My Question to You is, Both Michael and Vito had the chance even though extremely difficult, could have turned things around and got back onto the straight path. Do you think it would have been possible, therefore they are to blame for the consequences they faced? Or do you think both really had no choice? 🤔

Grammatically, it’s difficult to understand the question(s) being asked. But I think you’re asking if we think they are to blame for their own consequences. Did they have a choice? Yes, of course they did. Though, Michael could easily have become the “pezzonovante” (“big shot”) he seemed to later despise. Vito “never wanted this for” Michael. He wanted Michael to be “Senator Corleone” as he told him. And being that he was a war hero, Michael could have been just that. But, in essence, Michael chose his family, his “Family” and La Cosa Nostra over his country and any other such ambitions.

Vito really had no choice. You see how he was working for Genco’s father for a time and then Fanucci basically took that job away from him.Barely literate poor immigrant from Italy in the 1920s,what else was he going to do.Come to think of it Michael had no choice in becoming Don either. With sonny dead and Fredo incompetent,Michael had to take charge.

A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man… that’s the one lesson Michael never seemed to have learned from Vito and eventually that mistake lead to betrayal from his family; Kay and Fredo.I wish you had included them impact Kay’s betrayal had on his person.

Michael escape to sciliy was like pilgrimage. He got to understand his fathers roots and the course of life his father took. Long before in Sicily, the word mafia meant a place of refuge, for those who were mistreated by authority kings, barons, lords. It was where they could get their justice and retribution. As time goes by power corrupts, the mafia started to eat Its own people, every man for himself, it became a tool of authority.
He wanted to do was make the corleon family legitimate. He shared his fathers dreams that the children and grandchildren would one day become doctors, proffessors, senators, presidents like etc. He wanted the Children to live a normal life. True to that, he accomplished his dreams coz none Of them entered the family business

I always liked how the transformation was subtle you see how Michael was in the beginning he didn't want anything to do with the family business but it's established that he loves his father and his family so you knew when Vito was shot as Sonny was murdered you knew he was gonna step into the role as the don

  • @flibber123
    @flibber123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

I think his transformation happened when he realized he needed to kill Sollozzo. There's no turning back if he does that and he knew that. He married in Sicily because he knew the old Michael was dead, that's why Kay no longer factored into his plans. He always planned on coming back, he specifically asked Sonny how long it would take. Sonny also told him that Sonny would explain to their mom that Michael couldn't say goodbye before he left. Not that he couldn't say goodbye for good, just goodbye until he can come back. Certainly Sonny and Apollonia being killed made him want revenge but he revenge isn't why he came back.

I think when the cop punched him and broke his face he is when he turned! When those guys were showing up to kill his father. He see s that a cop is in on killing his dad. So he sees govt isnt what he thought. Here s a cop thats taking money to kill his dad. Why is cop any better than his dad. When he sees his dad in hospital he tells him “im with you now”! I thought that was where he turned

    • @flibber123
      @flibber123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@richardaguirre3914To narrow it down to a specific moment, I think his turning point was when he saw at the hospital that his father was unguarded. He knew right then his dad was being setup to be killed, that Sollozzo was behind it, and that this means his dad won't be safe until Sollozzo is dead. That's why outside when he first spoke to McCluskey he deliberately provoked him by asking him how much the Turk was paying him to set up his father. He had worked out the whole situation before the car with the killers even arrived. That's also why when the baker's assistant showed up Michael knew exactly how to use his presence there to maximum effect. When he was explaining his plan to kill them, that's him making his move, a move he had already decided on at the hospital before anyone else had showed up.

