Seeing Sam's palette while he moved around the canvas was extremely helpful in helping me understand what he was talking about. For sure one of the best art teachers on TH-cam.
Love this video! Also, something that guweiz does that makes values look so on point is that he first paints in greyscale and adds colors after with layer modes. It's really helpful when you paint something that relies more on values than colors. But you can definitely do it without that step, or just have a b&w mask that you can toggle on and off while painting, I found that works for me. Thank you Sam for this study!❤

Guweiz has a boldness that borders insolence, and I love him for that. For a start, he had built his entire style on something that an artist should never ever do, which is to mix ancestral Japanese/Chinese elements and clothing with modern ones. Now, if someone from the realm of the mortals does that, it's gonna feel jarring, but he somehow, he manages to make it work and make it work beautifully at that. Then, his compositions are incredibly risky, at times. I mean, look at the piece at 4:31. That pink color he chose for the characters on the entrance door of that building is madness. It's so bright and vivid, it's a miracle it doesn't distract the eye from the center piece of the canvas. And yet, it doesn't. It's perfectly fluid and readable...In fact, it helps to make it more visually pleasing (look how it frames the lady's cigarette). I don't even know how he managed that, it's basically magic to me, that man might as well call himself Houdiwei.
I love this series of yours! For the next artist could you do one on Yuumeiart? They're art style is so stunning, beyond words. It would be interesting to see you replicate their style. Keep up the great work Sam❤

Hi Sam. I didn't expect your video went this way. Often times, people highlight other artists and talk about what consider good from them from a technical pov, just like you did in the first half of the video, and that's it. But seeing how you also admitted you don't feel comfortable working in a certain way (using darker values), which in itself demands to be very humble to accept, and then _you actually went_ and did it... I was so not expecting that. "I'm really going against all of my instincts", because you knew it was going to be uncomfortable, but you still did it. I'm always so scared of trying something that I'm afraid it will end up bad. So seeing an artist like you in an uncomfortable position, but then you dare to challenge your own instincts, it's actually the best inspiration to actually push my own limits and go out of my comfort zone. Can't thank you enough for this video, it really caused a positive impact. 😀
The progress is amazing to see knowing Guweiz only started drawing in 2014 and had major struggled in learning everyday and now they're on of the best :)

I think an important thing to take from Guweiz's work isn't necessarily exactly how he uses specific values, but how he uses contrast - you could invert his value set up and get the same impact but a completely different mood. Something he also likes to do is add high contrast elements to his characters, he definitely doesn't do it all the time, but he has more than one painting where a mostly dark character is wearing a brightly glowing earring.
Not gonna lie, when i first saw your work i got depressed as much as I got motivated. For you sir i started working digitally regularly( I'm basically a treditional artist so i started digital for few months.) But i also just keep wondering how can someone say lots of lots word with this simplicity. I mean how. Having you quite a blessing sir. Thanks for your helps.
Sam I'm 27 I have no instinct when it comes to art at all. I like to write, but I now would like to dabble even if it is just background art. You inspired me. I would like to make backdrops at minimum for my stories.
Digital are is nice but I'm more impressed with traditional artist but a breakdown in any artist work is a valuable learning moment so I appreciate this.

That looks like such a fun study to try! Doing it on digital would so much easier than reduction painting on a canvas from black because once you swipe it off, it's gone 😱
You can just paint with your usual range of shading and then apply a sub-layer to adjust the intensity of the dark values, as much as you like, 'overlay' and 'multiply' are the best digital buddies.
