    One of the common mistakes people make about climate change is saying that it’s about “saving the planet.” But that’s not really the right way to think about it.
    Earth has gone through immense climate changes many times before, in some cases leading to mass species extinction. Now, we’re living through the onset of human-caused climate change, and slowing it down isn’t about saving the Earth. It’s about saving ourselves.
    Humans have been around for just .004% of Earth’s history. And in all of human history - the 200,000 years since our species began - we’ve had agriculture for just 5% of that time and electricity for .07% of that time.
    The simple truth about climate change is that it isn’t new to the planet, but civilization is. And with climate change we’re inviting a level of climate disruption that human civilization has simply never seen before.

    Looks like some of you guys misinterpreted the video. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't worry about climate change, nor we didn't cause the rise of global temperature. The video just stating that the *focus* is wrong, we often said that "we need to save the earth", or "we're destroying the earth". No, we're not destroying the earth itself, it wont be destroyed.... that's why the campaign is (maybe) ineffective. But life on the earth IS in danger, not 100% of them obviously, but most of them, including human. So, this video is telling us that focus of climate change campaign should've been life, nature, and human.
    EDIT: for people who (still) say it doesn't matter, it does, at least psychologically. When the campaign say "save the earth" most people feel skeptical because they know we can't destroy this enormous rock in the first place. But if the campaigns are saying to save human and other life on the earth, it'll make them care more about it.

      +Patternicity It is more of a biological thing. Humans are wired with biases in our genetics. One of the major problems is a lot of individuals cannot disconnect themselves from these biases. Hank green on scishow does explain these (I do not really want to write pages about this haha) biases but in terms of anti-vaccination. While I understand vaccines has nothing to do with this subject, he explain the concept of these biases and how they influence humans decisions, which also includes the whole anti-climate change mentality.

    Thank you Vox. This is a discussion I’ve been having for years regarding human impact on our ecosystem. It’s like we are all collectively pooping in our own drinking water and then arguing over whether we are cause of it becoming undrinkable. What we are doing is self limiting. The earth will survive and life will continue to thrive, albeit in another form that has adapted to a warmer climate, what we do to it after we have been eliminated by our own design, or by Mother Nature.

    the problem of the video is that it's very anthropocentric, I don't blame her, that is the way we were raised. In the video it says that the problem we should be conserned withl is that climate change is affecting us as humans. I believe we should be concerned because it is affecting all life on earth!
    we are experiencing the biggest mass extinction of species since the ice age!

  • @ricksanford336
    @ricksanford336 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    This video is extremely anthropocentric. Yes climate change is about us, yes the vulnerability of human civilization, but it's ALSO about every other species on earth!! Yes, most humans only care about themselves, their community, etc. But climate change is disrupting the populations of MANY MANY species. For example, the changes in ocean temperature is killing coral and various other animals up the food chain. The changes in climate zones is forcing the migration of species (such as birds) into areas that don't contain adequate natural habitat for their survival. And the various other environmental issues that play into climate change (deforestation, mining, etc.) impacts species...

  • @johnabbott1886
    @johnabbott1886 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As long as we're talking about timelines, and how short of an amount of time we've been on the planet, and how its even shorter that we've been using fossil fuel...
    ...it should ALSO be noted that its been a VERY short amount of time that we've been able to actually physically monitor temperatures.
    All other data, the data that goes back "tens of thousands" of years, is based off of ice core samples. Its literally "proxy" data, or a suggestion that we MIGHT know what the temperature was in a certain area of the planet only on certain days where the ice packed. And from that.... we're trying to chart the temperature changes by fractions of a degree over millennia.
    So as someone who loves science, I find it completely insulting when its suggested that we "know" what is happening on temperature trends over the ENTIRE planet by taking proxy measurements over millennia on one area of the planet, and extrapolating that as us knowing what happened all over the world. Its further insulting that we literally change data from older weather instruments because we know that the data was flawed, but we presume to be able to "guess" how to correct that data.
    And then there is the observation thing; that if you start observing anything from a fixed point in time, you'll be convinced that any trend you see is something important. No matter if it happened before.

