    Admittedly, my look at the changes for Audacity are superficial. I"m not a dev, and I'm not an audio engineer, so if things have changed in the underlying areas in Audacity, I wouldn't know about it.

    So telemetry got added and nothing else ? Got it, no wonder every distro still ships the old version.

    One of the main problems I have with audacity is wxWidgets. It’s old, slow, and bad, especially the MacOS and Linux ports. It’s the reason I always run the Windows version in Wine on Linux machines.
    It’s also compiled against the wrong version of wxWidgets on the Flatpak and Arch Linux, making it annoying to use on both.

      @Ort Qt is open source, and is dual licensed under a commercial license (primarily used by companies such as Autodesk and Blackmagic for their commercial Maya and Davinci Resolve products, respectively) and an open source (LGPLv2.1+) license that has some extra requirements, however they are both the same toolkit. From what I can tell Audacity could easily just use the open source version. They could also switch to GTK+, but libraries for that tend to be less stable on Windows and macOS.

      @DistrosProjects ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Ort I never actually said that. You are allowed to make closed source software without paying as long as you are okay with certain terms found on the Qt website, such as users being allowed to link the program against any version of the Qt library that they want (rather than forcing users to use a bundled Qt library) and acknowledging that you are using LGPL-licensed software.

    dnf on fedora says its version is 3.1.3. Not sure if that is from one of the optional fusion repos, or what, the info and search commands does not seem to include that information.

    From what i understand, the audacity team provides cmake flags to compile the programm without any of the telemetry. So it surprises me that there isn't any "audacity-noTelemetry" or something in the AUR. When it comes to new features there are working on some things, but I wouldn't be expecting any massive changes in the ui. It took musescore almost 3 years (and counting) to overhaul the program, it will take probably a lot more for audacity.

    you may want to give it another shot now that VST3 and realtime effects have been added.

    I have forever despised Audacity's user interface. My weak little eyes prefer things in dark mode, and although Audacity has a dark mode, it looks even worse than the basic interface, because windows keeps some elements of the UI brighr white. I am an artist, and a nice UI has always been something I look for in a program or software. I like some of the very recent changes, putting the recording and playback devices in the ribbon, making some logical menu organization improvements, and that such, but it still looks terrible.

      @@TheLinuxCast no. It got updated 2 weeks ago to 3.1 and Arch were actually waiting this long for the Audacity dependencies to get a stable release instead of packaging unstable version (what Audacity had as requirement) and afaik its wxwidget that got updated from wxgtk to wxwidgets.

    Just use Reaper, or Ardour. Yes, there's a pretty decent learning curve but you'll get better results and won't have to worry about telemetry.

    Never liked using it on Linux Mint. Always crashed the Cinnamon desktop environment and the time wasted waiting to use it was so annoying. Ocenaudio does what Audacity can't do, not crash the DE.

    I will say things are about as cruddy. Though I am having some serious vst issues so that is me. Not that they don't work just they refuse to fucking stay. I.E. I use it, that settings stays, I use it again for something else change the settings preview says it change aaand nope did not change. Sometime for the change to stay it has to be changed live sometimes it has to be done before hitting preview.
    I also absolutely fucking loathe pasting stuff in in behind something else and it moves that track 10 feet out and somehow how I just keep getting this random snap line poppin gup that is atrocious to get rid of. It is a lazy, almost had something mess.
    Edit: 2hours later got cakewalk the free one, and I will say there is a distinct difference in my audio quality nothing changed I still have my crappy snowball, still hold it how I always do but cakewalk picks up a lot of my words much better oddly. Audacity actually causes shitty recordings.
