  • Today we're taking a look at the Blade 3, a new SBC from Mixtile based on the RK3588 SOC. It's got a unique 4-lane PCIe gen 3 port on the side which allows you to stack them to build compact clusters with low latency communication between the nodes.

    Hi. Great video.
I also got the board and reviewed it. I like it a lot. I helped working on the Armbian images for it with RPardini and Monkablyat.
I did have a problem with it last week. My NVMe died while using it. Not sure what's the cause. I was using it and suddenly it crashed while still running in memory but unable to do anything. I re-installed Armbian to eMMC but the NVMe is dead.
Now using the M.2 with a 6 x sata adapter and I'll use 4 SATA ssd's with it using it as fast NAS and secondary desktop.
    I like that it has 2.5GbE, fast M.2/PCIe + mini-PCIe.
I'm also missing a full sized USB port on it, and also mentioned the inwards sd-reader that's a bit strange. My temperatures were different but I max out the cores for +30minutes and a lot hotter room.
I didn't know your channel. Subscribed and looking forward seeing more. Greetings, NicoD.

      Hi NicoD,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and thanks for your contribution to the Armbian image!
I'd expect my temperatures to be lower than most others as the room temperature was quite low, I think in future tests I need to get the room up to a more typically room/office temperature before doing the thermal tests.
Thank you for the sub, I'll head over to your channel shortly.

I also received my Mixtile Blade 3 after having waited one whole year (yes, I was a crowdfunder of the project). Now I'm trying to get four such systems runinng in Mixtile's cluster box, but the whole cluster does have a handful of flaws.

I'd love to see a water cooled mini gaming case for the single board but also
maybe attached graphics card support. I'd love to see what the cluster looks like
if it were in a pico form factor gaming case that was water cooled and could play
steam games like the Rock Pi 5. Which uses the same CPU, I think. A cluster at a
good cost could be a great option for gaming replacement and work replacement.

very interesting... first time I've such a clean cluster setup... I guess it helps having that as the goal from the ground up.... a bit pricey tho... but that's to be expected with small quantities.... I can't wait to see how the clustering goes... I got high hopes :)
    THANKS!!!

Interesting mix of technologies. I'd like to see this compared to x86 SBCs like the Zima Board which has much better software support.

It's an interesting product but I don't like the price vs performance. What good is fitting 75 of these in a 2U when they end up costing more than a traditional x86 HPC server ?

I agree, I think the price is going to be the biggest hurdle they're going to face. It is quite significantly more expensive than most other RK3588 boards as well.

All these Chinese board makers, but none makes good software support , it's a waste on such great hardware. I dont recommend buying, when software support is supported they don't maintain it and drop it and move on the the next board, leaving you in the dust while they keep pushing for new sales for never boards. not saying this is the case with mixtile, but majority of boardmakers do this, its a bloody mess.

It's definitelty the main reason why Raspberry Pi is still so popular despite having much older hardware.

What’s the thermal camera you used with your phone?

An Infiray P2 Pro - it's linked in the video description.

Have you spend Your own money to get those?
    This can change whole perspective.
For everything else - its yet another rk3588 board with same features, just different form factor. You can get same slot from m.2 on most rk3588 boards.

Not on this board, I did mention in the video that Mixtile sent me the board and I've got the "Includes Paid Product Placement" banner on.
