Definitely a trip I'd love to make someday!! Sucks Q couldn't make it!.. I'm kicking back to enjoy this one since I've always been curious about these trails!!!!

Lol a little creepy but amazing place i can't wait to try in next few weeks to go somewhere like that.. Im in Florida so im not sure if i can go that far but mabee some day, AWSOME VIDEO!!!!!! be safe and have a Great time!!!!
I have been there with quads and SXS in recent years. Great trails, lots of miles, and the roads are legal to ride (most of them). The dust is the killer - if it rains overnight, you can get a couple hours of fun before you begin to choke on silica.
Yeah the dust was a killer, some fun trails though. Beautiful area to ride! We were wishing for rain the whole time there and didn’t get any... LOL thanks for checking out the video!

That’s a good question especially if you don’t have any previous experience with different machines. I would say either the grizzly 700 or the king quad 750 would be two really good choices. Both of them require low maintenance and you can pretty much ride them the way they come from the factory. Hope that helps you out thanks for checking out the video!

Hey G-Man.. Oh boy you’re right about that! When we got home and clean them they were totally packed with dirt. Yup it was a fun place to ride sure could have used some rain though. Thanks for checking out the video!
New to ATVin… Just bought a brand new Honda rancher what do you recommend for tires for the Black Hills? We don’t ride through mud and we don’t ride super rocky trails…. Are the stock tires OK or should I upgrade?
Hello Luke, the stock tires should be just fine for South Dakota and many other places as well. I would run the stock tires until they’re worn out and then upgrade to the Maxis bighorn 2.0 tires that’s what we did and I really like them. Congrats on the new machine! Thanks for checking out the video!
Man the sights are amazing. We have a good amount of elevation change down in southern ohio but the views out west are just breath taking. Really want to get out that way to ride some day.
Hi Jacob wow that’s a good question, actually kind of difficult to answer. Colorado has to be the top of the list for spectacular views for sure! Hatfield McCoy had some of the most cool trails in a really interesting area of West Virginia. We also really like the trails in Arkansas, Ozark national forest. They have that deep in the woods feeling. We also liked Windrock in Tennessee was very similar to Hatfield McCoy trail system but all contained in one trail system, I hope that made sense? I would say one of our funnest week long trips was Colorado just because of the amazing views. Hope that helps you out have fun on your trip this summer! Thanks for checking out the video!
@@kcatv9556 thanks! Makes sense. We did Taylor park last year and we all really loved it. This year we are between Alpine loop or Hatfield-McCoy. We are leaning towards Alpine Loop because of the views. Thanks
I'm excited for this series good buddy! Glad you made it out that way. Hope you found it to be worth the trip. By any chance did you locate any of the outhouses in the middle of nowhere? Oh, you're knocking out Custer peak right away. :-) there's the crapper! Alright, pack it up, this trip is done. I'm surprised they blocked the lookout balcony, but not the outhouse, especially post-covid. I know when we ran around there in 08, you would occasionally come across old foundations and stuff. I'm sure it's a lot easier to navigate out there now, at that time there was very little info to go on. Good times KC ATV crew.
Haha, yeah crapper review for Q I believe that was the only crapper we found out on the trails. Didn’t find any old foundations, or maybe we just missed them. The trip was definitely worth the drive we had a good time couldn’t have done without the dust though! I assume they didn’t have an app for your phone with the map back in 08. Couldn’t imagine riding those trails without the ability to have the map on our phone Thanks for checking out the video my friend! More to come.
@@kcatv9556 I hear you about the dust. We went in June, and supposedly it's usually pretty dry out there. We kind of lucked out and had some rain pass through throughout the time we were there to keep things at perfect conditions. One day we rode over to WY and had a storm come through on us. It was amazing how that trail changed from your typical hardpack into some seriously slick clay. It was amazing. Yeah In 08 smart phones existed (my dad and I had blackberries, and another guy had a windows phone) but they were nothing like how it is today, especially for Offroad navigation. My dad and one other guy had Garmin's, and we kind of would figure out where we wanted to get to, look around on a paper map to see which forest roads connected to that area, and then we would just kind of run down trails and see where they took us, revisiting the map when we came back to a marked road. I'm not sure what the rules and regs are now, but at the time I was out there, SD allowed access to orv traffic on trails that appeared to be traveled by other vehicles. So logging roads, two-tracks, any semblance of a vehicle track, were how we would make our way to our planned destination. Once in a while they would dead end, but most would eventually end up somewhere. We asked several rangers, and were told this was legal at that time. I should ask my dad if he still has any of our gps tracks from that trip. At that time, I don't think the Black Hills had the visitors it apparently sees now, judging by your video. In the week we were out there, we only ever passed 1 other rider (a local kid) throughout all of our rides. It was so significant to us, we stopped and talked to him for a while and asked him about it, and where everyone was. Coming from Northern WI, near Hurley, which has been a big riding destination forever, it was a very different feel having so many miles of riding opportunities, and virtually no one out there experiencing it. Very much felt like we were discovering a secret riding area, haha. Looks like the secret's out now, but that's ok. It's a very cool area that should be seen. And the tourism money is what will keep it going. I'd really like to go back again one of these days.

What is the scoop on having the temporary license? Were from Nebraska and ATVs aren't street legal here so we don't have these options as far as horn, license plate light, etc. Is this really needed? We plan on buying the forest permit.
We only bought the forest permit. We did ride on some of the roads but kept to a minimum. The folks at Mystic Hideaway office said highway patrol won’t mess with you since ATVs is so common running up and down the roads in that area. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@normsatv Wow thanks for the info Norm. Q was telling me the back country navigator app is just for android device. I only have an iPhone so that’s why I haven’t looked into it yet.
@@kcatv9556 i have android no longer works can see the map but no longer track routes save ect . The way they design this new version is stupid cause the old app version could do all that .
But i know they dump old app had someone re design new app from scratch and its garbage compared to old app . I delete the app cancel my subscription its usless if cant record save tracks ect .
If you have the old app on a old phone will still work but i got the new samsung 10 will not work with old app and is now no new one just sucks lol .
@@normsatv Oh man that’s crazy! Thank God I haven’t bought anything yet..
Where is the little storm shelter or Keebler House?
Hey Hill RZR, Man I have no idea. It’s somewhere in the trail system there at Custer peak. Thanks for checking out the video.
Hello. Great vid! What communications system you using?

@@kcatv9556 thank you!
Wonder if that little building you found was a old food cellar?
Tell you the truth I have no idea what it was. We were thinking storm cellar but it was very small inside.
What resort did you all stay at?
Hello Tracy, we stayed at Mystic Hills hideaway. They had cabins and a campground. Hope that helps you out thanks for checking out the video
What is the name of the app you used and can it operate without internet?
The app is called Avenza
It runs off your phones GPS reception so no cell service needed. It worked awesome couldn’t imagine running those trails without it.
I hope that helps you out thanks for watching!
@@kcatv9556 thank you very much!!! It will be a great help for us this coming summer as we are gonna be out there this summer 👌
@@kcatv9556 thanks, appreciate the info. Common sense goes a long ways.
I’ve rode this area on motorcycles, and In a car.....it’s 11hrs south of me ( I’m up 2.5hrs north of Q in Saskatoon ) and have always wanted to go down on a atv , you’ve peaked my interest even more haha. Thanks . Ps what is the place you stayed at ?
