The Spirit Of Audacity Lives On

  • Several months ago, the very popular free and open source audio editor Audacity was purchased by a company and begin making some very questionable decisions, such as adding telemetry and adding age restrictions to the software. This caused the FOSS community to essentially abandon Audacity, but several forks sprang up, including Tenacity...

    I've never understood how such a project can be sold. Sold by whom? It was my impression back when this was in the news that the telemetry was removed along with the age restriction which was apparently a mistake of some sort by a lawyer adding boilerplate. The Muse guy in some videos back then expressed excitement about joining Audacity to improve the UI but made no mention of a takeover, at which point I figured that an article would soon appear somewhere and clarify what's going on but I haven't seen one. I can't make any sense of this situation even all these months later.

    • @Cuperino
      @Cuperino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I suggest looking up Michael Turnel (Tux Digital)‘a coverage on this topic. The Audacity project is pretty much alive and operating in the spirit of the Free Software and Open Source community. This is why forks like the ones shown here can continue to incorporate new features developed by the Audacity project.

      iirc Tantacrul did mention about Audacity getting bought by Musegroup, but on his video about this subject, he decided to put more emphasis on the program's origins and stuff like that, rather than how the ownership transaction would work. He had already started working for Musegroup since he became the lead designer of Musescore.

      @@Cuperino basically you're saying the exact opposite of what DT is saying. Then why are people forking it?

    • @Cuperino
      @Cuperino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rawmaterials3909 DT is using his own definition for open source and free software that isn't that of the Open Source Initiative nor the Free Software Foundation's.
      People forked Audacity not because it's no longer in the spirit of open source but because Muse Group were making unilateral decisions that the community didn't agree to. Among those decisions was the addition of invasive telemetry using libraries from Google. That has since been removed and replaced with their own custom made telemetry solution that is more focused on project needs and nowhere nearly as invasive.
      Other people forked because of a proposed license change from GPL 2 to GPL 3. This change would enable using GPL 3 libraries in to develop more functionality. Others contributors just didn't agree with the new Contributor's License Agreement, which gives right to publish versions of the software under other licenses. Thus enabling the possibility to distribute Audacity in software stores that forbid GPL software, such as Apple's AppStore.
      This last thing could be argued not to be in the spirit of open source, but using telemetry is not against the spirit.

    • @rawmaterials3909
      @rawmaterials3909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Cuperino Free and open source is not only and strictly related to source code availability.
      Sure, as you say telemetry is not directly related to open/closed source debate, but I think DT uses a broader perspective that involves something IT people still lack a lot: ethics.
      And yes, it's true that he doesn't align with the FSF conduct... but I don't see this as a flaw or a demerit. Actually, just the opposite.

    Found interesting differences from the AUR -git packages:
    1. Audacium:
    - in conflict with package audacity and gives executable audacity
    - a gtk2 application
    2. Tenacity:
    - does not conflict with audacity package and gives executable tenacity
    - a gtk3 application
    The functionality of both apps should be the same, but these technical differences may play a role in deciding which one to keep too.

    Muse Group really fucked up Audacity's reputation, but most of the things that pissed off the user base are now either reverted (like the 13+ years old age restriction) or is actually useful (the telemetry about usage and mostly crashes iirc).
    I was about to jump ship and abandon Audacity when I spend a whole afternoon reading about what actually was added. It's sad to see such a terrible P.R. behavior, but aside from that the program is far from ruined.
    The good part of it being open source is that the Audacity code will tell exactly what info it sends so that whole telemetry part was not actually harmful.

    Unfortunately, the whole point of the video falls short because Audacity has neither telemetry nor age restriction. You can look that up. They abandoned telemetry plans back in May, they revised privacy policy in July. All you get is an update checker which is a standard feature these days and can be easily disabled, and a crash reporter which you don't even have to use.
    You are also looking at collective number of contributors for both Audacity and Audacium/Tenacity, because, you know, that's how git forks work: people who did the work before the fork also get the credit. Like, as a former Audacity contributor, I'm right there in the list of Tenacity contributors although I never contributed to Tenacity directly :)

    Buy outs always mess up great software
    ICQ bought by AOL
    Skype bought by Microshaft
    And prob many others
    It sucks, as Audacity was a replacement for Adobe audition which was overpriced and became cloud based.

    How is it even possible to "buy" and "take over" a free & open-source project, without asking all the code contributors and users for permission first?
    And how can we make sure that such things won't happen in the future with other free & open source projects?

    Without a clear roadmap for future development, I don't think any Audacity fork is really going to take off. Just ripping out the telemetry and making minor changes to the UI isn't enough. Lots of people will be just fine with using Audacity despite the telemetry or they'll stick with the old version. Unfortunately, it's hard to bring something new to the table with such a mature product that already does 99% of what people want.

    • @Bob-of-Zoid
      @Bob-of-Zoid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, now that Muse (the company that owns Audacity) basically told their lead developers that they will no longer have rights to their own code anymore, some just may jump ship and join a fork. On the other hand though I think Muse is a actual company that pays their employees, so they may just stay to feed their families, it all depends on the details I guess. Also, they haven't been at this but a few months, and may need some time to get their shit together. Let's hope they elect a few leaders, just so they can have some direction and it isn't total anarchy.

      @AlexandreProkoudine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bob-of-Zoid "Well, now that Muse basically told their lead developers that they will no longer have rights to their own code anymore" - you might want reading the CLA again. As per agreement, developers and conributors grant Muse Group _non-exclusive_ rights to the source code. Audacity is still GPLv2 software.

    • @troys.9188
      @troys.9188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there was a miscommunication of what Muse group was doing and the community was surprised. It seems like they have reversed all of the initial disagreements and are starting the huge refresh. Check out version 3.1 which added big quality of life improvements.

    Telemetry does not go against free and open source ideology. Audacity is still an open source project. As much as I hate telemetry, you're just spreading false information.
