I liked the way how you clarified with drone footage that it’s not a place to be in. For a complete beginner never hit water, it’s high quality foundations

Droning while competing is a bit far fetch haha. But the footage during the comp was no problem, pressing the film-button before heading down is completely automatic. If there was any hastle I wouldnt spend time on it during competitions, but its nice to share that perspective:)

The contests never happen in the same location successively or maybe even at all. Limits are set for species as well, I would imagine with some thought into what sizes for what species and even what species make the target list in the first place. The contest is likely the highest concentration of conservatively-minded, sustainably-driven marine hunters tbh
Any comp I’ve done has a a max fish weigh in example last weekend was a 3 fish comp so in terms of divers and amount of fish there it really wasn’t a lot
When I saw the number of boats I had similar thoughts, but seeing the fish caught by each spearo, it didn't seem a lot compared to what gets caught commercially on a regular basis in that region.

Amusing to see the money available to the different teams. Watched the Kiwi team prep. Did their own scouting, tight budgets etc. The US (J Lee) was a step up from the Kiwis. This British team, have much more resources. Tahiti though, congrats. Pasifika represent!
How do you know what resources the British team had? Everything was virtually self funded by the competitors and including myself as the manager. I did some fundraising but each participant was out of pocket at least £3000. We have no sponsors at all.
I saw a massive tuna in the area 150kg+. Shit was AMAZING! I was with Chus from team spain in late summer. He said he never encountered one there. The Tuna aswell as a HUGE Conger and i to FInnish it off i shot a 4.5kg Seabass! What an amazing day!!!!
Man with so many boats on the water you would be lucky to see a fish let alone shoot one your team did a real good job all things considered shoot straight Grumpy

Yes, Europe and African nations are ranked by the Euro-African championships, North, Central & South American by the Pan American championships and I think the Pacific nations like Tahiti, New Zealand & Australia are ranked by the Inter Pacific championships.

Not really, it's difficult and sorts the wheat from the chaff. Nothing more humbling than diving the exact same area, shooting very little and then seeing someone else with a huge string of fish.
231 dives? No thanks. I might get in 50 on a really good day. Our comp is in the summer when the water is warm and viz is good. I normally just sign up to get the shirt.
This is not what spearfishing is about. Spearfishing is supposed to be a sustainable way to catch food and enjoy beautiful landscapes, not catching as many barely edible mullets as you can.
Daniel, have you ever made it to Florida for the St Pete Open? You should seriously consider coming across the pond if you can find a boat etc to use for the contest.

It was massive, along the Fingal stretch looking for flathead. I was surprised it didn't touch the bottom, must have been 3-4m fin to fin.

All was donated to a local charity to feed less fortunate people. They were really happy to get all the fresh fish.
