Yip a débuté l'apprentissage du wing chun à 9 ans ou 13 ans, auprès de Chan Wah-shun, qui résidait dans le temple du clan, au centre de la propriété familiale. Yip fut le dernier élève du maitre, celui-ci l'ayant accepté à l'âge de 70 ans.En raison de la vieillesse de son maître, Yip a essentiellement pratiqué auprès Ng Chung-sok (second plus ancien disciple) et Lui Yu-chai. Chan mourut trois ans après le début de la formation de Yip. Dans ses dernières volontés, il aurait invité Ng à continuer son enseignement auprès de Yip.
À 15 ans, Yip déménage à Hong Kong, avec l'aide d'un parent, Leung Fut-ting. Un an plus tard, il fréquente le St.Stephen's College, une école secondaire pour les familles aisées et les étrangers vivant à Hong Kong. Lors d'un incident durant sa période d'études, Yip intervient après avoir vu un agent de police étranger battre une femme. L'agent tente d'attaquer Yip, mais Yip le terrasse, puis s'enfuit à l'école avec son camarade de classe. Plus tard, son camarade confiera cet évènement à un vieil homme vivant dans son immeuble. Yip est ainsi invité à rencontrer cet homme, Leung Bik, fils de Leung Jan (maitre de Chan Wah-shun). Dans un échange d'assauts amicaux, Yip se fait terrasser. Il continuera par la suite à apprendre le wing chun, auprès de Leung Bik, découvrant notamment les techniques sophistiqués et les applications théoriques.
A 24 ans, Yip retourne à Foshan. Il rejoindra l'armée durant la guerre, puis occupera pendant quelques années les fonctions de capitaine des patrouilles de police de Foshan. Il enseigne le wing chun à plusieurs de ses subordonnés, parents et amis, sans ouvrir d'école d'arts martiaux. Certains de ces élèves les plus connus sont Lok Yiu, Chow Kwong-yue, Kwok Fu, Lun Kah, Chan Chi-sun et Lui Ying. Parmi eux, Chow Kwong-yue était considéré comme le meilleur, mais il s'est finalement consacré au commerce et a cessé de pratiquer les arts martiaux. Kwok Fu et Lun Kah continuèrent à enseigner par la suite. L'art du wing chun actuel dans la région de Foshan et de Guangdong a été principalement transmis par ces deux personnes. Chan Chi-sun et Lui Ying déménagèrent plus tard à Hong Kong, mais aucun d'entre eux n'accepta d'étudiant. Yip vécu avec Kwok Fu au cours de la Seconde guerre sino-japonaise, et ne revint à Foshan qu'après la guerre, où il a poursuivi sa carrière comme agent de police. En 1949, à l'établissement de la République populaire de Chine par les communiste, Yip âgé de 56 ans, craignant des représailles en raison de ses anciennes fonctions officielles dans l'armée nationale et la police, quitte définitivement Foshan. Il s'installe à Macao, puis Hong Kong.
Vie à Hong Kong
Yip est connu pour être un consommateur régulier d' opium, se fournissant au marché noir. Le coût de l'opium a été considéré comme élevé à cette époque, et Yip avait besoin d'une source fiable de revenu à Hong Kong, pour se payer de l'opium, et pour aider les membres de sa famille vivant encore à Foshan. Ce serait pour ces motifs qu'il aurait ouvert une école d'arts martiaux à Hong Kong. Initialement, la rentabilité était médiocre, les étudiants de Yip ne restant généralement que quelques mois. Il a déménagé son école deux fois, à Hoi An Tan Street dans le quartier Sham Shui Po, puis à Lee Tat Street à Yau Ma Tei. A partir de cette période, certains de ses élèves avait atteint la maîtrise du wing chun et ont commencé à ouvrir leur propre école. Les victoires de certains de ses élèves dans des combats de rue ou des confrontations martiales renforcèrent la réputation de l'enseignement de Yip. Le 24 août 1967, Yip et certains de ses élèves ont établi la Hong Kong Wing Chun Athletic Association.

