Pigments track (in Ableton). Once you've set everything up, save it as a template on both the MPC and Ableton to save time from session to session.
I have a Novation Launchpad MK3 Pro and how would you suppose that would work with the MPC Key 37? I just got my Key 37 the other day and I am so impressed. Thanks and have an amazing day 😁
7:36 I wonder if that’s part of the reason there’s not two USB A ports. They could’ve just redirected the port to pick up a piece of hardware “keyboard” that initially was intended to be a separate thing.
Possibly? Tough to tell without cracking it open and having a detailed understanding of the engineering behind it. My contact said specifically 'hardware innovation that was exclusive to the key 37' and was not coming to the other MPCs via firmware.
Kinda sort of said the same thing. I was leaning towards not giving a extra port at all and using what was already there for a different purpose. Definitely know what the difference between a USB A port vs B. Don't know though there's nothing in the OS that will flat out say it or chime to let us know.
I have a question about the sound engine. how easy is it to design sounds from scratch? is it possible or is everything presets in the various programs and then tweaking the presets?
Most engines are pretty straight forward. The Mini D and Jura (paid plugins) are super simple if you used any of the typical subtractive synth emulations in VST format. OPx4 is probably the most complicated out of the bunch, but it's to be expected in an FM synth. As touch screen interfaces go, Akai's engineers have actually done a great job of making the interface feel usable to design/alter sounds. The biggest issue is the stock plugin synths are the least exciting IMO out of the bunch in terms of sound quality. Mini D and Jura are big steps in better sound engines overall. Just my 2 cents.
Hi Tefty Great info and great vid as usual. one quick question, I noticed in midi / midi clock or MTC. With MTC can the key 37 sequencer be slaved to a hardware multitrack recorder. So the key 37 does midi and multitrack does the audio. Great for jamming/ writing.
Thank you! And yes, the MPC can absolutely follow another clock. In the video I could've easily reversed the setup to where anytime I hit play in Ableton it would start the MPC clock. And same with transport controls and measure selection from within Ableton to MPC.
I can do that now with my MPC X. Yes, i use the midi ports, but there isn't anything different.. audio over usb would have been hugh which im sure its coming
yeah I mentioned in the video you can do the same thing by hooking up the MIDI Din ports. The problem with this for the One and One+ is you're taking up your one set of ports for external gear. Also with one USB cable that came with the Key 37, it replaces 4 Midi cables and an external box connecting to your computer to handle the two sets of Midi ports. Another benefit, you can plug the Key 37 directly into an iPad or iPhone and get midi communication. Assuming you have a proper USB hub.
WOW thats nice !! Will try it with Logic Pro X . I have a audio interface connected to the USB A port on the MPC. Can i connect the MPC at the same time through USB B to the computer? Will test it and see what happens
i need to know if it has an LFO feature, and if that feature can be applied to samples like an RS7000.. either thru the hardware or thru one of the plugins.. otherwise its a no go for me.. smh..
huh, fascinating. I suppose if you're big into MPC production and bumping into RAM and CPU limitations, this provides an interesting way to expand your setup. Just... chain up a second MPC!
So that's what sparked the video. As soon as I realized what the Key 37 was doing I emailed my contact asking when that feature was coming to my Live 2. When he confirmed it was a 'hardware innovation exclusive to the key 37' and not possible in the other MPCs because of hardware, I was like damn...
No. Akai has never sponsored or paid me money. I've obviously been sent gear, but there has never been a requirement to say or post anything about the gear. I've literally been sent stuff I've never posted about because I didn't like the workflow. I'm a professional musician that makes TH-cam content because I have a passion for sharing information.
@@teftymusictech not casting shade, or not attempting too. ;). The fact that it can send midi as a usb midi device in standalone is quirky and interesting but def not earthshaking ;). I just seemed like something that Akai would ask you point out, that’s all. Now, if it could stream from disk -THAT would be earthshaking.
No shade taken! Just clarifying intentions. Definitely not earthshaking by any means, but what caught me off guard is it's a hardware limitation on older units that's preventing this ability. When I first realized it wasn't in the other MPCs I emailed my Akai contact asking when it's going to be in my Live 2. When he said it's a 'Hardware innovation exclusive to the Key 37' I thought it'd be worth sharing the info since I don't see any details on Akai's website.
In standalone the MPC finds it in its own OS. When in controller mode it behaves as if you inserted/mounted a drive with an audio interface on a hub of some sort. Other MPCs the ssd shows at the same time too. You hear the USB device inserted chime. That’s how you would transfer files. Also on the MPC Daw software you just go to your SD card from its own file browser. You never get errors of not being able to find files unless they were actually deleted or you did something to corrupt them. In standalone all the files within project are kept in ram until you save so you don’t make a mess of files. When you save it’s like collect and save. Loading will pick up everything that was dumped in that contained folder, so even when you switch to controller mode the computer is just picking up where you left off and doing the same thing, but collecting in its ram and dumping in a folder when you save.
Imagine you're working in standalone mode but you wanted to use Vst instruments on your computer on a track or multiple tracks without switching to controller mode. Or if you wanted to sync your daw to your mpc in standalone.
Definitely not ground breaking. Hopefully I didn't imply this was 'game changing' in the video. Reason why I made the video is because this feature is not coming to the other MPCs via firmware, which I assumed it was at first.

@@teftymusictech that’s crazy. Could you do a video of the work around for us trying to emulate that feature. Much appreciated.
What is the unique thing? A 2x16 Channels USB MIDI interface?
Did Akai fund this video in any way?
surely.
@@teftymusictechand even if you were funded, teaching us is always appreciated. We get that for free.
When he said it's a 'Hardware innovation exclusive to the Key 37' I thought it'd be worth sharing the info since I don't see any details on Akai's website.
i have no clue what he's on about?
something something MIDI something something USB...
@@teftymusictech Ah, I get it now...
wait, wait, wait. in standalone mode you dont have access to the sd card? huh?
When plugged into the computer, you have to be in controller mode to get access to the as card.
No in controller mode you don't have access to the SD card while it's inserted into the MPC. It had to be inserted into the computer. I believe 🤔
@@THA-REAPER You should teach a class 🎶🙏👍
I dont get the big deal at all makes no sense to me...usb over audio yes
Imagine you're working in standalone mode but you wanted to use Vst instruments on your computer on a track or multiple tracks without switching to controller mode. Or if you wanted to sync your daw to your mpc in standalone.
Definitely not ground breaking. Hopefully I didn't imply this was 'game changing' in the video. Reason why I made the video is because this feature is not coming to the other MPCs via firmware, which I assumed it was at first.
@teftymusictech not ground breaking for some but very useful for that that dont to use midi cables.. great video ..im sure usb over audio is coming..
Totally totally lost! On what this guy said
