  • Today we're going to be taking a look at the new Pironman case by Sunfounder for the Raspberry Pi 4. The case is a similar form factor to my original Pi desktop case but includes some nice new features like a power button, addressable RGB LEDs, fan control, a custom OLED stats display and integrated support for an M.2 SATA SSD.

    A fan cooling strategy that results in a case with slight positive pressure helps keep the internals clean as it's less likely to suck dust in from the outside. Could be another reason for having identical vent holes on both sides of the case.

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This only really works if you're filtering the intake air as well. The fan is drawing air in through open vents anyway, so dust is going to get into the case.

    While I found the case to be incredibly impressive, and super fun to build. I encountered difficulties in maintaining a consistent overclock due to it. Each time the fans activated, the system would experience crashes. The root cause of this issue remained elusive despite my efforts to identify it. The jumper system is a bit all over the place. I am sure it had something to do with that, but I gave up. As a resolution, I eventually transitioned to the Argon V2 case, which successfully passed all stress tests using the exact same overclock settings that had posed problems with the Pironman case.

      Glad I seen your reply. Was thinking of going for this case, but also have the Argon in mind as well. Think I will go with Argon.

      @@tonywright8342 I'm very happy with mine. I reached out to the makers of the Pironman case, got a replacement case, and the same situation. I am confident there is something not optimal about the design of their case. I just wish I could pinpoint what it is.

    I've just taken delivery of this a couple of days ago. There is a glitch whereby if the pironman script is running, it interrupts video play and audio output. I emailed support and was told they are aware of it. The PWM used by the RGB light conflicts with the system's audio PWM. Switching audio output to HDMI didn't solve unless you hook up a USB audio to output the audio. Great review anyway.

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for pointing this out, I'll see if I have the same issue. I didn't notice any issues with video playback but I didn't have any audio connected at the time.

    The case would work pretty well with the Indiedroid Nova. You won't have to use the SD ribbon card, but everything else seems it would fit. I reached out to the manufacturer of the case and they stated that it was supported, which I understand where they're coming from. Either way it wouldn't take much to get it to work.

    Hi I have a Few Questions,
    The white colour connecting wire strip for the GPIO Brindge, it keeps coming out from both end. Is that supposed to be that loose.
    2) the micro sd card is not fitting inside and I’m afraid to put too much pressure on it. Does that work like same regular phones sd cards slots where it makes like a clipping sound as it goes in and to pull it out it required to slightly push in and it comes out with a clicking sound both times.
    3) there’re 4 thermal pads, are there 2 spares or do I need to put the remaking on the raspberry pin right where the thermal top tower is fitted. Please note, if I only put two thermal pads on tower base and fit it on to P of pi I noticed there’s some space between the Towers thermal pad as well as raspberries processor. Is that space normal or do it need to put the thermal pads in the processor as well as tower and sandwich them so there’s no space.
    Kindly address these concerns at the earliest possibility thankyou.

    If you can healp that would be great. I've got the case as well with a pi 4 8GB. I have installed the pironman files and the screen and lights come on a change properly but when I do a reboot either through the shutdown command or long press the power button it won't come back up. Some of the board light come on but there is no internet connection to remote to and the case screen and rgb light don't come on. Any ideas? also I have connected a monitor but there is no output.

    Michael, best regards. What recommendation do you have to control the temperature of Lattepanda Delta 3 to use it as a gamer?

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Delta 3 has pretty good onboard cooling, just make sure that it is well ventilated (don't block off the airflow paths if you put it into a case). Alternately, adding a larger 100 or 120mm Noctua fan on top of the Delta 3 would probably also improve temperatures.

    Just picked this case up off Amazon. Decided to finally use the pi4 model b 2gb my friend bought me years ago.. back when microcenter had it on sale for $35. Figured a mini PC case felt better than mounting it on the 7" eviciv touchscreen monitor. The biggest question I have to ask myself right now is... How to use the pi.. maybe pi-hole to get started.. but I can run other things too right? XD

    In regards to the fan on the side panel, could you use washers to raise it just enough so it doesn't hit the acrylic side panel? I agree, the sticker showing isn't great.

    • @MichaelKlements
      @MichaelKlements  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you could quite easily fix the problem with washers, or I thought about just laser cutting the hexagon pattern out to make an open vent. It's just not something that can be done with what is included in the kit - and the fan really shouldn't be like that either, the hub should always have some clearance between it and the face.

Very unlikely somebody uses Raspberry Pi as a main computer, even for a home theater it's a bit underpowered. So the case is just a nice toy to impress your friends.