@@rhaenyralikesyoutube6289 I agree she was his true love. But Michael became the villain the moment he thought of the plan to kill The Turk and the police captain. Which was somewhere between him getting his jaw broken and telling his brothers of his plan. I'm not saying he turned evil for thinking of the plan. He is evil because it came to fruition, and HE wanted to kill them. Michael wasn't the only civilian that could've went . Hagen could've done it. He would have . Apolloniag's assassination only cemented thoughts and feelings he'd already been having. He is his fathers son. And his father became a killer the day the woman he loved the most in the world at that time, his mother was killed saving his life. Much like Michael's was. His was more luck than his father's, but both lived because of a woman's decision. Those 2 womens death can be seen as the main reason for Vito and Michael's fall to the dark side.

The situation with Fredo's treason towards Michael reminds me of the dilemma Queen Elizabeth I faced with her cousin, Mary Queen of Scotts' alliance with Spain to have Elizabeth assassinated in order to assume the throne and restore England to Catholisism. Elizabeth struggled with the decision to execute Mary, and put it off for many years in spite of the overwhelming evidence of her betrayal, but finally realized the her throne would never be safe as long as Mary lived. Cousins aren't quite the same as brothers, but the crisis of conscience is similar. Both Michael's character and the real-life Queen struggled with the moral questions, and their choices haunted them for the rest of their lives.

I always felt that what inspired the Mafia was the government and politics. In Godfather 3 Micheal says that line in Italy. "Politics and the Mafia is the samething." They copied 1 president which is the Dons, the Vice-President which was the Under Boss, they had the Military which was the Shooters, the Generals of the Military which were the Capos, the Soldiers which are the Soldiers that push the buttons, the Secretary Of Treasury which were their earners of money $$$, their Lawyers which could be their Lawyers or Consigliere. Tom Hagen when he talked to Frank Pantengeli in jail in Godfather 2 said that they got the ideas of how to form the Mafia after him. He had a love for politics and incorporated it in the families.
They also got ideas from the bible. When they do meetings and such. Also when they make people they do like a Catholic ceremony to make a man.

he didn’t have to kill Tessio and Fredo, he chose to do that because he was incapable of forgiveness. Which is hypocritical because he always wanted redemption and for everyone else to forgive him.
Fredos betrayal was one of stupidity and not likely to be repeated.
Tessio’s betrayal made zero sense. He was an old man that helped build the Corleone organization and he threw away all those years of loyalty and history away to go with someone he “barely” knew? Just to sell drugs? Granted we can assume he knew Barzini for decades but the movie didn’t show he had much interaction with Barzini and he knew Barzini wasn’t loyal at all.
Of course you can argue the what if scenario all day and night. But neither plot worked and most likely both parties wouldn't betray again.

All he had to do was make a decision to join his father and that would give him the power he needed to protect his family. He became obsessed with protecting his family by any means necessary and began to understand going into the Underworld was a necessary evil unknowingly losing his family in the process.

If Apollonia had not been killed, and had came back to America with Michael, i think his marriage would've been so much better.

Apollonia was used to the men having to deal with vendettas and bad blood, amongst other things in that life.
She would've probably been a lot more supportive to her husband than Kay because she had been raised in that environment. Whereas Kay was born and raised in America and naively assumed that only outlaws do things that are illegal.

But attack on Father vito corleone changed how he looked at the world, After killing sollozzo,he was no simp, his desire to spend romantic life with Kay became unfulfilled,So he wanted a Submissive, feminine, not nagging, girl to sharpen his masculinity. But death of Apolonia made him that desire unfulfilled. After Sonny death,he thought he will be alone and he has to deal the world alone. His desire to dinner with sonny every night became unfulfilled. His sister was also idiot type,so he believed on Fredo and Kay.But giving many chance,Fredo cheated and fredo had so much envy thoughts against him,his heart broked. He thought he was doing only the family, and family members are having hatred after Sister brother, he went to Kay to Heal his soul but she was nagging type, she wanted to act like Meghan Merkle.
    He was never happy
    He never enjoyed his life
He should have not killed Fredo, should placed him in kidnap mode where only he can meet
He should have found another girl in Sicily or other village
Sonny should have taken his advice
Kay would have understand the needs of him, Bcz she was his last hope
Sonny should not have interrupted while Vito corleone was talking with Sollozzo which led to attack on vito, then Michael have no options but to kill sollozzo.
He should have left Sicily early or would have kept Appoolinia in secret place
Michael sister would have made his family strong
Sonny and fredo had known his weakness and improved them, then Michael would have been happy

What eventually changed our perspective by and large were the following: endless war of the Vietnam war; the assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcolm X, and the corruption of Nixon.

