    How to be Art God:
    1. Put white circle on black background.
    This creates contrast, a range of values, and a creative approach because it leaves the viewer to use their imagination. It doesn’t over complicate the scene and the black background creates a perfect outline for the object of the circle.
    Bam. You’re welcome

    Love this video! Also, something that guweiz does that makes values look so on point is that he first paints in greyscale and adds colors after with layer modes. It's really helpful when you paint something that relies more on values than colors. But you can definitely do it without that step, or just have a b&w mask that you can toggle on and off while painting, I found that works for me. Thank you Sam for this study!❤

    I was floored when I saw you were going to apply your analysis to your own work, including the real-time commentary while you worked. To borrow the turn of phrase used in this video, you, Sam, are an art god in your own right. Thank you so much for sharing all your hard work! 💖💖💖

  • @mekidunston
    @mekidunston 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Ahh I've never seen a video of yours within the first hour, especially on a guru exposition video! 😍 Anyway video commentary:
    I think my main problem with my art is I try to jump into values and lightsources too early in the first stages which is why it never gets a semirealistic look I like that Wlop, Axsens, Nixeu, and so many others have mastered over time. I love when you do vids like this because the dissections really gives others an idea of how they should review their work ❤️❤️
    Question: Could you do an Art God video for Yuumei? If you've seen her art style it's very unique and I believe you'd have fun "exposing" her secrets lol ✨

    I've been waiting for this Sam!!! I just bought bought Guweiz's artbook. It feels so great to have something tangible from an Art God.

  • @GenLiu
    @GenLiu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Guweiz has a boldness that borders insolence, and I love him for that.
    For a start, he had built his entire style on something that an artist should never ever do, which is to mix ancestral Japanese/Chinese elements and clothing with modern ones.
    Now, if someone from the realm of the mortals does that, it's gonna feel jarring, but he somehow, he manages to make it work and make it work beautifully at that.
    Then, his compositions are incredibly risky, at times. I mean, look at the piece at 4:31. That pink color he chose for the characters on the entrance door of that building is madness. It's so bright and vivid, it's a miracle it doesn't distract the eye from the center piece of the canvas.
    And yet, it doesn't. It's perfectly fluid and readable...In fact, it helps to make it more visually pleasing (look how it frames the lady's cigarette). I don't even know how he managed that, it's basically magic to me, that man might as well call himself Houdiwei.

  • @AbrahamSayago
    @AbrahamSayago 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sam. I didn't expect your video went this way. Often times, people highlight other artists and talk about what consider good from them from a technical pov, just like you did in the first half of the video, and that's it. But seeing how you also admitted you don't feel comfortable working in a certain way (using darker values), which in itself demands to be very humble to accept, and then _you actually went_ and did it... I was so not expecting that. "I'm really going against all of my instincts", because you knew it was going to be uncomfortable, but you still did it.
    I'm always so scared of trying something that I'm afraid it will end up bad. So seeing an artist like you in an uncomfortable position, but then you dare to challenge your own instincts, it's actually the best inspiration to actually push my own limits and go out of my comfort zone. Can't thank you enough for this video, it really caused a positive impact. 😀

    I think an important thing to take from Guweiz's work isn't necessarily exactly how he uses specific values, but how he uses contrast - you could invert his value set up and get the same impact but a completely different mood. Something he also likes to do is add high contrast elements to his characters, he definitely doesn't do it all the time, but he has more than one painting where a mostly dark character is wearing a brightly glowing earring.

    You can just paint with your usual range of shading and then apply a sub-layer to adjust the intensity of the dark values, as much as you like, 'overlay' and 'multiply' are the best digital buddies.

      Funny I immediately thought it was a plane scene from the line art. Probably from all those concept making i did for weeks.
