For what it's worth, the giant section of knobs next to the OSC box DO NOT CHANGE function no matter what, it's only the OCS controls (4 faders 3 knobs) that change function besides the sequencer buttons
ok, now I want this synth!
Finally someone who mentione the latency issue. I sold the digi bcse of that. It was 32 ms on mine... and i am a key player so...
Still really bummed that they haven't fixed the AU plugin for Logic. Still can't use as a multi-output instrument :(
Do you have a link for the stool you showed?
Dude.. this is an amazing tutorial! I had no clue about the internal sampling. Thanks for sharing! Also, can you recommend a quality, affordable sustain pedal I can pick up for my MPC ? Thanks🤘🏼
I'm still learning how my mind and process works in the composing/producing process. As much as I love glitchy madness (IDM/breakcore/glitch-hop etc), which I think the Digitakt is great for, I really don't like programming my music. I personally don't like step sequencing as part of my writing process. At the end of the day, if I'm not playing my parts in real time I personally don't feel satisfied. The process of getting glitchy sounds with ratchets and stutters is part of my sound design process, but getting those sounds into a playable instrument that I can play real time and develop phrases, sections, etc. into a song is such a vital step for me. This has been a huge eye opener for me finding what works and I learned it by trying to do glitch/IDM in Ableton and realized I always ended up resampling and chopping to pads on Push 2 using Simpler or Drum Rack. This video verified to me that the Digitakt is something I would absolutely love to have, but it would not be my main standalone songwriting tool. Sometimes I have moments where I'm like, "damn did I get the wrong sampler?!" But it's starting to come together. I'm a weird person with a weird process haha.
Regarding the acb tech... going only on channel 1 - presumably you can record a perfrmance and then sample (record) it internally, or achieve the same thing with the MPC? A bit of a ball ache work around, but for those situations where you want several acb models or a v-piano running in a composition.... yea?
@teftymusictech Great video thanks. I love my Model D for bass but unfortunately mine has also corroded the same as yours. It ruined two good jack leads before I realised. Did you hear back from Behringer? Were they any help with the issue?
I used to live in Sacramento. Hung out with the Techno Truth gang for a while playing shows live as "Saturn Theory." Trance live act, fun times. Good channel, subbing.
Don't forget you have up 8 Mini D's on the MPC hardware mode or whatever the system can handle.
Yo Tefty so now with the release of MPC 3 and the ability to arrange within the MPC in stand-alone and also the ability to record more synths over the beat, do you think there’s still a reason to bring the mixdown into Ableton for completion?
Minifreak is amazing, -Fantastic sounds -Double voicing -Intuitive sequencer -The matrix/grid, for being able to see what is happening at a glance. -Mod sliders can be customized to any knob If you want your first synth to be future proof and have a wide application 💯 I don't think I agree that it's the best first synth since it's so advanced. 90% of it's functions will be above your ability/understanding if you are a novice. It wasn't my first synth, but it might end up being my last synth I buy because it can just do so much.
Thanks for this definitely now finna get this
Good to know about the latency, honestly. I don't think that would be a deal breaker for me, but it's good to consider going in. I've been wanting a Digitakt for like 2 years now. Just got the MPC and I'm gonna stay committed to it, but the desire to make glitchy/IDM madness on Digitakt is strong haha. Luckily they're like two different beasts so I'd love to have both. Thanks for the info, dawg.
Great video as always. Thanks for sharing. Not sure if anyone already mentioned it in the comments, so just thought I'd add. There's actually a workaround for the track limitations in Ableton. Within the Overbridge app, if you go to the Mixer tab, you can assign the tracks to specific outputs. It's a bit cumbersome, but what I do is record route track 16 to Output 1, Delay to Out 2, Reverb to Out 3, and Chorus to Out 4. I'll then record the first take of my song with tracks 1 to 15 on and track 16 and the effects muted. Then i'll do another take with the opposite. That enables you to capture all the tracks for your song. Don't know if that was confusing or not. LOL
Microseconds not milliseconds right? Milliseconds is very audible
it is definately milliseconds.. DAWs have something called plugin delay compensation where are plugins will have latency added so that basically everything is delayed as much as the plugin with the most latency, meaning everything is in time with each other but there is noticeable delay between e.g. midi input events, recorded audio
Is the hydra synth similar to Serum when it comes to synthesis/sound designing?
beside Kobol I think you were able to do the all this in Fantom, honestly the synth engines of Fantom are so versatile, also the effects sounds so good and sequencer its a breeze to use, even song song is very intuitive but agree a final mixing in Ableton with custom plugins can add more to the final sound
Looking to get into this. Should i choose mpc live 2, mpc one, or the key 37?
