    Possibly the prettiest 1950s SLR, the Wirgin Edixa-Mat Model B and model B-L are strudy, reliable, and fun cameras with a great feature set for their time. These cameras would have been the hallmark of a professional 35mm photographer in the 1950s and their M42 lens mount (with flappy-paddle aperture control!) meant they could use any of the common M42 lenses on the market. This camera came with a Killfitt 4CM f/2.8 double-extension macro lens, an all-in-one walk-around lens that could go from distant to macro with just a few helicoid turns.

    Thank you for realizing the beauty and worth of these Wirgin cameras! I think the Edixa line of SLR’s are some of the most nicely designed, and best looking cameras going!
    They seem to be ignored, and/or maligned by some, but I love them! I have one of each of the major models from the first SLR through the last in the mid 1970’s.
    If you read the Wirgin history, they had several ex Ekakta, and Zeiss technicians working for them, and their designer was Heinz Wasske, who went on to design the iconic Rollei 35 miniature 35 mm camera!
    The Edixa-Mat Reflexes have an aura, and magic about them which you need to experience in person!
    Nice video as usual! 👌

    Hello, your videos have been very helpful! Thank you! I've just got my first camera ever and it's this model or an older/newer one since it has a waist-level viewfinder (my grandfather gave it to me as a gift). I really am a beginner with photography and as I was trying to understand how in general a camera works, wondering if starting from such a model would have been possible, I found myself having problems with taking a shot. The fact is that I do everything you do but the process doesn't work every time. I don't know why this happens, but when I push the button it won't click. And then other times it suddenly and smoothly works. What am I doing wrongly?
    Also, am I supposed to wind the shutter every time I take a shot?
    Sorry for the stupid questions but five hours ago I literally had no idea of how a camera works and right now I'm dealing with a type of one where almost nothing can be taken for granted. Thank you again if you'll take the time to reply to me.

      Thank you and no stupid questions there at all. Understanding an old film camera for the first time is like asking someone who's only driven a modern automatic car to go into a 60s car with a gate shifter.
      So yes you do need to advance the film every time. That and the shutter to fire. That could be the sole issue that you're having.
      The best thing you can do while learning is practice different settings with it without film. Hey a sense of how the mechanics work. After you feel a bit more comfortable pick up a roll of 200 or 400 ISO and see how it goes. One thing's for certain, using a camera line this will change your photography without a doubt.

    Hey David, I've had a Zenit E for a while so I'm accustomed to most settings, but Im still confused about the M/A slider - I know its manual and auto, but what does it allow me to do?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's for aperture control -- manually stopping down the aperture like a pre-set Zenit lens or automatic stop-down like most every camera after 1955 has, IIRC.

    my film rewound too deep into the casette without being able to pull it out, is that fine? will they still be able to access the film?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's fine. Labs have the tools to retrieve leaders.

    question , I'm new to fil photography and was wondering on where you loaded the film and then shoot 3 times , does that subtract from the 24 shoots each film roll has? so you would be left with 21 shoots?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question and no it does not. The frame count is for the usable images.

    • @1911geek
      @1911geek 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Manufactory give x amount of frames leads for loading usually 3. Some folks during hard times everything is expensive try to salvage these frames and get 27-28 from a 24 exposures roll. Which is possible if one load film in total darkness making sure the take up spool securely take up and not slip. Having said that Nikon Fe, FA, FM2 the camera will override manual and preset a fix shutter speed so operator can't manipulate to gain extra frames

    I checked on Butkus.org and there is a manual for this camera,but it doesn't list the sync speed.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. The manual lacks a lot. I picked up "Praktica, Praktina, Pentacon, Eddixaflex Guide" by Kenneth Tydings an that filled in some gaps.

    can this camera have problems with the sealing foam? because I don't see anyone talking about it. and I can barely see them on yours and even on mine

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can, yes. I have a video on how to replace light seals with cotton yarn and it's worth doing on any camera you use often.

    I have the Edixa Reflex and the German manual says the sync speed is 1/25. Maybe its the same for this camera.

      None. This camera does not need batteries.

    I know it probably sounds stupid but how do you change the film iso?
    Is it the iso reminder knob?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no meter in the camera so you'd need to adjust it on whatever meter you're using.

    • @markrawlinson7018
      @markrawlinson7018 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidHancock so if i just wack a 400 iso in then use a phone app, set a 400 iso for the values?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup. But first make sure your app is correct. a lot of phone manufacturers play fast and loose with their sensor sensitivities. So apps are unequally reliable across the spectrum (this even applies with iPhones if the app is available in both systems.) So to test it set the ISO on the phone app to your film speed and then on a sunny day with the sun behind you take a meter reading off something like a bush or a sidewalk. At f/16, the shutter speed should be the same as your film speed (so 1/400th for 400 ISO.) Or at least close to that (so 1/500th would be fine, 1/250th would be fine.) If it's something like 1/25th then there's a huge problem.
