2013 Nissan Altima CVT Transmission Failure - (Pt. 1) Breakdown and Failure

  • My 2013 Nissan Altima had the CVT start to fail while driving and I caught the breakdown on my phone, as well as the total failure in a parking lot where I pulled off. Happened at 92k miles. Lots of other similar videos on YT of these awful Nissan transmissions, but wanted to throw mine in to help dissuade anyone on the fence about purchasing a Nissan with a CVT.
    More info: www.nissancvtfa...
Nissan's CVT transmissions are STILL unreliable and should be avoided. Here are some credible sources with fairly large sample sizes:
CarComplaints.com gives the Altima an "Avoid Like the Plague" rating with hundreds of transmission failure reports www.carcomplai... -- also, the 2013 and 2014 Altima are both in the Top 10 Worst Vehicles in their entire database (that includes pretty much all makes and models back to 2000): www.carcomplai...
NHTSA complaint database lists 239 powertrain complaints for the 2013 Altima, most of which are CVT problems www.nhtsa.gov/... (for comparison, the 2013 Accord has 57 complaints, and 2013 Camry has 34 -- those are direct competitors who sold similar numbers)

Well truth be told.... Look at the *POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.* On most makes it expires at 5 years, 60k miles. What you want, a car that lasts forever?? You want a manufacturer/dealer to fix your car for free for the next 400k miles?? LOL get a Toyota or Honda either with either a stick shift or a conventional automatic and make sure you do a proper fluid flush when indicated in the owner's manual or even a little before if you drive hard or live in a bad area for extreme weather like I do here in NJ. That'll get you to 300k miles, in one of those cars. Was never a good idea to try to pull a 3500 lbs. (or more) vehicle using a belt. Just doesn't make any sense (#physicis). The only place you use a belt on a modern car is the accessories/serpentine belt, and maybe a timing belt, but even timing belts are stupid and everyone should be buying engines with oil lubricated timing chains. So not even a belt is good for that, much less to pull all the weight of a modern car or SUV.
Listen to Scotty!!! Stay away from CVTs!!!

I have a 06 altima 2.5s with the cvt tranny. Im at 205,906 miles now. Had it since 100,000. Drove it for the past year and a half with a bad misfire, changed valve cover twice, put in kw fiberlock military grade for a blown headgasket, and this mofo is still pushing on and going strong. Craziest shit ive ever seen. Dropping a new engine and trans in next month. But this thing is a tank somehow. Had to put in both front floor pans a few months ago. Struts, shocks, calipers, rotors, and tires are shot. Still going strong though, lmao. Wanted to see what type of abuse it could take. Now I love her, and she is gonna be all new in a month.

@@Hairybarryy Nate Frontier is not junk at all, in fact, a 2007 Frontier just recently hit a million miles on the original engine and transmission. It was a 5-speed manual one with the 4-cylinder engine. usa.nissannews.com/en-US/releases/the-nissan-frontier-that-delivered-a-million-miles-and-counting?
Yes, the automatic is obviously not as reliable as the 5-speed or 6-speed manual, but most issues occurred in the 2005-2008 models because of the radiator cracking and causing coolant to mix with transmission fluid. The 2009's and later no longer had the issues and they are pretty decent transmissions, they are much better than Nissan CVT's and other faulty ones in SUV's and sedans.
Besides, most people who drive pickup trucks use them for long highway trips to tow and haul stuff, not as much like a sedan or SUV for everyday city driving. I often see Frontiers towing loads respectable for their size and class, and highway mileage will wear out your truck a-lot less compared to stop/go city driving.
The 6-cylinder 4.0 Litre engine is also pretty bullet-proof I have seen them with over 360k miles on Xterra's and Frontiers.
I don't know about you but if all you care about is 100% maximum reliability, then the only option for you would be a Tacoma or Thundra. I like them too but I find the Frontier better than the Tacoma in terms of offroad capability and engine power.
If you watch Scotty Kilmer then I understand. He is a millionaire but old and extremely cheap so he obviously likes only Toyotas and Hondas but most people who own trucks aren't as cheap as he is so sacrificing some reliability for more performance and capability is not uncommon.

