I absolutely loved this story. I found it to be the perfect mix of humor, heart and horror (which, if I remember correctly, was noted as such on the back cover of the book). This is the 4th Hendrix book I’ve read and he has yet to disappoint! So glad you enjoyed this as much as I did!

Grady Hendrix is another of my favourite newer authors. I listened to the audiobook of We Sold Our Souls, and the narrator was perfect. She had this raspy, Chrissy Hynde-Grace Slick quality to her voice. And of course, I TOTALLY related to the main character. Late 40s, best years behind her, working a soul-sucking pink collar night job...That one was a little TOO close to home! Luckily there aren't any deals with the devil in my past to confront! HAHAHAHA! I'll pick up How to Sell A Haunted House soon, too, because my apartment building is a) haunted, and b) up for sale. Let's see how much more of my life Grady Hendrix does better and more creatively!

Long time lurker here. Thanks for this review, Olly. I've just downloaded this book and so far I'm suitably impressed with the writing style. It does use dark humour very effectively and draws you quickly into the characters' lives, so you get another big thumbs up from me with this recommendation. Another author I think you should check out is Adam Howe who also uses dark humour to spin a yarn. I'd recommend starting with his short story: Gator Bait, and then the darkly twisted "Foreign Bodies" available to read in the "Year's Best Hardcore Horror Volume 3" anthology. If "Foreign Bodies" doesn't have you laughing out loud at the gore and its twisted absurdity, nothing will.

Having only read the final girl support group prior, I didn’t expect much out of this (particularly in the scares department) so I was fabulously surprised by the TEETH this thing has! This book was great. I'm kind of scared of puppets anyway, so those scenes horrified me even as I pictured them in my head, realized how absurd, laughed a little, and tipped my hat to Hendrix for pulling it all off seamlessly. There were lots of genuinely uncomfortable moments when I just had to put the book down for a while. Also, I was so sad for the family while being kind of repulsed by them at the same time. Just a great book. I communicated all this to Hendrix and he replied that my discomfort was his reward lol.

There was a toss up at work due to the pandemic. People had adjust, and were looking to live cheaper until things got better. One guy at work found this great aparment. It had two bedrooms, and was an old Art Deco design, but it was going cheap, because it was a basement flat. So, the guy calls his friend to come see the place. He friend says, "I'm taking a mental health day." The best part of the apartment was when an older woman came over and said, "You won't stay. The place is haunted." So, my friend lost the place. He is angry ati his friend, and says, "It was a great place, and haunted too. We lost it because you were having a Mental Health day." They were both upset there was spooky older woman upstairs. It's interesting to hear you say this because this is the first Grady Hendrix book that I didn't enjoy. It felt rushed, and got repetitive and bogged down in the middle. The actual horror parts were great - some of his best - but I was very glad to be done with the main character. Personally The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires eclipsed this in every way - but everyone is different!

My first Hendrix novel, I'm about a third of the way through and I'm getting that Stephen King 'Fairytale' vibe again - starts really well, exploring family relationships, grief, guilt, memory, etc but then it slides off the rails and seems to be following familiar horror tropes - but I'll keep with it and report back.
