Michael learned to be a cold blooded killer during his time in the military. He does not have the compassion or the sense to forgive like his father. He is a brilliant strategist and plans his life accordingly like a military general and will not hesitate to rub out anyone that wronged him, even his own family members.
Yep. At the end, remember he died a sad, lonely death and he deeply regretted the fact he killed his brother. It haunted him for life. You wouldn’t want that.

"Why were you so loved while I was so feared" the fact that he doesnt see the difference shows his weakness.

He was playing chess and two steps ahead of his enemies and I love how they all underestimated him from the very beginning. sonny meant well very loyal but like Fredo he oftentimes didn't use his brain and like michael said this is a matter of life and death those guys were stupid. Michael is a Marine who was wounded on Saipan. He had a good sense of the real world/life & death at this point.
Great video. Michael's way of thinking makes sense and is the best way to survive in any situation when dealing with people in your life. If this video was available in 2017 I might still be working at the place I got fired from. A friend betrayed me. I made too many mistakes. Said too much around the wrong people. Did not keep my enemies closer than my friends. If my 2017 situation was in the mafia I would be dead because I failed to think like Michael Corleone. That is the way I look at it.

I was friends with someone since 2nd grade..as we moved towards high school...I began to see little bites taken out of me by him..he would always explain it away. When I finally heard him clear as day ripping me apart to someone else, I confronted him. When he tried to explain, I shut him down. I told him we done as friends and to stay away from me. That was the last time I ever spoke to him..I even looked right through him in our one class and the hallways, and lunch. He was at least smart enough to keep his distance.

great vid. Ever since I saw part 2 for the first time I wondered about the effect that having Fredo killed would have on Michael, then in part 3 I saw his confession scene and realised how heavy that burden was. Michael's confession was an incredibly powerful moment, the best part of 3 by far.

You have given me a whole new perspective about having enemies, it's a brilliant analogy. When Michael got back from Cuba it was one blow after another: Fredos betrayal, Senate hearing, his failing marriage, losing his mother just too much to deal with. I think what really turned Michael ice cold was when Kay told him she got an abortion you could see it in his eyes before he closed the door in her face. Great video 👍👍

This movie was the most beautiful tragedy. He compartmentalizes his feelings and sets aside his humanity in certain affairs. He tries willingly to hold on dearly to the things he eventually loses. He's like an everyday man except with more power. It's so tragic in the most literate sense

The laws of power applied to the godfather what a brilliant idea for a video! I read some comments saying Michael is too cold. I don't think so. Yes he is intelligent, analytical and calculated in his actions. But he still feels things deeply, that is why the constant betrayals are hard or him. But he isn't ruled by his emotions when it comes to deciding what to do about it. That's what sets him apart. He is shrouded in mystery. People don't know his plans or thoughts. If they do know, it is by his design and to his advantage.

Michael was dragged in when he goes to the hospital and finds his father alone and knows that people are coming to kill his father. Michael's training as a Marine gave him an advantage. He also received a Medal of Honor for bravery. He was not afraid. From his father he learned that you must think ahead think of what your enemies maybe thinking. Critical thinking strategizing. He was super smart much like his father. For many years Vito Corleone planned his vengeance on the old man who wiped out his family. This is why family was so important to him and what it meant.

Not gonna lie. Everytime I watch Fredo's lament to Michael I get teary eyed by how stinkingly relatable and close his feelings are to the average man including myself. The feeling of inadequacy is a dark smear inside us all that festers resentment and toxic ambitions that result in the collateral damage brought by a loss of one's soul
Michael was an improvement on Vito.
Vito demonstrated clearly attachment and emotion. Eg: Vito kills back home to avenge his mother.
Michael demonstrates regret but willingness to dispassionately act in order to remove an obstacle (Solozzo/McCluskey/Fredo).
Note how Michael is present in person for at least one assassination he greenlit.
I may be wrong but I don't believe Vito got that "up close and personal" as a Don.
The two do intersect,however, for example when in the early 1900s Vito clinically eliminates the neighbourhood vulture Fanucci.
Overall I find the trajectory of the more "unlikely" leader most fascinating.
The legacy of the character was somewhat marred by Godfather pt. 3, but with time I don't think that movie was _as_ bad as the stick critics gave it.
Then again, Vito like You said not only killed Fanucci. But also killed Don Ciccio's Goons And Don Ciccio Himself Up close and personal. Values are different because in a way Vito lost his family so the one he formed would never be intentionally hurt by him. Whereas though Michael loved his family, he was always the outsider of the family and thought differently from many of them. Clearly as we can come to agree, him being marine captain helped him get on the road to be comfortable in dangerous situations. That coldness and calculation was brought forth into his life back at home once his father was shot and family members dying all around him.

Yes and no. Delivery plays a huge role. There actually was a study done by two scientists that tried to understand social power and how it worked. Once you've read this study you start understanding how power really works in any context in the movies or real life. Power always works by the same principles but some people will apply those principles with more grace and tact (depending on the situation). in case you didnt know, the most event that influenced michael is turi guiliano in sicillian novel. turi guiliano was the hero that michael aspired to be, and he was ended up betrayed by his best friend and his life mission to free sicillian people from rome was finally stopped by vito corleone in exchange of michael's life, also by other dons and rome government that wished him dead. so vito's lessons to michael made him moved from heroic's mindset into business' mindset