Ya CVT’s all suck... sure some are better than others but by their vary nature of being continually variable that actually tend to wear out much faster vs other transmissions.. add to that that they are also sealed non flushable trans as well (mostly because unlike other options 99% of them are non serviceable, no drain or fill holes to do it while it’s installed) that means wear and tear will get worse quicker and isn’t as preventable.
I’m not saying my 2011 Volvo has a great trans either (though made it nearly 300,000 miles so far) but it has a properly clogged 6 speed Auto (TF80-SC which is also in the BMW i8 and Range Rover Evoque as well as crap tastic cars). If my trans gets a bit chonky with gear shifting or I notice I done 50k miles between flushes I can flush my fluid and actually improve things. Even though they say it’s a sealed unit it has drain hole and fill hole clearly marked on it.

Nissan's are problem cars. I used too have an 04 Sentra SE-R Spec V with a 6 Speed Manual Transmission, I remember things would break every 2-3 months. One day I was driving home after work, I didn't get very far, as I stopped at a Red light, my car wouldn't shift into gears, or move, but the engine was running, so I knew it wasn't my engine. I had it towed to a a shop where there's guy's I know for a long time, and they took my Transmission out of the car, told me my clutch was good, but the Transmission is done. I've had so many Honda's, in the past, and Toyota's, and not once has my Transmissions died. They all had high Kilometers in the 300,000 rang, Nissan's are junk.

I got to where I could pull the car in, swap the trans, install the TSB trans cooler, reprogram the TCM and drive the car out in 2.5 hours. Pays 9.1 hours. I sometimes did three in a day. They're really bad here in Vegas due to the heat. I got to where any 2.5L Altima that came in got scanned with the Consult II. If it had a P0610 code (trans overheat), I got a new trans and a cooler. I left in 2014, so I didn't have a lot of time with the new Altima's, but I did have a '13 roll off the truck with a bad trans. It failed on the test drive.

Sorry you went through this. I'm on my third Altima, mine have surpassed 200k miles. My 98 had 217k before the fuel pump went out and I traded it in. (The 4Speed auto was TERRIBLE), I then had an 07 3.5SE that was totaled at 201,734 miles and was still driving fine. I drive my Altimas hard and log about 40k/yr but I ALWAYS changed my CVT fluid every 25-30k miles. I have a 2015 now, only the 3.5SL, so here's hoping it'll last. I'm just not liking the shudder I get between 1 and 2k rpm.
I heard Nissan will be using their new 9 speed automatics soon, because if not, it'll just be Honda/Toyota/Hyundai-Kia when we refer to the big three from the far East.

Also, revving to redline isn't a bad thing. It's called a redline for a reason, an engine is safe to operate within a certain range. That certain range is the entire tachometer. As long as the engine does not exceed past the redline (which is not possible without aftermarket tuning) there is no danger in revving an engine. As long as you change the oil on time with the recommended weight oil, you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey, gas mileage isn't the best but I MUCH prefer a car going 300K+ trouble free miles than transmissions failing before 6 digits. It's not called for and I did a lot of research before I bought my grandpa car as my first. I wanted a sporty altima but forget it. They aren't bothering at all to fix their transmissions or make them better but we as the consumers have the most important role in all of this. They can't make cars if we don't buy their cars. KEEP UP WITH FACTORY CVT FLUID CHANGES EVERY 60,000 MILES MAXIMUM. The #1 cause for failure I see is not changing the fluid on time. Mine is a “fun” factor from a reliable car company. Many drivers suck, so I wanna enjoy driving where I can and automatic/CVTs doesn’t do it for me.

@@CZARKASTIC Right, but manual transmissions is old technology and there are far superior ones when it comes to reliability and efficiency, like what electric vehicles use, or what the hybrids from Toyota use. Manuals are with no doubt more reliable, simpler and efficient than most automatic and CVT out there due the simplicity they possess, but is not the most efficient nor reliable way to transfer the engine rotation into motion on the wheels. The clutch will eventually wear out, though depending on the manufacturer it can last 100,000 miles maybe, yet is something else to replace and / or that will break down. I have never driven a manual so i don't know how it must feel to change gears while driving nor why such action can be fun.

