    Possibly the prettiest 1950s SLR, the Wirgin Edixa-Mat Model B and model B-L are strudy, reliable, and fun cameras with a great feature set for their time. These cameras would have been the hallmark of a professional 35mm photographer in the 1950s and their M42 lens mount (with flappy-paddle aperture control!) meant they could use any of the common M42 lenses on the market. This camera came with a Killfitt 4CM f/2.8 double-extension macro lens, an all-in-one walk-around lens that could go from distant to macro with just a few helicoid turns.

    To change the DIN/ASA dial…. Lift up the rewind dial, hold it firmly, and on it’s underside, you can feel a small knob that will spin to change the film speed notation.

    Beautiful camera David. I have the sister lens to yours. A Kilfitt - Makro E 4CM f/2.8 mounted on a Thagee Exakta Varex IIa camera. That is a sweet lens. I almost sold it last week but decided it was too sweet to give up. I did sell it's big sister the Kilfitt - Makro 90mm f/2.8 tough. What beautiful lenses. They operate like butter. Sorry about spouting off but it's so nice to see someone with a similar lens. What a gorgeous combination you have there. No wonder you have been saving it for later in the month. Thanks for sharing another unusual camera with us. Stay safe David.

    A college underclassman had the 1/30-1/500 sec. Edixa Prismaflex that his older brother sent to him from his duty station in West Germany. It was equipped with an Isco 50mm lens and operated like a "Nikon S2 with a mirror box." Speaking of the 40mm f/2.8 Makro-Kilar, it was on my "I'll get it someday" list until a 55mm 3.5 Micro-Nikkor became available after the f/2.8 version arrived on the marketplace.

      Nice! I haven't used the Kilffitt yet, but I'm excited to. I do love the 55mm f/3.5 Micro-Nikkor, though. It's one of the sharpest macro lenses I've used. I think the Pentax 100mm f/2.8 is the only one that's sharper, and it's about 30 years younger, so that stands to reason.

    Flash sync on a Mat reflex would be at the 1/30. Non L cameras would be 1/25. At least according to the Edixa reflex guide.
    I recently got a Edixa Mat Flex MOD B that needed repairs (Advance lever jammed and shutter release button not working), so I sent it off but the quote was about 3 or 4 times the cost of the camera. So I decided to keep a lookout and found a Mat Reflex Mod B-L, same as yours, beautiful camera! Very much excited to start using it.

    Many thanks - I am just restoring the leatherette on my Dads CL from the mid sixties. Do you know if the camera takes any M42 lens or are they dedicated to the Edixa. I have the 50 f2.8 Iscolor but would like to add a 28mm. I have read about different M42 threads and other possible issues.

      They should take any M42 except the Mamiya MX M42 lenses. M42 was the default standard for a long time and all (except the special Mamiya) M42 lenses are the same mount.

    To adjust the asa value you have to lift the knob up and turn a little piece that turns the whole asa number wheel.

    Hello, beautiful camera. In my camera to change the film memory the film-rewind knob is lifted and then the dial below can be accessed.I have two the Edixa Flex, and the Edixa Reflex -B, one has a pentaprism and the other has a waist-finder that can be exchanged. They are beautiful but the mechanical solutions are a bit heterogeneous. I am not going to say much about the manufacturer because you surely plan to tell it in your next video, only to say that he self learned and that he worked a long time for Leitz, I had never seen a lens like that you showed, my cameras came with two 50 mm f2.8 one xenar and the other cuminar, Schneider-Kreuznach and Steinheil München respectively. Greetings from Gothenburg to you and all your visitors I wish you the best in these difficult times.

      Thank you, Marcelo! I did not have any good information about Wirgin as a company to share in these videos.
      The Kilffitt is an uncommon lens. I didn't know what this had until it arrived and it was a pretty nice surprise. Kilfitt made some really high-spec lenses back in the day and I suspect that this one will still hold up well.

    The models D and DL are almost identical, they had an additional range of slow speeds on a Second slow speed dial. Otherwise it’s the same camera, I have a DL and it has rapidly become my favorite 35mm SLR, my trusty Nikkormat has been collecting dust.
    To adjust the film ISO dial, you lift the knob up and adjust from the underside. The camera has a few quirks to learn, like an Exakta, but less annoying to shoot,

    • @DavidHancock

      Most likely some dirt or grease is in there and has it frozen up. The easiest solution is to use some 91% rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and then run that swab around the adjustment dial or ring. Do that a number of times and the alcohol should seep into the grease or dirt and loosen it. If that fails, the camera may need a repair. Fortunately, there's no meter on these so setting the ASA is only a reminder and a repair isn't required for it to work. You can always write the film type and speed on masking tape and put that on the bottom of the camera as a reminder.

    I have a beat up version of the Edixa Prismat that I'm thinking about fixing up. I'm not sure if the all shutterspeeds are accurate and the bulb mode only works every other time I fire the shutter. What is the slow speed dial for? How does it work?

    • @DavidHancock

      Wirgin is an obscure camera maker for sure. I forget when they stopped producing cameras, maybe the 60s? Their gear was super well built and used top-notch materials. Their 30s and 40s cameras with Schneider optics were very interesting.

      I have one of the original Edinex with the collapsible Schneider 50mm f2 lenses. Built like a tank. He front element of the lens looks like it went through a sandblasting, but the rest of the camera is in good condition. I found a “replacement” front element. I transplanted the lens to my Sony mirrorless. Very sharp lens. The mechanics of the camera need some work.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Edinex is exactly the camera I was thinking of when I wrote that. It's on my list to try someday. I'd like to do another couple of theme months for 30s and 40s cameras, but right now I don't have many of those.

    • @franklynLP
      @franklynLP 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidHancock "Super well build"? Edixa gear was known back in the day for their bad build quality. If you look into german literature about these cameras, you mostly find articles about how they just threw together parts without much quality control and hoped that it worked. I opend about 5 of them up over the years and they were all overly complicated and hard to work on. All the Mat-Reflexes had a shutter mechanism prone to failure and the only good part on them were the prisms. Finding working ones today is hard - people only buy them for the great M42 optics and cause they look good on paper.

    • @AwesomeFantasyXI
      @AwesomeFantasyXI 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@franklynLP I have just recently bought an Edixa Mat Reflex, it looks to be very well built. But I have heard some say that quality was bad and others say they were good. My guess would be that all/most of the "bad" quality ones have been long disposed of. Whilst the ones we find today are the ones that were well put together, and that is what makes them so rare.
      I have only started using my Edixa but I believe that it is probably better made than my Voigtlander Vitessa T (Another West German camera from the same time period). Though I am not an expert and this is just my opinion, both seem to be excellent cameras.

    HOW many cameras do you have?!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so many any more. I've been selling most of the collection (peaked around 1,500) because I'd rather use my cameras than keep them clean and unused. Maintaining a collection of anything is a lot of work and the things pretty quickly own your life. So I'm down to fewer than 50 now, for sure. I think I have about ten in regular use right now, and my goal is to get down to only ten, period, and have them be the ones I shoot with. Future camera manuals will almost exclusively be cameras, like the ones this month, that I buy specifically to make manuals for and then re-sell. This Wirgin and the KW Praktina FX I'll use, but the rest this month I won't.
