As a South African that was slightly involved in this, this a typical example of how the media can distort what's really happening in order to sensationalize a story and always in a negative light.
      The facts are :
      - a number of NGO's that deal with the homeless were involved in setting up and running this shelter
      - they tried there utmost to make the environment pleasant ( how do I know; I was tasked as a volunteer to purchase and assist in setting up a PA system for entertainment purposes for the homeless staying there )
      - I'm also know for a fact how hard the employees of the NGO's worked in order to make this work for the homeless
      - it is a fact that there were some of the homeless that didn't want to be there as shown in the video and they are the same people that will not go to a shelter for assistance because they have an issue with authority and are most of the time the cause of any disturbance s inside this shelter
      - these very trouble makers are the reason why the police are there in the first place
      - the same trouble makers that scaled the fences and caused trouble in the neighborhood where these shelters were setup.
      - they are also the same people that were not aware of didn't care about you facts of those none covid related illnesses / pre existing issue's and decided to spread rumors in order to meet their own agendas
      - when the lockdown was lifted, nobody reported on all the homeless that were greatful for this place and opted to stay in shelter in order to go through the process of being rehabilitate back into society and getting of the streets
I'm very disappointed in DW for creating this narrative. I'm normally a fan of their's, but after watching this, I have to wonder how accurate their reporting actually is.

    • @1Evasen
      @1Evasen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Bonita Smith There’s only so long a lockdown can be plausible before unwinding everything else even with people complying.
Besides, when the rights of a few override the rights of the majority, then democracy isn’t at play.
The government isn’t formed to decide for the majority of citizens, it is there to facilitate the rights & the constitution for those citizens in which it embodies.
Citizens aren’t kids, they’re adults that are capable & have to ultimately deal with their own lives & be responsible for it - not the state.
The point of the lockdown wasn't to STOP the infection, (that’s impossible without testing kits), it was to SLOW it down to avoid the hospitals being overwhelmed if we all got it in unison.
I’m staying in NYC, and it’s tense here, not from the actual virus, but from the paranoia, illogical thinking & ironic inhuman conditions. Sweden, Taiwan, South Korea & other places didn’t go on lockdown, and are taking sensible approaches. Please look into Sweden. I know it’s a tense time, and people are doing their best to follow the guidelines but as we do that, regardless of where we are - we MUST look at the data, facts & be rational without jumping on the hysteria bandwagon. We need multiple models to deal with this situation.

a lot of people who are homeless go to shelters to sleep, or have a setup where they have a tent or some kind of a cardboard shelter so they are not sleeping rough in the open. Others are able to stay with friends or relatives and circulate amongst the group just spend nights on the couch or nights in the living room, and others can sleep in cars or unused buildings such as churches when they are not holding services. I think there is more of a desire for freedom to choose what one wants to do with their life then a particular problem with sleeping in the arrangements that have been made for them. No one wants to be held in a detention camp no one wants to be in an internment camp whatever the reason, and whatever their life was before.

With great power comes even greater responsibility in making critical decisions during this time of crisis. Don't be so quick to judge, especially if you don't have all the facts. As someone that was slightly involved in this, this a typical example of how the media can distort what's really happening in order to sensationalize a story and always in a negative light.
