I really love how Hendrix mixes together horror, comedy and heavy themes. I’ve also seen some recordings of him at discussions and he is wildly entertaining - I think you’d have a blast interviewing him one day. “Nobody believed women” is a heavy theme in Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires too that would make for a fabulous review.
A lot of things that frustrate me in more modern books didn't do so as much here because I felt like they were blatantly more true then than now. I always look at that as a positive in saying "look how far we've come."
I loved this book so much! It took me a couple of chapters to realize what they meant lol - love the way the cover represents what the book is about. - totally agree loved the friendship.
Mike, look forward to your book discussions, and the singing intro made me smile on a very gloomy day! I am in the middle of this book and enjoying it immensely. Not a child of the 80s, but it WAS a great era. I'm excited to see how this book ends. Thanks for this great book recommendation!
I don't really read horror, but your glowing reviews on your weekly updates made me check out this one. First of all, I am a HUGE Phil Collins fan (seen Genesis twice in concert) and when she used his name during a certain scene toward the end, I actually got emotional!!!! Second DO NOT listen to the worm scene right before bed!!!! EEEEKKK i can't even talk about it without dry heaving. Last, I'd say this story made me feel the way Buffy used to make me feel. Deep story with just the right amount of campy fun to mix it up. Thank you for the recommendation. Really loved this book. Never would have ever been on my radar without you.
Just came across this. Read Horror Store!!! I do not like horror. I never read horror. I loved it. Everything from the story, characters, to just the way the book is presented it, so good. I picked it up because 1) I thought it wouldn't be that scary...and depending on your mileage maybe not in some ways but in others...yeah and 2) the presentation just made me have to. I was not disappointed.
I went straight into Horrorstor after I finished this and loved that too, then I picked up We Sold Our Souls which was really good. So much so that I ordered a few more of the man’s books
I’m seeing it a lot, but definitely southern book club is a great Hendrix book. Very similar to Best friends exorcism in terms of over the top characters, but also talks about topics and hidden aspects of the eighties that gets overlooked. Amazing review as always and love using this channel to find new potential books.
The worm part was my favorite. They also have an Amazon prime movie of it was well but it did make it kinda cheesy. Book always way better. I also cried at the end. This one is my favorite by him. I read almost his whole repertoire, been working on it. I do love horror store as it's a haunted IKEA just like the one you read the chapter titles have a part they play in the book. Which I do love the audiobook for it as it changes with the narrator just for the intro of the chapter. Once you'll read you'll understand.
I think "horror-comedy" is a very difficult genre to do right. It's different from "horror-parody", in "horror-comedy" we are very scared in one scene and laughing in the next scene. One Indian movie that did this spectacularly well is 'Stree', which I recommend if you can find it with subtitles. I haven't read this one, but I didn't like the final scenes of the movie. It was all right I suppose. Maybe I should read the book. Great review.
Good review 😊 I like how you mention the good AND the bad, so people may form their own opinions. As I've mentioned in other videos of yours, I really hated this book, but I can see why other people like it. I do realize that I have low tolerance for certain things, and those things were too much for me in this case. I'm planning on continuing to read his books, though, because I really wanna like him.... Happy Halloween!! 🎃
Ironically, I rewatched Heathers a couple of weeks ago, but yes, Winona Ryder and Christian Slater are a very dynamic acting duo in that movie. I also started watching the movie of this book, but didn’t quite finish it, but who knows I might eventually pick up the book at some point
I watched the trailer and it looked like my whole complaint about making the 1980's seem like a cartoon in the way they write the antics/characters. Only Stranger Things writers seem to understand we didn't act that way.
I read all his books this spooky season(they would be good pallet cleansers though) …they’re all a fun little ride …I say sold our souls how to sell a haunted house should be next..he has a non fiction history of horror paperbacks that is great as an audio book
You as a music lover and correct me if I'm wrong-metal fan, should maybe read next "We sold our souls" from Hendrix. " How to sell a haunted house" is his most mature novel although it features killer puppets 😂 I "discovered" Hendrix this year and have read all of his books and have found my favorite author next to SK.
Thanks for the review. That cover is awesome and I love Genesis and Phil Collins, but I have to say I’ve been unsure about starting this book because Grady Hendrix is an on and off author for me. I don’t seem to get his style and I haven’t read anything from him that I liked as much as everyone else. I will give this one a try.
( Hot Flash Horror) That was a great book and I had the same complaints as you. My favorite Hendrix's books are Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires and How to Sell. a Haunted House! His titles are just so damn long lol
I remember it the VHS tapes and I am with you I would not like watching movies this way again because it might be eaten by the machine while you watched it.
I wasn't a poor kid but got bullied anyway. No kids should go through that. Have read two books by Grady Hendrix but not this one. Worried about the hype but might give it a chance anyway.
I'm kind of glad that bullying has mostly shifted online because you CAN unplug. It was difficult to do that when someone jumped you physically as you got off the bus.
@@mikesbookreviews yeah I know what you mean. Cause when you got home then you got to spend the rest of the day in peace. So I am glad there wasn't Internet that time.
The ending is so cheesy but so bloody good at the same time. I love some shameless cheese and heartfelt retro horror themes. Had a lot of fun with this book and there’s some scenes that are genuinely chilling and emotional.
Hi Mike,I was wondering if you ever read Impossible fortress by Jason Rekulak? It's not horror or fantasy,it's basically a John Hughes movie.Anyway,I think you would love it. P.S.Don't ever give up on horror books just because of the numbers🫡
I did not hate this book but it was Overhyped ot maybe ive been reading Stephen King so much and when i read someone else's books and their prose it feels cheap 🤣
We need more singing intros my friend. I’m 45 myself so I think I would enjoy this book
Without a doubt.
These intros though. 😂
Couldn’t have asked for a greater Christmas gift!!!
Happy you liked it ha ha