Yip est décédé le 2 décembre 1972, d'un cancer de la gorge, peut-être lié à son habitude de fumer des cigarettes.
Yip a laissé un énorme héritage pour le wing chun, qui s'étend maintenant à travers le monde et est devenu l'un des arts martiaux chinois le plus pratiqué.Yip a également laissé derrière lui une histoire écrite de wing chun, dont l'exactitude historique est débattue. Il a filmé trois des cinq forme (art martial) formes martiale du wing chun avant sa mort.
De nombreux objets ayant appartenu à Yip sont exposés au musée Yip Man Tong'de Foshan.
Anecdotes
Yip établissait une relation amicale avec ses élèves, et n'a jamais permis qu'on l'appelle sifu (maitre), comme le veut la tradition ; il se faisait appeler (man sok), « Oncle Man »

After A quick street fight with A couple bullies you never get to see Bruce Lee go in and talk to him or the IP MAN go outside and tell him about his school.
So it's quite weird in some way how Bruce Lee was one of his top students when in the movies of IP MAN sees Bruce Lee in A fight between some bullies and they never even speak to each other?

Not until the IP MAN THE FINAL the reason is that THE IP MAN first met him in the dinner Bruce Lee and his friends were waiting for him.
During that fight with the criminal Bruce Lee got hit A few times that's when Bruce Lee comes into the act he's at the beginning of his training time period as time went on during their training THE IP MAN wouldn't fight no more his students would fight instead to represent their mentor/master on what they learned from him.

Based on his biography (in the description) the man must have been really good before he reached old age but most importantly he seemed to have had a character in the grand ancient mold of China, he grew up in the pre-communism era of China. I have studied that era through the biography of Chang Gai Shek, i can imagine the type of Chinese people Yip Man family was to serve under Chang Gai Shek as a police captain and in the national army (against the communists). Chinese society at that time was very different from now, not yet reset by communism. There were bright scholars and there was a Chinese aristocracy that had a far more refined culture. Farmers lived like slaves tied to the land. Respect for scholars and teachers was paramount and knowledge was important. Also it was a time of Chinese warlords influences after the fall of the Ching Dynasty. So people had to be smart to survive and often take initiative on their own. All this was destroyed by communism and what came after was a single repressive state that saw scholars as enemies and teachers as dangerous dissidents. Most of Yip Man's life was before all this and he escaped it by going to HK. From that study i can guess that Yip man taught a lot about character to his students more than actual Kung Fu in his later years. It's probably these grand ancient values that encouraged many of his students to think independently and develop strong leadership. B. Lee is an example of that. Yip Man was clearly an enemy of communism. His decision to move to HK was smart and important.
Ip Man will only be a normal kungfu man if Bruce is not study in his kungfu sectorl.
Even though, Bruce skill have not much to do with study in his sector.
It can be anybody.
Infect, Ip Man traditional training is not what Bruce agree with. It is Bruce own self mindset, looking for effective, logical training.
Bruce improvement have nothing to do with ip man.
Ip Man have nothing to teach Bruce in this area.
This kind of traditional master did not guide Bruce or open Bruce mind. It can be anyone to teach Bruce Wing Chun and make no different.
Bruce asborb boxing, Tae Kwan Do, Judo, why don't we say those training partners create Bruce Lee and they are all legend, they are all master to Bruce Lee.

The IP MAN movies was A tribute and story of who the IP MAN really was he was the man who 4 deciples that was trained by himself and one of those deciples was one of the greatest martial arts masters Bruce Lee,
Bruce Lee was so fast he that he was able to keep up with teacher the IP MAN in A sparing match soon as his teacher was aging Bruce Lee and the other's that he trained would protect him,
The IP MAN would watch them the four men he trained himself he watch how they would compete against other competitors Bruce Lee was one of them.
Soon as their mentor/teacher passed away Bruce Lee and the others trained again for A few months later that's when he was offered to become an actor and at his time line there was no stunt double so that's why you see how fast he was.

Yes Yip man trained Bruce Lee, Bruce was excellent in Wing Chun and then he decided to make his own martial art Jeet Kune Do (JKD) and 60% of JKD is based on wing chun techniques.
Sorry to say but Bruce Lee did not in fact finish his Wing Chun training although be many masters in it and no one to this day knows how good he was beyond his first few strikes because Bruce didn't let it past the first few by winning the fight very quickly

+Elijah Everett He was born in 1893. It was too long ago for him to have such pictures. Because the first photograph taken was 189 years old, and Yip was born 67 after the first photograph, even nearly 7 decades wasn't enough to perfect it.
