Great job Itasca boys! I've worked a haunted house for the last six years, it's always fun. Hard work, but fun. Our challenge is we have to build a 5,000 sq ft haunted house each year and tear it down right after Halloween. Same thing for us, we use the City's park and set it up under a large carnival tent. But we raise a ton of money for the kids every year with all volunteers. Everyone can do this if you are into it!

Unfortunately most cities won't work with to open.

Eventually needing insurance kills these types of businesses. Something happens and SHTF and the lawyers start calling. I hope not I love this kind of stuff.

Exactly. Thanks to more aggressive patrons and litigious people, the costs of making a haunt “safe” enough to operate turn it into an expensive bore sometimes. And $10 per ticket needs a bump up every year.

This was a great informative video. Thank you for sharing as I was always wondering how do these start. I wish him and his business well!

Good video, thanks! I've been doing garage haunts since 2012. Always wanted to branch out and try something bigger, as mine have been just one big room. (Halloween 2012 Dracula's Castle and Halloween 2013 Frankenstein's Laboratory) on TH-cam. These past two years have been Klownhouse of Terror. This year now looking for real estate and actors...we'll see!

Am I missing the sprinkler system or is there not one? I feel like our home haunt runs like a "pro" haunt, but finding a place that passes a fire Marshall inspection is HUGE - plus the insurance to cover the haunt and rental insurance.... There is SO MUCH that goes into running a haunt besides setting up a haunt - at least in Texas. Wishing you all the success in what you're doing though. Keep Haunting!

You are 100% correct. Your labor is the most expensive part and can be unreliable; next expense is liability insurance. I doubt the home haunts notified their residential homeowners insurance about running a commercial operation. Last, no city will allow a commercial haunt without a fire marshall sign off. THATS the guy who every developer of land or buildings fears. Out of $1000 per night, best to figure the owner clears $300-400 depending on what he or she invested to build the haunt. That return should go to paying off the materials used in the startup. Next, figure out how many Halloweens you need to be open with a stable cash flow to really be “in business.”
Lastly, if the haunt only exists based on the start up entrepreneur founder, and something happens to that person, does the show go on? Like any other successful, money making venture, there is more to it than what this video presents. There is no way a property owner will let you build a haunt and open the property to 10,000 strangers without liability insurance for the landlord. Many city attorneys just don’t like haunted houses even if they are for charity because the public is so litigious.

There are consultants but their hard earned experience will run a couple thousand for a beginner haunt.

No such thing as the "haunt industry" unless you are selling stuff to the morons who think haunting is a viable business.

It’s a 500 million dollar industry…. With a trade show in StLouis every year. Do some research 😉

My friend started and runs a major haunt in a commercial building: been doing it 16 years. It takes massive dedication and time and MONEY. Plus contact with past guests and specials and a website…… The tickets are $25 each. A heavy rain on an open night is a real bummer. She has 60 actors per night, sprinkler system and commercial liability. She’s only open 8 weekends. Moves groups through every 5 minutes. You do the math. Right now she’s redesigning one of the rooms and building a new motorized character.
