- Age of Wonders 4 reviewed by Leana Hafer on PC.
The fact that your legacy follows you in Age of Wonders 4 is rewarding, and the faster pace of its very strong campaign mechanics and pretty good tactical battles make it feel like you can write a new chapter of this saga in a reasonable amount of time. Cranking all the dials up to maximum weirdness can lead to some edge cases that ruin the fun a bit, but it's not that big of a price to pay for the vast map and empire customization we get to play with.

"Master of Magic" is one of my favorite games of all time!
Loved AoW3 and Planetfall.
Looks like a great game with a lot of content for the price.
Does 4 still do the cool thing when you zoom all the way out of the map and get a very stylized rendition of the explored map? Loved that.
It does.
Well, the race cultures are (compared to CIV) more like "cultural areas".
You can be a feudal group of spider riding frogs, mainly using poison magic to fight. While you can also be decent unicorn riding humans, mainly using healing magic - but also feudal. Two very differenct "civilizations", but part of the same cultural area.
You can play unicorns riding humans? That is a bit weird
These guys should make the next Heroes of Might and Magic game. And make it more like HMM3.
HoMM 3 and 5 and still the best games in the series.

Isnt the blizzard debuff just active in all arctic provinces? That's what the description said, so it seems like one would need to retreat to a green province (or one without snow at least) to be able to heal. Though it could still be better displayed, both by effects and tooltips.
No, it's only sometimes active in some arctic provinces.

A fantasy Total War with the ability to create a completely unique faction would be so cool!
It's called Age of Sigmar. Except it's not a videogame.
Warhammer has races and factions quite set, so such customisation wouldn't fit.
But something like this? That might be something...

Got baited by all the praise and thought it would be at least a 9 or even a 10 but this score for 4x game is still awesome

You mean the narrative driven story realms? There are five of those.

A short review, or preview more like. What are the technical details, what are the game modes, is the previous story in any way present, is there a map editor, how has it been changed to previous installments... you know, a review.

Is it me, or do the battle maps and textures look way worse than on the world map, which looks beautiful?
The battle maps I’ve seen in gameplay look stunning so far.
You're not the only person to say this. Other reviewers have already said the same thing. Battle maps feel somewhat polygonized when compared to the world map.
The score feels a little bit low compared to how much he praises the game throughout the review.
Is this coming to Gamepass?
Planetfall was a garbage fire, so I'm wary of this one despite loving 3. In a world where TW Warhammer Immortal Empires exists it makes me not see the point in getting a lesser game like this.

Looks pretty cool except for combat. It seems too small scale with only a handful of army units
plus the combat graphisms are really not impressive for 2023
You can have larger battles attacking with multiple armies they just need to be adjacent to the enemy before you attack then they join the battle with the attacker

She. And Leana Hafer is the go-to reviewer when it comes to anything strategy. She has a great background in it.

Played my first hours yesterday, kind of bummed that there's no campaign. Ho hum.
Story mode is the campaign. As you beat a story mode scenario, more will pop up.

The AI is not bad in its current state.
Sure you can win a battle where you are outmanned, but you will get a challenge.
And you will most likely lose some games where they wreck your ruler city.

No real campaign is a huge negative that's about 3 points off for me
My understanding was that the campaign is baked into the themed maps like the one featuring the ice queen, since she's a character from the series. Iirc you .unlock more scenarios as you complete them, and they're tied to the pantheon system. Seems like an iteration on the empire system from AOW Planetfall