Subscribed! Great video.
Was watching a Teo 5 video and this poped out !! Great video as usual and it made me remeber why i skiped those , not only but can't understand why ZERO values feedabck on screens from knobs , it's amazing how they ignore all request for that while it is present in the Rev 2and others
bought a 4 by 5 piece of 3/4 redwood screwed it to wall studs and then just added wall brackets....rock solid ...no bounce
Good comparison video. One thing: you can make a 16-bar sequence on the D2 - just make two 8-bar patterns and a pattern chain with P1 and P2. Now you have a 16-bar sequence. BTW, you can make much longer than 2-pattern chains. :) For me, if I want a portable DAW, I’ll use a laptop running a DAW. The Elektron boxes are about getting away from the DAW which is precisely why I love them.
just ordered one of these second hand for a decent price. have a decent amount of experience w vsts but never owned an actual hardware synth. watching you turn all these knobs is so exciting i cant wait and i think its going to be a gateway drug to a bigger hole in my pocket reguards to my home studio lmaoooo these powerful machines aint cheap
When you are in velocity mode, the first pad is not 0% velocity, is "As played". It takes the velocity from the pad itself, as the midi "velocity" parameter. Thans for the video.
Good catch! Thank you
I've been a big user of Overbridge and the A4/AR (formerly) for like 4-5 years now. 100% do that tip of running a DIN Midi Cable out to whatever unit you're using for OB - The overbridge driver does a -lot-, and with the amount of work it does it's kinda too much to get sample-accurate timing over the USB connection alone. If you split the midi from the audio you get the best of all worlds, and depending on your DAW you can use all the I/O on the unit, including using the box(es) as line-inputs for other gear, which is crazy handy.
DT1 turn off latency compensation and there was zero latency on the recording. DT2 I have t tried recording yet but I don’t see why it would be different.
I thought you were accurate beats haha you both look really similar to each other
So yeah, there's a big sync delay that has to be compensated for when using overbridge, but that doesn't stop you from having tight sync between Ableton sequencing and DTII and whatever else is synced to Ableton. I can run Ableton, DTII, and an OXI One with tight sync among all three, for instance. I need to dial in a negative sync offset for the OXI when using all three, but it's a consistent, stable offset so it's fine. The only real drag is that since the offset is negative, the OXI is behind when I hit play. It takes about a quarter of a bar or so to lock up. Not a deal-breaker in the studio, although it's an important limitation you'd have to be aware of for anything live.
LOL asking Korg for updates that give features 😭🤣😭🤣
😩
I had many classic and modern synths including a large 5U and 3U modular. The DT2 is by far the most interesting piece of gear I ever owned !ThX for the nice content
how do you delete a whole group (bank) of patches from number to number from the Iridium that you have exported already
Still have crackles and Clicks if i open overbridge only on dgt 2 i did try all settings in Control Panel. If i open other elektron overbridge works well. I do using motu mk5 interface and fl studio
Hmmm might be the computer? Or maybe the audio interface buffer size needs to be higher?
Did you cover the audio routing menu in settings? You don’t have to mute the mixer tracks manually just remove them from the main out via that settings menu.
This is how we used the mains As an fx return track on the older Overbridge devices at least
Great tip!
Corrected information is at 3:58
I've been waiting for Overbridge so I can use my computer to control it... There are ways to get around the complications with Abelton... The only other things that I want is stereo sample export and the implementation of the slice/chopping ability of the Octotrack...
VST3 also has a 15 Tracks limitation in Ableton Live. Unfortunately.
yeah only live. In bitwig and other daws it seems to work fine. Wonder why live has that limitation. Weird. Maybe live will give an update to unlock extra channels. Feel bad for live users. :(
This is dope sounding plugin. I hope the gets it soon.
Nice demo music. I hope Akai & Moog make something together.
