  • If you keep your pool open all year, it is good to know how to change the pump speed settings and timers on your Hayward variable speed pump. These pumps ideally run on lower speeds in the winter and higher speeds during the summer.

Update mid-July 2023-this schedule has worked great all summer to help keep the pool balanced and clean.

Very informative video thank you, how often do you back wash your sand filter(if you have one)?

I have a cartridge filter and I usually clean it every month in the summer and every 2-3 months in the winter. How often you should backwash really depends on how much use your pool gets, if you use a skimmer sock and how much debris gets into your pool from trees, grass, etc.

Update Spring 2024: Due to pollen season, I started this summer schedule in March instead of May.

Which model is that? Is that the 2603? That is what I just installed today and it is so quiet I’m not sure if I’m moving enough water. I have a Hayward sand filter so I don’t want to try and push to much through it since they can’t handle the amount of gal per minute as a cartridge filter. This is where I wish I had a flow meter. I’m on 1 1/2” piping on a 16x32 in ground and my pump is only 10 ft from the pool. Right now I’m using 2250, 1500 and 1100 for my 3 timers running 24hrs

Mine is Aquarite 900 series, AQR925. It is 2 years old. Your schedule sounds good to me!

Thanks! Must be doing ok since my salt cell is still generating at 1100rpm. I heard they can generate as low as 11-15 gpm.

I have noticed that my skimmer suction is not strong enough and my pool is not as clean as it should be. What's your recommendation? I also have the Hayward pump setup.

Try cleaning your pump basket and cartridge filter. (I have videos on both of these procedures.)

    Pool Pump Schedule May 2024
    9-9:30am-3000 rpm
    9:30am-8:30pm-2000 rpm
    8:30pm-9pm-3000 rpm
    9pm-9am-1200 rpm
Trying a slightly different schedule for Summer 2024. Find what works best for your pool depending on size, amount of use, amount of debris getting in pool each day, etc. Would love to see what schedule others use. Please post your schedule in comments.

What would you suggest on a 20x40 for pool compared to your schedule? Approx 33,000 gallons.