Michael Corleone was not remotely evil.
    - He never wanted in the business. His father's life was in danger and he stepped up.
    - He would have been fine staying in Sicily. He found Apollonia and attained real happiness; far greater than what Kay could have provided. He was hit by the thunderbolt. His brother was murdered, then the love of his life.
He then did what he had to try and protect as many people as possible. The heads of the Five Families (movie wise) had to be neutralized. Moe Greene had to be taken out so that he could complete the move to Vegas. We don't know what else he did during the years that passed but we can assume that he kept working towards his goal of legitimacy.
    - His own brother betrays him. His own brother who couldn't see what Michael did for him but only saw what he wasn't allowed (capable of) to do.
Michael made the hard decisions that tore his soul apart but, by and large, kept his family whole. And he lost nearly everything for himself along the way. That's not evil.

jeez....so much displacement for Michael's behaviors...
●Michael never needed to go to Sicily...it was a place of refuge, but not one to shape a person. Vito grew mostly in America, with a traditional culture but not fully bound to it...its what made Vito a well respected don, but a good person. Something Michael obviously couldnt bring back after his stay in sicily, because it's not a trait taught over there.
●several of Michael's sinister actions are against other families in self defense...
●but as the case with Fredo, betrayal or not...he was family. Michael and his negligence to spend time with Fredo, Kay, and his children is what causes their feelings of isolation and animosity. I get he is distraught over losing apollonia, but he has no excuse to ignore the family he DOES have. Killing Fredo destroyed the distinction between family and business...something evil onit's own, and something Vito worked to maintain to keep his innocent loved ones safe.
      ● your final point could not be further firm the truth...the tragedy after the first two films is how, by and large... *split* his family had become, with everyone in the flashback dead or isolated...and the final shots of Michael being alone.

The sick thing is that mafiosi, like all gangsters, do not consider themselves villains. They consider themselves involved in a literally cutthroat requiring occasional extreme actions. They think the legitimate world is hypocritical and no less vicious as theirs. Just not as open and honest about it. They are not stupid. They are evil, lack self- control, and put no brakes on their appetites.

Apollonia didn't deserve what happened to her. And Michael knew it. That's why it had such a profound affect on him. I think he death is what pushed him to do the things he did.
Personally, i don't blame him. I'd go to the ends of the earth to avenge the death of an innocent loved one, especially my new bride that had nothing to do with any crimes i had committed in my life.

I am a person who can never sympathise with mafia. But what Michael did back then was justified. No level of peace talks would make Sollozo not kill Vito. Also, there are no law to punish them. So Michael had to do it. His first kill was even more justified than that of Vito's first murder( of Fanucci)

He had an inside view of the corruption in NY, for example buying cops, judges, politicians so had ne reason to believe in the world. Based on his educations in the Marines, college and when his father was shot.
As he went along as the Don, he made the family legit. By the time GF III takes place he turned the family into multi-millionaires with good investments, real estate and legal gambling.

This is where coppolla made mistake! I think the godfather fans enjoyed seeing michael be bad guy! Its fun to root for a bad guy! Fans didnt want to see him turn good and repent in godfather 3. They wanted to see him get in a conflict with another family and be a bad ass trying to get out of it! The sopranos showed theres so many different stories can come up with. They made godfather under the old hollywood rules.

Coppolla didn't make a mistake. The reason Michael turned to the dark side was very blurred and genuine from his standpoint. His redemption was much more realistic than that of the likes of Loki and Shawn, in my opinion

If that kind of move was accepted in that life, they didnt need to wait for their mother's death.