Nissan is finally getting what it deserves. They are now forced to cut their sales by 20%. Yay! Ever since the cancer known as Renault came into the picture, Nissan has been selling problem, unreliable cars plagued with French gremlins. Some gremlins became known immediately ( think 2013+ altimas, rogue’s pathfinders, Infiniti j35’s, sentra’s) and others began to hatch with time (2003+ Murano’ s Altima’s, maxima’s, Rogue’s, Frontier’s , Pathfinders, Quests) . From cvt lawsuits to radiator/transmission lawsuits to timing chain lawsuits, to oil consumption, to catalytic converters, to head haskets, to blown engines, to bad electricals, nothing about Nissan represented the reliability people once associated with this Japanese name. Let this stand as a lesson for any other reliable brand that tries to hide unreliable JUNK behind a once reliable name.
RENAULT=NISSAN AND NOW MITSUBISHI=JUNK! Avoid at all cost! And when RENAULT-Nissan says they are going back to focusing on making “profitable” cars as oppose to large fleet sales, just remember, they’re talking about their pockets, not yours. This same stunt is what they said when Renault first came in to the picture. It’s more of the same-ole, same-ole. Turd cars wrapped in nice shells with cheap/unreliable components taken from the lowest bidder. Dont forget, when Renault first came into the picture, they specifically said “NISSAN NEEDS TO BE CAUTIONS OF OVER QUALITY. DOES IT MATTER IF THE CAR LASTS 6-7 YEARS? NO BECAUSE THEY’LL LIKELY BE GETTIN A NEW ONE ANYWAYS”. (search google for the exact quote). This is what they proved to mean by “profitable” cars. If you buy a Nissan, you’re not their customer, you’re their sucker.
    BUY TOYOTA/LEXUS instead!!

But Nissan dose not use any of the Renault auto transmissions, Renault actually use there own traditional auto boxes and recently have just started to use Nissans Dual clutch transmission from the GTR in its vehicles. Nissan still develop and use there own engines because in the UK and Europe fuel is expensive so most of the Renaults use 900/1200cc turbocharged units. For example in the uk you can buy a Nissan Qashqai and a Renault Kadjar(same vehicle different panel work) with either a 1.5/ 1.6 Diesel or 115BHP 1.2 Turbo. The New Renaults very rarely cause us too much bother(other than tyre pressure warning issues), however the Nissan CVT transmissions that are in the Juke/note/micra/pulsar ect are always coming back in for warranty claims. It seems that the French stuff(even Peugeot/Citroen/DS) seems to have really sorted itself out and appear to be holding itself up against its Japanese and German rivals at the moment, to be honest the only vehicles I would have caution about buying is Nissan CVT/Ford Powershift and 1.0 Eco boost and Any Mercedes as they seems to cause our service dept nothing but headache .

It's a fact, nobody reads the owner's manual. I just bought a car, it's like my 10th new car I've ever owned, I've always read the owner's manual, even if I already knew the information, you never know what you might learn. Every manufacturer is a little different. My 2003 Honda Odyssey has 171k miles on the original transmission. Gee I wonder why. Also, on these CVTs, driving styles/habits are a big part of the longevity. You can't drive these like regular automatics, people don't understand that. You can't be pounding on the accelerator. These are not race cars, there are not even Honda Civics LOL they're just glorified snowmobiles.

@@dareksasasa7589 You have to change your transmission/transaxle fluid, problem is, if you do it too late, you can actually ruin the transmission with clean fluid. You probably changed yours out too late, once you have some clutch burn up and friction material dispersed in the fluid, now your transmission relies on that dirty fluid to keep shifting. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That why preventative maintenance is so important. Also, you have to use OEM fluids, these modern transmissions are not the old ones from 30+ years ago where you can use just about any fluid.

If you get lucky you’ll just get that perfect one.. but most of them are cheap af and the transmissions are made in either Mexico or china.. no wonder they suck cuz they’re PLASTIC LOL. But it also has to do with the driver.. Nissans I’ve noticed have very sensitive gas pedals and if u press too quick or too hard it’ll jerk the car and fuck the transmission up.. so it has to do with two things... how well you drive AND how lucky you are , hopefully you’ll be the odds and get that “perfect” Nissan