  • @GoldenTacoCat
    @GoldenTacoCat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When one say "save the planet" they are not being literal, the phrase is a figure of speech meant to cause emotion that someone will act on. Additionally, it is about saving the planet, or at least the life on Earth which will suffer along side humanity and civilization. Life will be reduced to. Nit picking a phrase because it is not literal enough is a strange and obtuse thing to do, it also makes it seem as if climate change is not an immediate threat. It is not just about us, it is about life.

    • @chobitkillx1
      @chobitkillx1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GoldenTacoCat While this statement makes sense, I think they were trying to illustrate the fallacies of certain individuals who disagree with climate change. That is kind of the reasons why scientists have changed the phrase "global warming" to "climate change" now. Both of these, in a scientific standpoint, are the same thing. But in the general public, especially the people who disagree, these are two different concepts. Sadly though, the word of the phrase was met with the same agenda. This is why I think vox took an unconventional way of explaining global warming by utilizing the "save the planet" concept. They are trying to further emphasis the impact of climate change on humans by removing the aspect of other species on this planet (I am not saying that it lessen or changes the overall goal to save other species).

    • @Killykat
      @Killykat 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, but big extensions took place during thousands of years, it was gradual, it leaves time for species to adapt and survive . But it’s been only 200 years. This change is way too fast for our planet to handle without our help. I saw no one point this out and I think it is really important because it ruins the entire message of the video.

    Not my favorite video about climate change... definitely a different approach, but it is vague and pretty selfish. It isnt just about us and about a continuation of climate instability. It is about the rapid change in short periods of time. It is about the impact of the human species on other habitats and organisms. It is not just about our comfort in a stable environment.

    The first graph doesn't even cover our entire 200,000 year history, yet it clearly shows we've survived through more dramatic changes and higher temperatures. In fact, we seem to do better when it's warmer.
    However, we really need to stop destroying our planet, forest, and oceans, regardless of whether or not we can take the heat.

    • @DBZHGWgamer
      @DBZHGWgamer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have survived dramatic changes, but civilization has not. The point of the video is society, not necessarily human life. Though suffering will also be way larger than ever because the population has never been so large.

  • @speakdino10
    @speakdino10 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, the problem isn't climate change itself. It's the acceleration of it which we humans have a direct impact on. For the planet to warm by 3 whole degree globally would normally take hundreds or thousands of years. This is plenty of time for animals to adapt. For us as a species to increase the temp 3 degrees within 100 years is mind boggling. Species have no time to change, and therefore go extinct, throwing the delicate balance of life into disarray.

  • @TrovadorManrique
    @TrovadorManrique 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    If civilization depends so much on climate stability, we only have two choices: either we figure out some way to stabilize the climate while maintaining civilization as we know it, or we keep reducing our dependency from climate stability more and more. We just have to agree on which one of the two strategies is more cost-effective.

    Life has recovered from mass extinction events before, and massive climate change.
    The problem is, civilization hasn't. We haven't had this scale of mass excitation since the beginning of civilization. We haven't had this scale of climate change since the beginning of civilization. Life can recover, the climate can recover. We're just not sure if we can recover.

    No. A. They used data for 150 thousand years when we have over 450 thousand years of data showing a specific pattern, NOTHING unusual about where we are right now. And B. There is no conclusive study showing that carbon emissions are drastically affecting the temperature in the way that many claim. And C. These projections are based off of cherry picking data, and making claims that aren't backed by concrete studies.

    The Planet will survive.
    Humans will also survive,
    just not most of them.
    The planet will not kill most of us,
    We will kill each other to survive.

    And that, is the beginning of the end.

    Side note: It's not accurate to say mammals evolved from reptiles...reptiles still exist, as did a predecessor to mammalian life in the form of a shrew-like animal that lived side by side with ancient reptiles. The demise of the dinosaurs opened up a huge ecological niche for the said shrew to evolve into complex mammalian life w/o as much reptilian competition around. Furthermore the resource needs of large animals could not be met anymore, and smaller animals took a foothold on the planet.