I’d be curious what you think of the movie that came out last year.. I think it’s on Prime.
A lot of things that frustrate me in more modern books didn't do so as much here because I felt like they were blatantly more true then than now. I always look at that as a positive in saying "look how far we've come."
Another fantastic video! Thank you!!
You got it.
Good video. Thumbed it up. Thank you for entertaining me for exactly 15 minutes.
Thanks bubba!
The 80's and 90's were rough, but compared to today, i. My opinion we had a.lot more genuine culture going on back then.
We may be biased, but this is undeniably true.
I loved this book so much! It took me a couple of chapters to realize what they meant lol - love the way the cover represents what the book is about. - totally agree loved the friendship.
I read the southern book club guide to slaying vampires very funny book. I have that book to read soon.
Seems ot be a popular one!
Best horror novel I read in a while tbh. Great book, great review!
Thank you!

Hope you enjoy it!
Worth watching just for the singing intro. Great review once again Mike.
Ha ha thank you
I'm excited that you will be reading a horror book every month. Really looking forward to that.
Should be fun!
Cant say I'm gonna sit through this whole review (no offense, just not my book interest!) but I'm so happy I clicked just for that intro!! Epic 😂.
Phil Collins rules.
I don't really read horror, but your glowing reviews on your weekly updates made me check out this one.

So glad you liked it!
Great review Mike, more singing in the intros!
Ha! We will see what happens.
Good lord mike i didn't need another reminder of the troop.
That one sticks with me especially during dinner.
i cant have spagetti anymore lol.
Great review as always, Mike - I'm intrigued...gonna have to buy this!

Love the singing!!!
😂 thanks
Automatic addition to my 2024 TBR list!
Can't wait for your review of Blackwater in 2024
Enjoy!
I went straight into Horrorstor after I finished this and loved that too, then I picked up We Sold Our Souls which was really good. So much so that I ordered a few more of the man’s books
Outstanding!

This was actually my only Grady Hendrix read but I liked it just as much as you did! And oh yea, I remember that worm 🪱
Boo worms.
I gave you a thumbs up in the beginning for singing. haha
Gracias!
I got My Best Friend's Exorcism a while ago and your review has made me put it on my tbr.
Excellent!
Horrorstor and Southern Bookclub and exorcism are his best books so either of those 2 would be best to go to
Got it!
The worm part was my favorite. They also have an Amazon prime movie of it was well but it did make it kinda cheesy. Book always way better. I also cried at the end. This one is my favorite by him. The trailer looked totally cornball.
🎃Happy Halloween and Book for Treat day everyone✨
Southern Book Club Guide to Slaying Vampires is my fav from Hendrix. You will like it if you have not got there yet.
I haven't. I'll add it to the list!
I want to read this one, but I just got back from vacation and I haven't checked my library to see if they have the book.

Hey Mike I still enjoy your damn book reviews.
I appreciate that, dammit.
My Best Friend's Exorcism was dope. I would recommend Horrorstor next
Great! Thank you.
That intro I’m dead! 😂😂😂
Was cracking up when they find daddy’s porn collection 😂 “mommas got dinner tonight”
I spit out my coffee laughing
Read Southern Bookclub’s Guide….Vampires next. Then We Sold Our Souls.
Noted!

I'll always try and be fair. Thanks for watching!

80s I was there 2-a bicentennial kid. Don’t remember much.
I read all his books this spooky season(they would be good pallet cleansers though) …they’re all a fun little ride …I say sold our souls how to sell a haunted house should be next..he has a non fiction history of horror paperbacks that is great as an audio book

Sounds like an author I am going to love.

Can't really say since this was my first experience. But I hope you'll give it a go.

They are ridiculous ha ha
Now that you've done "Against All Odds," you and your wife should do "Separate Lives" for Media Reviews. #crossover
This was the best representation of female relationships that I've ever read.
Agree with this completely
I remember it the VHS tapes and I am with you I would not like watching movies this way again because it might be eaten by the machine while you watched it.
Ha ha nostalgia is great but usually it is better in your memory than it actually was
And the Grammy goes to…..
omg mike please make a video about heathers
also i just read horrorstör and it was a cool fun horror read definitely, but not amazing.
Ha ha that could be fun
My dads best friend had a son a few years older than me and would get hand me down clothes from them and got bullied relentlessly
Yeah, it was a real thing. As if being poor didn't suck enough!
I wasn't a poor kid but got bullied anyway. No kids should go through that. Have read two books by Grady Hendrix but not this one. Worried about the hype but might give it a chance anyway.

Not a horror fan but this book sounds interesting
It's and enjoyable read.

Right. I've always got room in my life for a little hokey fun.
Heathers is amazing lol
FACTS
your intros are getting scary day by day
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Totally agree, Heathers is awesome . Doesn’t compare with the new ones 😂
People that don't understand this make me ask WHATS YOUR DAMAGE?
Not ny kind if book, but ill still like thr video anyhow
👨🎤 👍🏿
