    What is your biggest fear or danger when spearfishing?

    • @Timbuctoo
      @Timbuctoo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That my son has something happen to him when I'm out there spearfishing. He spends a long time on the bottom and a freak out thinking he might not come up.

      Always an issue. Long surface intervals can help reduce the risk of blackout.

    I had 2 boats ran over my float while I was literally 10m from shore. Legally boats have to stay at least 50m away from shore( at least in my country). In 1 occasion the boat driver had the audacity to stop and shout at me saying he was gonna run me over internally. That's when I pointed the 100 straight to his foot and he cooled off. Moral of the story, BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. It's frustrating to lose a fish but it's even more frustrating to get run over.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sounds like that guy was asking for trouble, what a loser. In this case we were maybe 100m from shore and I would have thought a large ferry boat would keep its distance. Definitely have to be aware of your surroundings!

      @@DanielMannI am a free diver and a scuba diver . Although I am young I am an island boy (Cyprus) and have been in the sea almost daily since 7years old. Next time you are on a tourist ship. Pay attention to the captain. You will soon realise that it's a Miracle that accidents don't happen daily. It's either going to be a guy from a 3rd world country that doesn't even know how to swim. Or he/she is only paying attention for other crafts not people. Usually the small ships are the worst because they cruise closer to shore .

    Τhat engine-prop noise was crazy but you get used to it when fishing near ports.
    Those scorpion fish are one of the best tasting fish you can find and paired with a Mamos beer are just perfect !

    Similar issues with boat in Italy too. The law in Italy states that boats must keep more than 100 meters from a buoy with a "diver down" flag, but there is no penalty if they fail to do so, so it's really dangerous. And many people who drive boats do not know what a "diver down' flag is. And many boaters who do know just don't care.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a really close call in 2022 diving in Salento. Sail boat was metres from running me over. I got it on video also. If you search on TH-cam ‘why spearfishing in Italy is dangerous’ you will see it!

    Hello Daniel, thank you for your videos. I am Albanian and also a rookie at spearfishing, i love your videos cause you explain what is happening at the same time and i can learn from you! As for the grrek case there are some greek minorities in our south as we always respected them and did not masacre them during the WW2 while greek army massacred albanian in north west greece, the so called "cam massacre"!! Do not listen to those brainwashed greeks who fall for their nationalistic corrupted greek government's propaganda which says where ever there is ancient greek ruins are greek lands! The same logic they do not apply in southern Italy for example! Only in southern Albania where the government is much weaker!

    LOL, Come one, you're supposed to be an experience diver no? How come no surface indicators you are diving there? Or were you deliberately diving on one of the routes of one of the local ferries, hoping the fishing would be better there because, heck, no one safety conscience would be spearfishing there to suck it dry LOL. Plus why would anyone think Albania is so dangerous, ur in a holiday resort area. And yeah LOL I am a diver and had my share of jet skis and boats up to tankers around me, but you've got to use common sense otherwise it' could be a different kind of video LOL. Interesting waters though! Clearly u have to get out there to find the bigger fish and more fish life.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As you can see in the video I had my float and flag on the surface. The ferries aren't supposed to come so close to shore and it was outside of the tourist season. I've dived there before without any problems. Why would anyone think Albania is dangerous? It has a horrible reputation from such films as Taken and in the UK they are represented as being overly involved in organised crime and the drug trade through the media.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sorry, how can the ferries come into shore without coming close to it? I guess you mean this was a unscheduled or off route ferry trip?
      I know you said you had been diving there before so i guess you knew or checked the ferry routes beforehand since this is extra important to one on snorkel as apposed to on scuba.
      As to the danger you indicate I doubt you faced any of that stuff being a diver there in this particular area. Forgetting the movie, there are some places i wouldn't take you to in London LOL. Strangely, your UK gov website lists Albania as ok safety wise but of course that can vary like anywhere. If you weren't looking to get involved with drugs and or stolen car crime then you'd be ok and clearly you were.
      Re the flag:
      Don't get me wrong but we all know as divers that even with the flag up it can mean jack to people in boat, bigger boats even worse only because they are looking for other large objects or even staring at their radar of which will definitely not pick out diver's flags on floats-no chance. What kind of boat did you have or did you do a big swim from shore? @@DanielMann

    To be honest, these places in Albania used to be greek and many people who live there are greeks. But unfortunately greek governments through the years are absolutely corrupted and they have given these areas to Albania.

      I didn’t meet any Greeks when I was there. When did this exchange of land happen? I couldn’t find much information on it online. Borders have been changing since the dawn of time and if you go back far enough I guess these places were also Ottoman, Roman, Byzantine etc.

      The greeks are between Saranda and Gjirokastra, a total of 10.000 people. And I really like them because they are all hardworking and good people. That part has nothing to do with the lands though. There are also Arvanites in Greece since the 11th century, but nobody ever claimed the Peloponese is Albanian land :).