Hey! So I did a quick edit and re-uploaded this from two days ago. I had some incorrect info (and included some additional info) thanks to the previous comments ❤
Thank you! 🤌🖤
You CAN synch the elektron boxes using overbridge just fine. Stop scaring people! LOL Here is a more in depth guide : Turn off synch in the plugin. Goto preferences and midi in ableton and look at the midi clock stuff. You want to send midi clock to DT2 from there over usb . For that clock that goes to the DT 2 , you can set latency compensation settings there to get it in synch with hardware and or VSTS. As for getting all the channels in live you can also use an aggregate device as option 3. Personally this would be option 1 for me because aggregate devices are amazing on a mac and is the sole reason I switched from PC daw. Open the Audio Midi Setup app on your mac. Make new aggregate device and set the main audio interface as your main audio interface. Set DT2 to "Audio and midi over usb" and not overbridge in USB settings on the DT2. Then in audio midi setup app on mac click the digitakt 2 checkbox to be an aggregate device with your main interface. Then, very important, you want to select the drift correction check box for DT 2 on that screen. This tells it that DT 2 is a slave to the word clock being sent from your main interface. This way you will have zero clicks and pops from digital clocking issues. Then all the extra channels will show up in live in addition to the channels of your audio interface. Use the audio midi setup app to see how the channels map. For PC users you can use an app called "VB-Audio Matrix Coconut" to do aggregate devices and it actually works really well but its way harder to setup.
@osands I can confidently say that most users are not going to jump through these hoops to get the syncing correctly with a DAW. There's a reason Elektron gives a big disclaimer for this. It's complicated and very specific to each machine. Overbridge promises a simple/seamless experience, but the syncing and latency is not simple/seamless. For the aggregate devices, I've done a lot of testing on this in past with various devices (like a Fantom 8 and my Motu interface) and it seems to always have clicks and pops at some point. Very noticeable on pad like instruments, not so much on percussive and distorted sounds. There's actually tons of discussions on this in various forums talking about the shortcomings of aggregate devices. It's great to get things working in a pinch, and it's way better the Windows options, but it's not rock solid for every setup (which is why I'm not recommending it) And on the Windows side, I've tested the VB-Audio options and they all pump up the latency dramatically and still have occasional glitches (at least 2-3 years ago). Just to be clear, I'm not saying that this syncing method is bad or anything, it's GREAT actually! But it's more advanced AND very specific to each system/setup/user.
@@osands thanks for taking the time to write this out. I've ran into issues with midi and audio over midi with the polyend play+ and did the same and works like a charm. Good one on sharing for the diggers
@@teftymusictech jump through hoops? Its literally the way you synch most any piece of hardware to your DAW, with midi clock. Not that hard... Well maybe it is with Ableton. I remember it being much more of a PITA then bitwig which is much better. You are right though its not seamless. Takes the same effort as synching any other piece of hardware. And as for the aggregate device maybe my interface clock is just bad ass(antelope clock is known to be great) because I literally have 150+ channels of aggregate devices with zero clicks and pops ever. I have my main interface(orion 32+ gen 3) then a tr8s, an isla s2400, virus TI2, System 8, roland VT 4, digitone II, line six POD go, and sometimes I add another 10-14 channels from tracker +, play +, and roland SH4d, all running as aggregate to my main interface with absolutely zero issues. I have been running all these channels for two years so its definitely not "in a pinch" for me. One thing to note you might want to dedicate an entire thunderbolt port to all your devices that would be using usb audio and not have it on same tb port as your interface as there could potentially be bandwidth issues. You would be surprised how much audio over usb a tb port can handle though. Its crazy. I also tested VB-Audio Matrix Coconut and it was good for me on my i5 PC but I only tested with a behringer umc1820 and another device. That was like 3 months ago. On the gearspace forums they have a term its called YMMV. Your mileage may vary. And I say this for all Ive said here; YMMV.
For channel 7/8 can you connect your phone via usb (I don’t want to use Bluetooth nor the aux)… would want to have a two way connection with my phone
SP 404 wins
After the Kronos, Fantom is my favorite keyboard to play in a live setting. I love all the model expansions especially the JD-800 and Juno models. So much fun to play.
7:20 for me ...
Ordered my Key 37 yesterday and I've been cramming videos. Man, my head is spinning! I wish I could start my experience with MPC 3 instead of learning both. How long until the actual release?
Nice review. 😊
Just ordered one from amazon for £166 - to good a deal miss I thought. Not sure why they are so cheap right now but they are!
no working studio one, any ideas?
Got to be one of the best, easiest to hear, demonstrations of the difference between analog gear and plugins. Especially when you’re talking about the give between notes. Very well done.
