As cringe-worthy as this was, this was one of those rare TV moments that were actually real. There's a lot of pre-scripted, mundane television, but this was a legitimate moment where reality just happened to be filmed.
Jason Sadeikus loved it. Paul Rudd definitely thinks it’s funny but feels awkward because his old friend Joe is getting uncomfortable so he’s trying not to laugh. Arties on fire here.
Paul Rudd apparently told Artie it was "legendary" during the commercial break. I think Jason enjoyed it until Artie shat on his career, but there didn't seem to be any hard feelings. Besides, he was the only guy on SNL who was actually funny at this time, with the possible exception of Bill Hader. Even the host, Joe Buck, insisted that Artie return for the next episode. HBO hated that and canned the show because of it. He never got to an episode 4. Great stuff, all around. These are just guys being guys, and it's fucking excellent.
After watching this again, I have to say the three guests are actually pulling their weight, except Joe Buck, the host. He's just not the guy for this. Artie and Jason are bantering back and forth organically. That's good. With Antman chiming in with a quip here and there. They know how to do this shit naturally. Joe Buck is as good here as he is on a baseball broadcast, which is horrible.
Yeah, it's equal fault. Nobody expected Artie to pull out the big haymakers (in spite of pre-show "get rough" advisory), but Joe wasn't supporting the show on his own merits either (which is probably why producers told Artie to "go the extra mile" in the first place, fearing Joe couldn't carry it solo). In his second book, Artie describes this segment -- not the entire show, but specifically this final 8-minute stretch -- as one of the worst things he's ever done. He still sort of defends the first bit, which is slightly more playful, but, somewhere between "jizz on my chest" and "this show won't make it to episode #4" a line was crossed -- once the show itself was mocked, I don't think there was any coming back. Joe seems to share that sentiment in his friendly-but-factual foreword.

Artie had had the upper hand until he decided to mix it up with Jason Sudeikis. And how funny to watch given what we now know about Artie's 'career' and Sudeikis rise to a-lister.

Anyone who didn't think Artie was funny here truly doesn't know humor. Joe Buck and Jason Sudekis were whiny little bitches while Paul Rudd was equally hilarious and rolled with the punches. All the people who hate Artie are the type of people who think Dane Cook is funny.

Ironically, Joe Buck Live aired 3 episodes and never did get to show number 4.
It came out later that Joe asked Artie to "light him up." And he got what he asked. Joe didn't blame Artie for this and took ownership of it. Honestly, pretty cool move IMO.
I wonder if that’s to save face in a way. It makes him look better and makes this whole thing seem less catastrophic. From Artie he said the producer or something told him to riff if it gets boring so idk.
